Salutations Nation,
I feel like there are a lot of things up for discussion these day on the Niners Nation. I'd like to touch on a few of them. Give some opinion and maybe start a conversation. Here we go.
#1. The 10th Overall Pick: So I have a dream pick at this spot. Michael Jenkins at FS. This kid is an animal. Look, I understand the need at right tackle, but if Andre Smith is our only option at that pick I'll pass. Besides, there are plenty of vets out there with a proven record. Runyan maybe? Next up, the pass rushers. Know I would love to see us pick up someone who can make an impact right away, but not everyone is Patrick Willis. So I don't really see the value here. I could see maybe taking Orakpo, maybe. Dude's a specimen. But Harrelson looks like he's developing into a force to be reckoned with coming off the edge. Michael Jenkins would sure up the weakest position on our defense over the last few years. Imagine having a ball hawk killing drives in the middle of the field. Glorious! So get on the "Jenkins at 10" band wagon.
#2. Holt. Sign him if Bruce kicks rocks. Otherwise, invest that money somewhere else. I like the idea of picking up a veteran corner with a little more tread his tires than Walt "Disney" Harris. (I kid. Harris is alright, but you hardly ever see the Niner's secondary doing much of anything.) Which brings me to...
#3 I hear Sumari Rolle's on the market. I'm just saying... ;)
#4 I am behind Shawn Hill 100%. The guy finds a way to win. He's gutsy. You want to know who he reminds me of. Steve Young, that's who. I may be the first to make such an audacious comparison but I watched the Cardinal game where he dove hatless across the first down marker. Dude's down. Let's give him a shot.
What do you think?

1. Jenkins would be fine. Orakpo would be fine. There are other good choices that will be there at 10. But whatever we do we need a potential super star play maker with our first pick. We can’t afford to just fill a hole at OL, or pick a QB for the future. We will have to get an OL, a second RB, and best availables during rounds 2-7. I mean, how much better is a rookie OL at #10 going to be than plugging in Ragge or Simms on the OLine? If we want to get better NOW then we need a stud. And one will be there at #10 that can rush the passer or make him wish he didn’t throw the ball. That’s our biggest hole.
2. No Holt! No more vets at WR. It’s time for Josh and the youngsters to shine. I believe they can do it. And I believe Shawn Hill can get it done. Just give them the ball with anything less than a 14-0 deficit for once and give them a sane game plan. Speaking of which, it’s time for Coach to get the TEs and RBs in the passing game MORE, like we did back in the multiple Superbowl years. Brent Jones and Roger Craig were driving teams crazy. Let’s get our RB’s and Davis and Walker involved more. Nolan was clueless about great offense. It’s time for Coach to show these dudes how the 49ers beat him and De Bears back when he was playing! I’m sure he remembers! I do! And anyone who says the west coast offense is dead now isn’t analyzing what so many other successful offenses in the league are doing right NOW in some form. Grinding away is fine. But when we do pass we need to be SMART, with lots of options. No more first reads and fire. I believe Shawn Hill is capable of reading D. He’s better than a lot of folks think.
3. Samari Rolle just isn’t that good anymore. Sorry. And he’ll ask for too much. Let’s re-sign Strickland and look to the middle rounds for more if that’s the need. But we already have a lot of guys who might come along and fill that role — Reggie Smith, T Brown. Etc. Seems like we need a stud on D? I agree, but not another stud CB. A stud pass rusher! Everyone complains about the 49s on 3rd downs. Did anyone notice how many MINUTES the opposing QB seemed to have during so many 3rd downs over the last few years? It’s sick. No one can cover guys running around for that long trying to find the first down marker. We need to slam some dirt in the QB’s face if he holds the ball for more than a five step drop. Like Charles Haley! We need their worst nightmare staring them in the face on 3rd downs. They need to feel rattled. Then our DBs will look like supermen. I know we have a hole to fill with Roman — no doubt. But whether it’s filled by Goldson or a Jenkins in the draft, it aint gonna matter if the opposing QB is sitting there yawning, waiting for someone to get open.
4. I like Hill too. He’s gutsy. And NOTHING has ever been handed to him. Think about the stress and no confidences that guy has been put through for years now. I think we all need to remind ourselves of something (and this is coming from someone who never missed a single game played by either Montana or Young). You don’t need a super stud at QB to win the superbowl. Let’s not tell anyone, but Eli Manning is not the best QB on earth, although the game he had againt NE that day was hysterically great. I applaud that. But that could have been Shawn Hill having the game of his life too!
You don’t believe me? Check out this cool stat below: Starting superbowl QBs for both teams going back to 1995. There are a LOT of names in there that were Shawn Hills on very good teams who got lucky, stayed healthy, and got hot at the end of the year. And who had a monster D !! So let’s keep our perspective.

but notice
the team that won a super bowl usually had the all-pro at QB instead of the ‘shaun hill’

Jenkins @ #10
I think I’d be okay with Jenkins at #10, but I’m not sure a lot of other people will be. Jenkins supposedly had a great football motor, which works as a safety, but some doubt his physical talents. Not that he needs to be a world class athlete at safety, but I’m sure others expect him to be.
With that said, I don’t think free safety has been the biggest need for the 49ers’ defense over the past few years. Their biggest bug-a-boo, in my opinion, has been a toss-up between an elite pass-rushing OLB and a true NT. Fix those two things, and the 49ers’ secondary instantly looks better.
Agreed.
A pass rush would do wonders for our secondary. But I think we are already in the process of developing said pressure. Harrelson’s strong and getting better every snap. If lawson can get healthy we may already have something in that department. I can’t argue about the D-Line. We are terribly undersized at NT. Sopaoga is tough, but I think he would be better suited as a DT in a 4-3 as opposed to a 3-4.
In fact, here’s something I just thought of. Looking at the 49ers, there aren’t many players with trade value. Asides the superstars: Willis, Gore, Clement and Smith, who on our current roster could entice a trade. A trade, maybe even involving Cutler? Maybe? Possibly? Nolan has experience with Sopaoga. Throw in some draft selections and we might just be cooking with fire. In any case, how do we feel about shopping Sopaoga and getting ourselves a truly nasty NT?

Out of the players...
… you list as having any trade value, I only think Willis has any significant trade value.
A running back who has had surgery on BOTH knees and a shoulder (or two?) that already has four seasons under his belt really isn’t worth a whole lot. A CB who is on the wrong side of 30 and a fairly large contract really isn’t worth that much. Smith, I can be on the fence with, but he’s being paid pretty good DE money for a player who doesn’t do much more than play a 3-4 DE (which really isn’t worth a whole lot to most teams).
Basically, the 49ers have no trade value, period. They can hope to trade picks to trade down or trade lower players for additional LATE picks. But there is no way they have enough to acquire someone of Cutler’s caliber. The Broncos will not trade a proven QB for a shot at a rookie QB who may not even get drafted in the first round if it were any other year (Sanchez/Stafford). Cutler is a basically a pipe dream that the media has wrongfully boasted as a possibility to stir up things.
As for unloading Sopoaga to acquire an NT, I don’t know how you would go about doing that. Elite NT’s are not very common, and that’s why the 49ers still don’t have one. Most of the best NTs in the NFL were first round picks (not necessarily top of the draft, but middle to late first rounders). The 49ers, if they want to get a young NT, will have to at the very least take a similar kind of risk. Many of clamored for BJ Raji, and he could definitely be worth the risk. Problem is, he may not be there and it wouldn’t take trading Sopoaga to get him. Others have suggested Raji’s running-mate, Ron Brace as a possibility in the second round, and I think he’s definitely worth a look, too.
Bottom line, I don’t think the 49ers need to trade any of their players, as they won’t bring much back (if anything at all).
hi but notice!
1. Let’s just worry about getting to the Super Bowl first! No pass rush on the other side of Justin, we prob won’t even get to the playoffs. . . .again.
2. Brett Farve used to be seen as a Shawn Hill. Most great QBs grow into the position over multiple years: i.e. Elway — Mr. Interception for many years; Steve Young; Roethlisberger; then there was Jim Plunkett! But in all these cases you have to have a team behind you that can play and make a mockery of the other team’s offense, as did most Niner teams when Joe was playing. Joe (best QB ever and my hero) did not always have great games, but the D in the great years was overpowering. Fred Dean, Haley, who Seifert stupidly gave to the Cowboys just because the guy peed on his car. If I’m Seifert I drive my wife’s car over and tell him to pee on that one too. He sure made Eric Davis and Ronny Lott look even better than they already were. We need one more monster Pass Rusher and the Niners and Shawn Hill will look a while lot better.
Maybe we're not confident in our coaches develeping talent
I would take Michael Johnson with the 10th overall pick if Orakpo or Brown are off the board. I may consider Johnson over Brown due to his coverage skills and length. I still feel he has the most upside adn he can make an impact this year if coached well and motivated.
Johnson at 10
RB with 2nd pick
ramses Barden if he falls to 3rd rnd
Pat White if available or QB
OT, DT, MLB, and another RB any three to finish we can go with a vet at RT
I think that the 40 is the most overrated test that players do going into the draft
that being said, separate from that, I’m not sold on Jenkins’ overall athletic ability and I’d hate to see him turn into a stiff-safety like Roy Williams
I'm going to kill all of you.....
It’s SHAUN Hill.
Not Shawn, not Sean, Shaun.
Please learn our starting quarterback’s name correctly.
Thanks,
J
MURS for President!!!!!!!
Whatever dude.
I wrote this post at 1am. I could have very well spelled “Hill” incorrectly.
And if Shaun wanted people to spell his name correctly, he wouldn’t spell it like that. I’m guessing this a stems from insecurity issues he went through in elementary school. “No mama, I wanna spell my name S-H-A-U-N!!! Gosh…”

you should probably take his advice
if you want to be taken seriously around these parts. It may seem trivial, but how are we supposed to take what you type seriously if you can’t even spell the starting QB’s name right?
Simply by pulling on both ends, Patrick Willis can stretch diamonds back into coal
Darn
And I was going to make a clever comment like “Why are we talking about Washington Nationals pitcher, ”http://www.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=429718" target="new">Shawn Hill"?

How am I supposed to take this jtoj character seriously...
if he can’t identify a joke. Come on man, really?
I digress. A thousand apologies for my spelling error. I agree with you. Everyone needs to spell names correctly to be taken seriously. But as my last message states, it was late. It won’t happen again. Well, it might, but not if I can help it. Jtoj, you are forgiven.

That last line was another attempt at humor...
And it was “dead to rights” funny on this end. ;)

Draft
I don’t see that the 49ers draft a DE/OLB pass rusher in the first round. Not the 49ers don’t need one, but the made no attempts to sign a OT. We signed Demetric Evans who could be a pass rusher. So it seems to me that they would want to address the pass rusher after OT whenever that may be.
