Cal Poly WR Ramses Barden steps it up at his Pro Day
A guy that has been getting face-time here at Niners Nation is Cal Poly WR standout Ramses Barden. I think a big part of that is the ridiculous size he brings to the table (6'6, 229 lbs). As they say, you can't teach 6'6. I definitely think he's a guy the 49ers might target and ran a scouting report accordingly.
I bring Barden up again because Cal Poly ran their Pro Day today in conjunction with San Jose State, UC Davis, Sacramento State and Menlo College (has Menlo ever produced and NFL player? An Arena player? CFL? Anybody?). At last month's Combine, Barden posted an official 40 yard dash time of 4.61. The general consensus has been that that was a very solid time given the size he brings to the table. So what did he do at his Pro Day?
Well, he rolled out a pair of impressive 40 times: 4.51 and 4.55. Even if you discount those times a little bit due to "home field advantage," thinks are definitely looking up for Barden. Rotoworld went so far as to project him as a possible late second, early third round pick. That could certainly roll him right into the 49ers wheelhouse with the 10th pick of the 3rd round.
Personally I would love to get a crack at Ramses Barden. If I had to consider an "ideal draft" at this point, it would probably be B.J. Raji with the 10th pick (this is ideal after all), maybe OT Jamon Meredith in the second round and Barden in the third round. What do people think about this? I realize Raji is probably going higher than that, but if he did fall and the 49ers went with these picks, would people be satisfied?

I'd take it
DT, OT and WR with the first three picks? I would not be unhappy with that.
Ofcourse, I’m still pulling for Crabtree at 10 (can’t I dream?), but Raji, Meredith and Barden would be a suitable first three.
Please, please, please (and I’m going to repeat this every chance I can), take Gartrell Johnson at some point!!!

Yes, yes, & yes.
I know people’s fascination w/ Crabtree (& I like him too). I just think that this year is the wrong year to take a wideout that high, and I don’t like taking wideouts that high in general anyway (learning curve in NFL is pretty steep for most of them).
Raji and an OT both fill bigger needs as well as being appropriately slotted for our draft position. I really hope Raji falls to 10, but it seems unlikely. And Barden in the early 3rd would be far less of a reach IMO. But I do like your thinking Fooch.

Fooch, If Raji is not available and the 9ers take Andre Smith at # 10 who would you pick for the 2nd round?

OLB maybe?
What about a guy like Clint Sintim from Virginia? I wouldn’t mind getting a big 3-4 defensive end, but there just don’t seem to be any guys like that worth grabbing. All the defensive ends are a bit undersized for the 3-4.

According to Ramses his time was in the 4.4’s
Rafael Rodriguez: Your number 8 organizational prospect before stepping a foot on American soil and has "looked just super so far," according to Felipe Alou...according to Baggs.

Interesting
Found a link indicating his times ranged from 4.48 to 4.54. That same link said this:
Coupled with the story Friday by NFL.com senior columnist Thomas George that said the consensus report on Barden is that he won’t last past the second round, it’s a great start to the weekend for the 6-foot-6, 230-pounder from Altadena.
Might be a reach high in the second round, so unless they deal for a late second rounder, might not be able to get him.

Fooch
I personally thought that Sopoaga would have been a decent enough fit to play NT with Franklin there as well. With those two J Smith and also Evans from FA I think our D Line will be a lot better this year. I just read on Manny Lawson getting his weight up to 250 from his usually 235 playing weight and coming off of that Ligament surgery he should be back to full speed this season. I honestly think we are jumping the gun on our pass rush saying it isn’t good enough. Yes it needs improvement, but experience goes a long way with any job you do.
Ideal Draft
1-Orakpo, Maybin, or Brown
2-Jamon Meredith……I love this site becuz yo0u research your stuff real well
3-Ramses Barden
4- Pat White
5- a RB you mentioned previously in one of your hopeful mocks
6-Change of pace RB the fastest on the board or depth on the OL
7-hopefully you can find a Marques Colston but I’d drafted the tallest receiver in the draft despite his talent. Then I’d lock him in the training room with Sing for 2 weeks

RB in the 5th
Gartrell Johnson?
Do you really see them drafting two running backs and two receivers? They have depth needs in several positions, so I’m not sure that would happen.
As far as tallest receivers in the draft, Ramses Barden apparently is the second tallest. The only receiver taller than Barden is Thomas Breaux of Towson. He’s listed at ESPN as 6’6 7/8, but only 198 pounds. That is one skinny dude. Barden is listed at 229…

Trade?
What if we traded our 10 overall valued at 1300pts 2 philly for their 1 round 21 overall 800pts, 2nd round 52 overall 380pts, 3rd round 83 overall 175pts adding up to 1355. given Philly 2 1st round pick 10 and 28 overall. Given us a total of 11 picks overall with our compensatory selections in the 5th & 6th Round.
1-WR Jeremy Maclin
2-RB Shonn Greene
2-OT Phil Loadholt/ OT Jamon Meredith, South Carolina
3-DE/OLB Lawerence Sidbury
3-WR Ramses Barden, Cal Poly-SLO
4-DT Sammie Lee Hill, 6-4 330 Combine 40 Time: 5.11
5-RB Gartrell Johnson
5-S Jamarca Sanford, Ole Miss
6-DT Myron Pryor, Kentucky or DT Roy Miller, Texas
6- Best player avaible
7- Best Player Avaible

I like that, except Greene
I’d rather see the team address pass rush or OT before adding a RB to compliment Gore. Especially if we can land Gartrell in the 5th round, and give Clayton a serious shot at getting in the rotation.

yea I was thinking maybe a safety but I think Goldson has it on lock if we Maclin was there with the 21 pick go with best player avaible and maybe Darrius Heyward-Bey or Brian Robiskie, Ohio State, who’s father is a coach in the NFL.

Jamon Meredith - How good is he?
While I like the idea of getting the “best available” player with the 10th pick and I’m open to that player not being an OT, I can’t help but think about the drop-off between a guy like Andre Smith and a guy like Jamon Meredith. Reading through ESPN’s scouting on these players I’m struck by the difference in strength and in the ability to run block.
Here’s what ESPN has to say about some key guys the 49ers will be looking at (assuming Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe aren’t still available at 10 – if they are we should jump and grab them). I’ll focus on run blocking since that seems to be at the core of what the Niners will need from their RT.
Andre Smith
Run Block Grade: 1 (Exceptional)
An absolute mauler. Overpowering at the point of attack. Takes solid angles and is almost always in position if the block is at the line of scrimmage. Shows good upper-body power and even stronger in the lower body. Drives defenders off the line of scrimmage. Only small concern here is that he sometimes is a bit slow getting into position as a second-level run blocker.
Michael Oher
Run Block Grade: 1 (Exceptional)
Is thickly built with a wide base. Takes solid angles and wins nearly every battle once locked on. Works to sustain; drives his legs and generally gets a good surge. Range as a second-level blocker is adequate but not ideal
Eben Britton
Run Block Grade: 3 (Average)
Uses quick first step to beat most defenders off the ball and get into strong initial position. Does a nice job of reaching defenders and cutting off the backside. Can engulf and collapse smaller defenders. Is relatively smooth when climbing to the second level but will struggle to hit moving targets at times. Feet occasionally go dead upon contact. He doesn’t create a new line of scrimmage and he lacks ideal strength to drive defenders back when necessary.
Jamon Meredith
Run Block Grade: 3 (Average)
Does a very nice job with his first step, as well as his angles as a run blocker. Generally gets in great position and does so while maintaining a good pad level. However, while he works to finish, he simply lacks the initial pop and lower-body power to sustain as many blocks as he should
Steven Beatty
no scouting report
6’6", 307lbs, UConn
Phil Loadholt
Run Block Grade: 3 (Average)
Doesn’t get into position quickly enough at times, which leads to him lunging and/or diving at defenders’ legs too frequently. When he gets to the spot in time, though, he wins most battles in the phone booth. He has strong hands and uses his massive frame to engulf. While he’s not explosively powerful, he does work to the whistle and shows some toughness/competitiveness when attempting to finish off the defender.
Put me in the Andre Smith / Michael Oher camp.

THROW IT TO RAMSES!
Seriously. Being a Poly student I got to see him up close enough to see the aura form around him as he made one handed grabs over cornerbacks.

Iid be wary of Barden in the third at the Niners' slot
So, unfortunately I think he’ll be gone by the time we pick in the 4th and we probably won’t get him
