Golden Nuggets: I would like Cutler, but its not happening, folks.

Morning everyone, James here with your Nuggets for today. Yesterday we had kind of a news draught, not a whole lot to work with. I'm sad to report that today it looks like we'll have even less. Please, I respectfully request you NOT lynch me for not having news this day. I'm GIVING IT ALL I'VE GOT..... captain. But anyway, we've got some speculation about Cutler, which I'm pretty certain wont turn out to be anything, we've got more talking about the draft (I think) and whether or not we'll get a QB at pick ten, which, if we do, I think I'll propel whatever drink I'm currently... drinking at my television when I'm watching the draft. We don't need to take one and I hope we don't. Anyway, post some links in the comments if you got 'em, here's what I have for you right now.

Would Cutler look good in 49ers red? I don't necessarily agree with this article, particularly the part about our WR, while they're not an elite bunch I believe this man is speaking very uninformed. (RealFootball365.com)

A very interesting article, one that I'm fairly certain is what's happening. Are the 49ers baiting other teams with this QB drafting talk? Trying to get a trade offer, perhaps? (MVN.com)

From our Rams blogger, a mock draft in which the 49ers are picking WR Jeremy Maclin. I wouldn't be too bothered by this pick, honestly. (TurfShowTimes.com)

This is all I have right now, but I will check back in an hour, two hours, and three hours hoping for some early morning news/opinions. Sorry for the lack of news folks.

Crazy Scenario like you said it won't happen. I wouldn't mind seeing it!!

Cutler will leave Denver, and the niners won’t acquire him because we have no personel to offer aside from Frank Gore. The Broncos just signed two running backs so I doubt they’d be too high up on Gore. The Broncos are not looking for draft picks in a trade. I’m sure they’d take Peppers, and I believe the Panthers would be very intrigued by Cutler. Now if San Francisci wanted to get crazy and trade Vernon Davis or Gore they could acquire Cutler. I don’t believe that our management would do that, but in my opinion that would be the move to trade Gore and get two rookie RB’s I think RB’s are a dime a dozen adn Rathman is that good of a coach!!

by rlott#42 on Mar 16, 2009 3:14 AM PDT reply actions

Denver...

… probably wouldn’t want Gore+Davis for Cutler. They want a good young QB along with higher draft picks. Remember, they hold all the cards in this game.

If Cutler goes

and he’s traded for someone other than a starting QB, who starts for the Broncos this year? Is the new coach throwing the season under the bus because Cutler is having a hissy fit? That doesn’t strike me as likely.

by Bob In Beaverton on Mar 16, 2009 7:24 AM PDT reply actions

Exactly.

They’re not going to trade Cutler, unless they get a (preferably young) starter back in return.

by sfgfan on Mar 16, 2009 8:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Scenarios

If Sanchez or Stafford drops to 10 and we offer (1) the rights to Sanchez, (2) our #1 pick in 2010 and (3) any player on the team (except for Willis, Staley, J Smith, Clements and Gore), I think they might go for it.

If you really think about it, the teams that would be most desperate to trade for Cutler are the ones, like the Niners, that don’t have a young starter. While Denver might want back a good young QB, who would trade their own good young QB for Cutler, especially with the resulting cap circumstances? Plus how many of these guys are there? Not many.

Teams that (probably) wouldn’t trade their QB for Cutler:
Baltimore Ravens – Flacco isn’t going anywhere
Cincinnati Bengals – Probably not, but more possible than most of this list.
Pittsburgh Steelers – Big Ben untouchable.
Houston Texans – Matt Shaub is pretty good and 27. Doubt they’d give up picks to upgrade to Cutler
Kansas City Chiefs* – Just trade for Cassel
Oakland Raiders* – Russell is not going anywhere. Leaving so soon with his contract would criple the team.
Atlanta Falcons – No way they trade Ryan
San Diego Chargers* – untouchable
Dallas Cowboys – untouchable
New York Giants – untouchable
Jacksonville Jaguars – I don’t see it.
Arizona Cardinals* – No way Warner gets traded
Green Bay Packers – Doubt they’ve give up Rogers
New Orleans Saints – uhh uh
Indianapolis Colts* – No way
New England Patriots – nope

Teams with no qb to trade for Cutler (and the ones that want him most)
New York Jets
Chicago Bears
Detroit Lions
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Minnesota Vikings
SF

Teams with old QBs:
Philadelphia Eagles – McNabb is 32
Carolina Panthers – Delhomme is 34
Seattle Seahawks – Hasselbeck is 33
Tennessee Titans* – Collins is 36 (and Vince Young is off the reservation)

That just leaves:
Miami Dolphins – But Pennington is 32.
Buffalo Bills – Maybe. They might want to upgrade Edwards and Edwards is talented enough that Denver might go for it.
Cleveland Browns – Brady Quinn and picks for Cutler could work.
Washington Redskins* – Maybe. Campbell is young and improving, so Denver might be interested.
St. Louis Rams* – Does Bulger count as a solid qb anymore? Plus he is 31.

by kiyoshi on Mar 16, 2009 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions

John Clayton
Cleveland Browns – Brady Quinn and picks for Cutler could work.

John Clayton on Sportscenter is speculating this as the most likely scenario especially since Cleveland is supposedly looking to shop Quinn. He put the Niners name in the running, but really had nothing to back up what we would/could offer.

Just because...

… there is a demand, it does not mean that there will be a deal. Denver holds the keys to the car in this trade, and they don’t HAVE to trade Cutler. He hurts himself more than he’ll hurt Denver if he continues to pout. Denver has a really good QB in their hands right now, so why would they want guys like Edwards and Campbell, still somewhat an unproven commodities?

I just don’t see Denver dealing their proven commodity for some unproven ones, unless the teams holding those unproven ones give up a ton of value in draft picks. Supposedly the Broncos were going to get Cassel and at least a first rounder right? A team giving up the likes of Campbell, Quinn, or Edwards would have to give up multiple first rounders or a first rounder and multiple second rounders.

by sfgfan on Mar 16, 2009 11:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough

It really comes down to how serious Cutler is. If he refuses to play the Broncos will have the ability to fine him, but eventually they’ll have no choice but to trade him. If that’s the case, the Broncos will have to take the best available offer, which will likely be less than equal value because other teams will know that the Broncos are not dealing from a position of strength.

by kiyoshi on Mar 16, 2009 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I suppose.

I suppose that could be the case, but I just don’t see how Cutler holds the power in this. If he refuses to play, he will only hurt himself as he won’t get to practice and his attitude, in the eyes of other teams, can certainly become a problem, as owners do want a player that understands the business side of things to some extent.

by sfgfan on Mar 16, 2009 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions

No Team is going to offer Denver a proven QB

How do you think Denver got themselves in this mess? Rule out any team with an established starting QB cause no team is going to make the switch, nor tempt fate by offering their QB in a deal. That leaves Denver with having to accept a young unproven QB they like (QB like Quinn) or draft picks.

Denver has shot themselves in the foot, Cutler isn’t going to stay on the team.

by bignerd on Mar 16, 2009 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Cutler

I don’t think Cutler has as much power as people make it out to be. Yes, his feelings got hurt by management. Yes, his stance is absolutely understandable. However, he stands to hurt himself a lot more by not playing than just turning things around and prove he should never be slighted again.

The Broncos would flat out apologize for hurting his feelings before they trade him away for an unproven player and a draft pick. Heck, they’ll let him hold out before they do that.

Basically, there are hurt feelings and frustrated people in the entire debacle. But it’s nothing a little winning can’t fix, and I’m pretty sure Cutler thinks he can win, and I’m pretty sure the Broncos think they can win too.

If

If the Niners swap with the Jets in the first round, what’s the likelihood of a good right tackle being available when the Jets’ pick comes up?

So aside from the number of guys in camp, what do the Niners gain in giving up #10? I’m not saying it would be the wrong move, I just need someone with better knowledge to explain the possibilities to me.

by Bob In Beaverton on Mar 16, 2009 7:27 AM PDT reply actions

Roughly...

… looking at the NFL Draft Pick Trade Chart at ESPN (could be dated, but oh well), the Jets would have to at least give up their second round pick from this year and next in addition to their #17 pick in order to provide the 49ers with equal value for just their #10 pick (and maybe throwing in a 4th to balance out he point values).

Basically, the 49ers could pick up two second rounders over the next two years. Highly unlikely the Jets pay that kind of a price though, considering they’re not really one player away from going all the way.

In addition to picking up those two picks, they will probably also be able to land a guy like Oher or even Andre Smith (if for some reason he falls that far). Basically, a RT, if that’s what they’re looking for out of their first round pick, could probably be had at #17.

Again, I doubt that kind of a trade will happen, though.

Thanks.

Anyone know about running backs a few rounds down?

by Bob In Beaverton on Mar 16, 2009 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know of names specifically...

… so if that’s what you’re looking for, then maybe someone else can help you.

From what I understand, though, is that the 3rd through 5th rounds has plenty of potential support backs, especially backs in the mold the 49ers are looking for (slightly bigger or more powerful back to pick up the yards that Gore seems to fail at picking up).

Swapping QB's?

I wouldn’t even give Huard for Cutler! What a CRYBABY! Now he’s demanding a trade, putting his house up for sell? Did he think he was set for life? His overall stats are not that impressive. He has created a MONSTER in Denver. I quess his role model was GODZILLA!!!!!

by LASVEGASNINER on Mar 16, 2009 11:40 AM PDT reply actions

Please.

Not giving a 3rd string QB for a guy who’s proven he can start because he’s a crybaby? That’s beyond irrational.

Cutler has a reason to be upset. I’m not saying I condone the act of whining when things don’t go your way, but I can somewhat understand his position. On top of that, I can’t imagine him sucking if he goes to a team that actually appreciates/rewards him for what he is, a really good QB.

Niners Nation??

Please, Please, Please, don’t refer to anything 49ers as a NATION.. We are the FAITHFUL and NATION refers to our little sisters across the bay in Oakland..

name

I had several other ideas for names, but unfortunately a lot of them were taken. And nation can be generically used for most any sports team.

Niners Nation!

I think its a good name. just because the raiders have that doesnt mean we can’t. plus it sounds better then raider nation. NINERS NATION! NN! La Nacion De Los Niners. It just has a good ring to it. :)

Words

Though the “faithful” is the correct word for fans, this site represent the “NATION”,so I don’t have a problem with it. But the word ’49ER FAITHFUL was termed in the Bay area ,it is something no one can use or take away!
