Jason Taylor Released, Pursue?
Press Release - The Washington Redskins announced today that they have released defensive end Jason Taylor.
In 2008, his lone season with the club, Taylor started eight of the 13 games in which he played. He totaled 36 tackles, 3.5 sacks and nine passes defensed.
"Jason Taylor was a real professional during his time with the Redskins," Head Coach Jim Zorn said. "He played hurt, but still gave his best effort to be prepared and play hard every week. We wish him and his family the very best.
Thoughts? Should we pursue? Would we still have the money if this Warner thing goes through??I still think he has some left in the tank.

HMMM...
He’s a true 4-3 guy unless you bring him in during passing downs… but… maybe????

The Patriots will jump all over Jason Taylor. Even though the Patriots have been a dynasty this decade they could never handle Miami because of Jason Taylor. The Pats love picking up guys that kill them and Taylor wants a SB chance.

Yes
Lets do this absolutely. Sign him to a one year offer. Seems worth it as long as its not long term

No thanks.
Let’s focus on Igor instead, and get our pass rush guy in the 2nd or 3rd round. If a guy comes in and has to learn the system, may as well be a rookie, right?
Especially if we land Warner, our first rounder has to prioritize on OT.

Id rather a potential HOF, all pro guy learn the system
and mentor the yuounger guys even if it is for one year

ok, I hear ya
Worked with Bruce, why not with Taylor, right?
Fair enough. And Taylor does have a tiny bit of experience getting to the QB.
However, the reason the Redskins released Taylor was because they wanted to add a clause to his contract that Taylor rejected. They wanted to add a work out bonus that meant Taylor would earn X amount of dollars if he participated in 29 of the 35 scheduled offseason programs. When he declined, the teams said bye bye.
Could Taylor come into San Fran and learn a system without being there? No. Would he want to participate? Based on the past two offseasons, no.

No
We had this discussion in the off season. He has no position in the 3-4.

Indeed we did
Did a quick search and there were 3 discussions in the space of two months about this guy:

my thoughts exactly
we’ve been over this…
Still defending Rich Aurilia, and the Niners' classic unis

we’ve been over this…
Apparently not. These Jason Taylor comments just keep coming but nobody who’s an advocate of signing him wants to address that he’s positionless in the 3-4.

NO
We should get Igor Olshansky instead, young and a true 3-4 DE.

TOTALLY AGREE!
Much rather have a young guys instead of Jason Taylor. Taylor is going to want at least 8.5 mill (which is what he more or less turned down from Washington). The real reason Jason Taylor supposedly was released was because he didn’t want an addendum added to his contract where he would have to work out with his team in the offseason. I don’t Twinkle Toes to waste our time and not be in shape and be a bust. Go Young!

I havent heard
The niners rumored to be pursuing Igor anywhere so I dont see why everyone is saying we should focus on him, I mean Ive heard Douglas coming back to us but thats nothing to get too excited over either. We need someone to rush the passer, if Taylor could still do it I would say yes, but after 11 sacks two years ago to 3 sacks last year Im not so sure he can still get to the qb.

Because St. Ignatius.
I think 90% of the reason people are talking about Igor so much is because he’s from SF and specifically went to SI. Honestly, if he was from Texas or something, I really doubt people would be talking about him so much. Now, with that said, obviously we should give him a shot.
I also don’t think, whether or not we’re going to after Igor, that we should get an old guy who’s been incredibly lazy the past couple of years and who doesn’t have a position in our scheme. And that’s what Taylor is.

let sign him
maybe he will have a bounce back yr.

We can probably pick him up cheap. I think he’s a good short-term solution.
JAI HO!
by Rishi on Mar 3, 2009 7:55 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Short term solution for what?
Where would he play? How would he be more valuable to the Niners in a defense where he has no position than to some other team that actually runs a defensive scheme that has a position for him (see the 4-3).

for one
We’ll have two beasts to worry about on the line.
Maybe Justin Smith ends up getting rewarded for his hard work.

Why do you think he'll be a beast?
He’ll be extremely undersized (like 50lbs undersized) for a 3-4 DE which would lead to teams smash-mouthing the [site decorum] out of the Niners. Again, Jason Taylor has no position in the 3-4.

what im saying is maybe Smith won’t get triple teamed now…..

you don’t think he’d be a good fit at OLB, I mean he did play that position his junior year in Akron.
by sundaysfinest on Mar 3, 2009 3:36 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That was...
… how many years ago? The guy is undersized and hasn’t played a significant coverage role since entering the NFL. Wasn’t part of his falling out with Miami the 3-4 scheme?

The falling out...
I thought it did have a lot to do with the 3-4 scheme but maybe the blame can totally be placed on Dancing With The Stars.

when was he falling out? his last year in miami he had 11 sacks, since 2000 he had double digit sacks in all but 2 seasons which were 8.5 and 9.5. I agree with you that he’s getting up there in age but i don’t understand where the falling out was due to miami’s scheme?
by sundaysfinest on Mar 3, 2009 4:14 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Before the start of last season
Parcells and Taylor had a falling out and that’s why Miami ended up trading him to Washington. There was talk that Taylor either didn’t fit or didn’t want to play in a 3-4 (my memory is a little fuzzy) and that Parcells took exception to Taylor missing “optional”(?) training because of his commitment to Dancing With The Stars.
