"We got all the people in place I think we need," he said. "It’s just a matter of us transitioning that to the football field and being a better defense. I’d expect us to be for sure top-10, hopefully top-5, that’s what we’re shooting for. Our job is to be the best we can be and with the talent we have, we can be in the top-10 or top-5, for sure."

Well my friend

justin smith u better play ur butt off and sack the QB bout 15 times this year cuz if were gonna be top 10, top 5, then were gonna need a whole lot of JUSTIN SMITH not to mention other players stepping up plus a good draft

In the article it also said,

we’re going to use a basic 3-4 .. More of players knowing their assignments less “tricks” as Justin Smith put it.

Well

I love Justin Smith and all, but a top 10 or top 5 defense? We’ll definitely need someone on the team to step up and get 12+ sacks for that to happen, unless everyone (in the front 7) decides to get 6-7 a piece.

The better our offense is at the time of possession battle, the better our defense will be. We still need a pass rush, and we still need someone to make turnovers in the secondary. Top 15, more likely. Top 10, need some help. Top 5, need some major progession made, and rookies to contribute heavily.

rooks

hopefully a orakpo or brown to contribute to our pass rush cuz to be a top10 or 5 were gonna need to put up some nice sack totals

imagine if we drafted orakpo in the 1st and brace in the 2nd, our front 7:

                                            Smith——————-Brace—————Balmer
                             Lawson—————-Willis—————-Spikes——————Orakpo

who would want to run on that defense???

Interesting

It’ll be interesting to see if Lawson gets the start over Haralson the base alignment.

if you start lawson over Haralson

Why would you need Orakpo?? Haralson had 8.5 sacks last year and Lawson had 3

Lawson over Haralson

The IS a reason the team may start Lawson over Haralson, though. IF Haralson doesn’t show the coaching staff enough in coverage, they may feel a little more comfortable with Lawson at least splitting time with Haralson

Of course, the team didn’t seem to have too much faith in Lawson’s coverage skills last year, either. That could have been due to him maybe not being 100%, but it could also be that he’s not as good in coverage as the team let on in years previous. I guess we’ll see what happens come preseason.

It will definitely be interesting to see what the team does with Lawson/Haralson if they take a pass rusher (Brown/Orakpo/Maybin) in the first round.

6-7 a piece.

I would prefer that everyone gets this than one guy get 20.

Defense looked good at the end of last year...

Does anyone know or have a breakdown of how improved the defense was during the last 6 weeks of the season compared to the previous 10?

They started looking pretty good towards the end of the year.
