Cornerbacks Galore....

We all have seen the 49ers bring in cornerbacks for interviews, probably looking to find a player to replace the solid Walt harris. There have been 3 released players recently that intrigue me and I was just curious as to everyone elses opinion.

B.More Ravens just released Samarie Rolle who I find to be a above average corner better than Payman and Green(IMO). And a few weeks ago Chris Mccallister. Here are Rolles  stat from 08 with none from Mccallister due to injury but why not sign him to low contract and see if he can help.

Carolina Panthers just released Ken Lucas who was rather productive as well. A young veteran can help bring along Reggie Smith, Spencer or Brown. Here are Lucas's stats..

Now in comparison to Eric Green who just signed with the dolphins and who the 49ers brass brought in for an interview; the before mentioned players had better years. Green's stats are this....

And in comparison to Karl Paymah who I haven't even heard of who was also a part of that horrible pass defense all the corners recently released are considerably better are they not? Here are Paymah's stats...

So my question is this? Should the 49ers be looking at any of these corners to bring in to help make us  better on defense? Or do they continue to hope that the corners we have on the team blossom this year into solid corners. Or better yet do the 49ers use more draft picks on young players and try to train them into their style of player? I personally think it would be best to sign a Lucas or Rolle for about 4 years and draft corners 2 years from now that we can build around. What is everyone thoughts?

I mean the stats speak for themselves don't they? And the ages of the players are all around the same pretty much. 26 and 32? heh its the same(all you old heads like that) 30 the new 20! But seriously I can not be the only one who wanted to close their eyes on every play that there was a deep ball thrown on us.  Now yes I know we didnt have a pass rush to help out but there is a such thing called a "coverage sack" they need to come up with a stat category for that and if they did I can promise you we were probably dead last in the league. So just thoughts...no smart comments

stats are not everything bra. Not saying any of these guys are nnadi, but good CBs are not throw to that often. Rolles and McCalister are over 30 and are in a major downfall. Both are injury prone and are easily beaten on most plays. Theres a reason they were realeased.

According to the comminsioner of the nfl, 104 people retired last year. 7 due to age, and the rest because of Patrick Willis

McAlister

He had a huge contract, and was hurt during the team’s first season under Harbaugh. He’s a victim of circumstance, or so I thought. He hasn’t received a lot of sniffs this deep into free agency, which is surprising. Ofcourse, McAlister could be looking for a price that teams aren’t willing to pay a guy of his age, coming off of his injury.

Price

I think the reason McAlister hasn’t signed with anyone is indeed because he’s waiting to see if a team will let him start (and pay him to do so). If training camps start to open and he still hasn’t found a job, he’ll take whatever he can get. Only then, would I advocate the 49ers pursuing him.

yes I agree that stats are not everything but it is the barometer for comparisons. Especially for fans who do not have the video tape to watch the guys every game like coaches. These corners weren’t just caught because they get burnt..what corner doesn’t? Even Champ Baily, Charlese Woodson get burn from time to time. The main reason they were cut is because of salary cap issues..if they were cut because they were garbage then thats like saying Holt was cut because he doesn’t produce anymore….Walt Harris was what 34 when we brought him in?

wouldn't mind Paymah

I don’t know anything about him, but he is younger then the others and if we are looking for someone to eventually take over for Walt Harris I would rather us get someone who is young and can maybe sit behind him this year and learn some things from him.

Also I wouldn’t mind us looking into drafting Victor Harris out of Va Tech. Not sure where he is projected to go, but I believe he would be worth a 3rd or 4th round pick. He is someone who has the ability to be a shutdown corner and could definitely be plugged into the kick return game.

Simply by pulling on both ends, Patrick Willis can stretch diamonds back into coal

Walt Harris...

came to the team at what most scouts would say past the ideal CB’s age. He had a lot of mileage in him and yet was very steady at his position. Stats and age are sometimes overrated. If I had to choose between those aformentioned players, I would take McAllister (A) and then Lucas (B).

I meant...

Rolle not McAllister. Sorry.

10th pick

If we can’t acquire Orakpo, Brown, or Raji with the pick it has to be Jenkins to help shore up the DB’s

don't want any CB

in free agency. Lucas will demand too much money unless we release walt harris which would be dumb.

Jenkins

People fear he’s looking more and more like a safety, as he’s not as fast as people originally thought and some are even questioning his fluidity/agility. I still haven’t heard anyone question the mental aspect of his game, which if I’m not mistaken, is one of his strengths. If that’s the case, he definitely works at safety, but I still don’t know if he’ll be the tenth best player on the 49ers board.

i want mcalister

but i dont think niners are even looking at him. he would help our secondary alot i think.

O RLY?
i dont think niners are even looking at him.

How are you even able to “think” this? No one knows what Rolle, McAlister, Holt, or [insert other aging veteran who still thinks he can start here] is asking contractually as well as play-time. McAlister is getting up there in years and I doubt any team thinks he’s a definite starter. If that were the case, he would have been signed by now. Clearly, there are question marks about him and/or the demands he is making.

well

if u look at our safetys besides michael lewis who is worthy of starting? goldson? i mean he is average so far but he aint proven yet. i know mcalister is old but i think goldson needs more seasoning for him to be a starter. mcalister is a nice solution at safety for awhile. Now if mcalister wants a big contract or wants to replace nate or walt as a CB i agree with u dont get him. But hey if he aint getting a contract yet then maybe we might get him cheaper when he see’s he aint getting any bites.

I see...

… what you’re saying now. I also think that he could make a decent FS if he actually wants to be one, but there in lies the problem. McAlister probably still believes he can be a starting CORNERBACK right now, and is probably marketing himself as so. As you point out, he’s just not worth that kind of money or guarantee.
