If it came down to it, how would you react to Mark Sanchez bieng taken at 10?

Sanchez is a fourth year Junior who redshirted his first year (2005) at USC. He appeared in six games, completing three out of seven passes for 63 yards and one INT. In 2007, Sanchez was the primary backup for John David Booty. He started three games in place of the injured Booty, completing 14-69 passes for 695 yards (60.5%) with 7 TDs and 5 INTs. Sanchez was named the Trojans' full time QB in the spring of 2008. He sustained a knee injury prior to USC's season opening game against Virginia. Nevertheless, Sanchez was able to make his first start of 2008 against the overwhelmed Cavaliers. He had an outstanding 2008 campaign, passing for 34 TDs with only 10 INTs. Sanchez had an outstanding performance against the vaunted Penn State defense in the 2009 Rose Bowl. He was voted Offensive Most Valuable Player after his 413 yards (28-35) and 4 TDs performance. He also ran for another score.

Big (6-3) and blessed with a powerful right arm, Sanchez looks like the second coming of former Trojans great Carson Palmer. At times during the season he looked to be "a man playing against boys". Sanchez also possesses good mobility and is deceivingly fast (4.74). Physically, he has everything NFL teams covet in a QB prospect. He is still assimilating to the progression process and he could use more experience, but he is ready for the NFL now.

Sanchez is a sure first rounder (could go as high as one overall now that he has declared). During the later part of the season there were indications he was ready to declare. Factors such as the renewal discussion around the NFL of a rookie salary cap pushed Sanchez into the 2009 Draft pool. Plus, he remembers the experience of Matt Leinart just a few years ago.

Typical Niners if they pick a QB at #10

Avoiding what we really need, creating drama for no reason at QB, missing out on another quality player at a position of need – basically the same ol’ stupid stuff

by Neon on Mar 21, 2009 3:05 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

the answer is..

they wont, the signing of damon huard tells us that. they are happy with the competition between alex smith and shaun hill, and at this point i too am contempt. at least for one more year, this is both of their last years to PROVE that they are the franchise quarterback and sing and scott can actually build around them not make up for them. stafford and sanchez COULD be good quarterbacks in the nfl but that is yet to be seen, and as NEON said there is no reason to have another 3-way battle at the QB postition, that is….until next year.

by 2ninersonecup on Mar 21, 2009 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Huard?

I don’t think the Huard signing tells us that. He signed a one year deal and if they really want a QB early in the draft they could very easily cut Huard with no real cap ramifications.

Also, do you mean you too are content (as opposed to contempt)?

by Fooch on Mar 21, 2009 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

add it to the list

also I agree, signing Huard means nothing. I still don’t think we should draft a QB but I’m not convinced we won’t

What's that got to do with knowing the English language?

Never having played the game myself, it still does not mean that I do not have a valid opinion as to whether the niners will draft a QB at #10 or not – or, for that matter, what they should or should not do with regards to a number of other issues concerning the niners. That is the right I, or anybody else, has for being a fan of the team and the game itself.
The fact that both Fooch and wjackalope pointed out your grammatical error means they were trying to help you to ensure you do not repeat the mistake, and having a gentle laugh in the process. Take it on the chin – it was your error after all!!

i would

constantly curse at the TV saying what the **** was that espically if there is someone like orakpo, brown, raji, crabtree still on the board! no but seriously we dont need a qb at #10 we have bigger holes to fill. Plus the drama it would create with a 3 qb battle, i think if we do get a qb in the draft make it in the third rd. or later

WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!

Ok maybe not that extreme, but I personally believe that Sanchez isn’t even in the top 5 QBs in college football. Mccoy, Stafford, Bradford, Tebow, and maybe even Keenum or Robinson are all better right now than Sanchez. He may be the second best QB in this year’s draft class, but that does not mean he deserves a top ten pick. If those players were in the draft this year, he may not even be a second round pick.

hes better than Tebow.. for the NFL at least

Sanchez is a helluva player. I dont want him for the same reason mentioned above. we have more pressing needs, and we can wait till next year.. take a shot at mccoy, bradford, etc. (no tebow) if need be.

This might be the most glowing praise for Sanchez that I’ve ever seen.

He’s a very toolsy guy, but he rode the coattails of that defense for quite a few wins, and wouldn’t have declared for the draft this season if not for scouts overreacting to his bowl game performance and the non-declarations of many of the nation’s other top quarterbacks.

Do you think Sanchez would even be part of the discussion in a season that Colt McCoy is in the draft?

I don’t think he’s a top ten pick, and I do think the 49ers can get better value at other positions of more-or-less equal need with that high of a pick.

I’d be pretty disappointed if they draft him.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

No way on Sanchez.

As nice as he may look on paper and film, the niners got far more important spaces to fill.

IF they do however, decide to draft a QB, I would simply be really disappointed at the team. They have had really bad draft moments and seeing them pick Sanchez would suggest that they are picking the best talent available. But looking at the brighter side. I dont think Singletary would even consider Sanchez.

The risk reward parameters don’t line up.

The reallity is Alex Smith deserves the right to have the same offense for more than 1 year and time to develop within it.

I think I've said it before...

… and I’ll say it again. If McCloughan takes EITHER Stafford or Sanchez at #10, he should be fired. Neither QB is worth that kind of investment, as neither would probably be high first round picks (if first rounders at all) in most other drafts.

by sfgfan on Mar 22, 2009 10:44 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Doesn't this bring up the argument of...

Best player available vs Position of need.
If Sanchez does fall to #10 and McCloughan thinks he is the best player available won’t the niners draft him cos that is their policy?
This is, for me, the reason why I don’t like that policy. Surely, the policy should be a combination of both – take the BPA but only those that fill the positions of most need to your team. To me, the biggest need that the niners have is a pass-rusher and therefore should only be looking to fill that need with the #10 pick – either by picking a NT to command a double-team thus allowing the pass-rushers we have to get to the QB easier, or a DE/OLB to be used as a straight pass-rusher. A RT can then be taken in the 2nd rnd.

by Ninerfromacrossthepond on Mar 22, 2009 11:36 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think part of sfgfan’s thinking here is that it would be preposterous to believe that either one is one of the 10 best players available in the entire draft to begin with. If nine guys get drafted, and Sanchez or Stafford are the highest that the 49ers have leftover on their overall board, then something must be wrong with scouting. I would think.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

by howtheyscored on Mar 22, 2009 1:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

As...

… HTS points out for me (thanks Howie), my opinion is based on my feeling that neither Stafford or Sanchez are worth a top 10 pick. In my opinion (and I’m not the only one here or anywhere), they probably wouldn’t even be taken in the top 20 or 25 in most other drafts.

My board, if I actually constructed one, would (probably) easily have 15 to 20 guys I would take before even considering Stafford or Sanchez.

by sfgfan on Mar 23, 2009 9:25 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

To take it a little further...

… I’d take a RT before Sanchez, as I think he would provide more value.

I’m just not a really big fan of their scouting reports, I suppose. I haven’t really watched a lot of SC games, so I can’t say much about his actual playing ability (but neither can most people, really, as he hardly played?).

by sfgfan on Mar 23, 2009 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Have a feeling though

that either Stafford or Sanchez will go in the top ten, cos I see Detroit and Seattle having a need for a QB maybe even Denver moving into the top ten to ensure they get the one they want – if it looks their man is the one to go.All this could be good for us as it means a player of more value for us could fall to us at #10.
You know better than me whether they deserve to go that high though, I leave that to your better knowledge on this.

by Ninerfromacrossthepond on Mar 23, 2009 7:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would be happy...

… if both QBs went before the 49ers went. That would mean that five of the first ten will consist of Stafford, Monroe, J.Smith, Sanchez, and Curry. That can MAYBE leave one of Raji, Orakpo, Brown, or Crabtree available to the 49ers. Of course, it could also happen that all four of those guys will be gone, too, and the 49ers are still left with choosing out of A.Smith, Oher, Maybin, or Maclin. None of those options really make me happy, and I don’t really know which I would prefer. Maybin has somewhat started to grow on me a little, but I don’t know if I think he’d be worth more to the team than A.Smith or even Oher.

by sfgfan on Mar 24, 2009 8:57 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Crabtree

Assuming Isaac Bruce decides to return for another season, and Crabtree is still available at #10 when its our turn would you take him at that point above all else?
Even if another player, eg Brown, is also available and and fills a need for us more than Crabtree would.
This is kinda the point I was trying to make above-in this instance Crabtree would be the BPA but selecting Brown fills a position of need. What would you do? Also, what is your opinion to my question above?

by Ninerfromacrossthepond on Mar 24, 2009 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Crabtree

If the choice was between Crabtree or Brown/Orakpo, I’d go with Crabtree, almost without any hesitation.

by sfgfan on Mar 24, 2009 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

As for your question above...

… about taking Sanchez if the team feels he’s the BPA: I don’t view Sanchez as a BPA in the top 10. I think I’ve made that point several times in recent weeks. I don’t even view Stafford as a top 10 player. I think Stafford or Sanchez get drafted in the top 10 because some other team needs a QB so desperately (i.e. Lions?) that they settle for the QB over someone clearly better (i.e. Monroe or J.Smith).

by sfgfan on Mar 24, 2009 11:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i hope

they pick qb cuz then we would have a nice shot at a crabtree or DE, OLB, OT that we need

by 49ersAllTheWay on Mar 24, 2009 11:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Assuming...

… that “they” means the Lions or any other teams in the top nine, I totally agree.

by sfgfan on Mar 25, 2009 8:52 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

With respect...

I would be okay with drafting Sanchez or Stafford. I could be happier. I would be much happier with Everette Brown or a great right tackle. But assuming those guys are off the board (and there’s a good chance they could be) and there’s no one who wants to trade up (less likely but still very possible) I wouldn’t mind having a Sanchez coming down the line as a QB of the Future. It doesn’t mean we’re going to start him now. It means that he can develop, work underneath our guys, stay on the sidelines, and eventually come into his own and develop into a starter. And the guy does have a lot of potential, he’s got a great arm, played in a pro offense, scouts seem to love him. It’s not what would happen in my ideal world, certainly, and I think it’s much more likely that we trade down rather than draft Sanchez. But I wouldn’t mind having him on the team.

I'd be OK with it

With the number of 3-4 teams picking in front of us the OLB the Niners might like could be gone.

If Orakpo, Brown, Raji, Monroe, J. Smith, Crabtree, Stafford, and Curry are all gone by the 10th pick, which could very well be likely, who do you take?

Oher and Andre Smith aren’t worth the 10th pick if they’re being drafted as a RT and I think the Niners interest in Marvel Smith hints that the Niners might think the same. Then you’d be looking at Sanchez, Maclin or probably Malcom Jenkins. I don’t think Maclin is worth the 10th pick, I would much rather trade down and take one of Heyward-Bey, Nicks or Britt. Malcom Jenkins sounds like he’s destined to play FS at the NFL level so I’d be down with that pick but a “QB of the future is needed” and while Sanchez may be a gamble and may be unproven he does fit the bill.

If the Niners do get stuck in the scenario I described above it would probably be their worst case scenario and I’d imagine they’re exhaust all of their outlets to try and trade down to someone else who likes Sanchez.

No matter what happens I really don’t think Sanchez would be the worst pick the Niners have made in recent drafts.

Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.
