Who will be the surprise 49ers pick?

FOOCH'S NOTE 10:14AM: Great discussion topic.  Sanchez is my surprise pick, although if people are saying it so much elsewhere, is it really a surprise?  Also, a guy like Knowshon Moreno would shock me, but is it remotely realistic?

Last year, as you all remember, with the 29th pick in the draft, the 49ers selected Kentwan Balmer, a defensive tackle from UNC.  I think there was one reaction we can all agree we had: shock.  Nobody saw that one coming, not at all.  Many of us were thinking the Niners might go with an OT, or maybe a WR.  The first round had some big surprises and there were a lot of tackles off the board early in the draft.  Maybe this changed the 49ers plans.  But with guys like DeSean Jackson, James Hardy, and Malcolm Kelly all on the board when the pick came up, a lot of us thought we'd go with a big name receiver.  Instead we took Balmer, a guy we had probably barely considered before the draft.

Sadly I wouldn't be shocked if the Niners did something similar this year, and by that I mean take a player none of us are expecting.  So who do you think will be the shocking pick?

My money's on Sanchez.  I guess this wouldn't come as a shock, but it would piss a lot of us off.  Still, most of us think the Niners won't go with a QB even though a lot of less informed people out there certainly think we will.  So in my book, I'd be pretty shocked if we picked him.  But let's explore guys that would be really shocking: Moreno? Vontae Davis? Larry English?

Your pick for shocking Niners selection if you please...

Nice surprise pick

Ted, meet Mike – solid for 10 years at ILB with this pick

by Neon on Mar 26, 2009 10:24 AM PDT up reply actions

Do you really think Manaluga is a Ted?

He seems more like a playmaker, not one to take on blocks and free up VD.

Blind devotion.

Maualuga

I think he’s best as a 4-3 MLB, but will probably fit also at 3-4 WILB (Mike). However, since the 49ers already have a Mike, if they were to take him, he’d be playing the Ted. I don’t think he’d be a very good 3-4 OLB candidate, but maybe that’s just me.

If you want to be taken seriously around these parts you need to at least know the initials of our starting Mike LB. I mean come on… (imagine the snarkiest voice saying that last bit.)

Sucks when we make mistakes, huh?

Surprise 1st rounders

Good question!

I think if we traded our 10 and moved down a few spots I could see the following players being available that would be a surprise and make sense if we also got another 2nd rounder —

Robert Ayers
Malcolm Jenkins
Knowshon Moreno
Chris Wells
Jeremy Macklin

Serious surprise, move down further in the 1st round + a 2 and 4 (or 5) for:
Jarron Gilbert !

TRULY SHOCKING

In a show of tremendous faith in his alma mater. Mike Singletary convinces Scott to trade for pick number one and land: Jason Smith.

by Hella Niners on Mar 25, 2009 11:58 PM PDT reply actions

Actually

that could be intriguing.. think about it, alex smith and our number one to detroit for the number one overall. detroit gets e decent prospect and still has the number ten pick, maybe we throw in a 6 or something to. but that then allows us to draft curry or more likely jason smith, eugene monroe.. and i would love to see alex “flourish” in detroit

are you on crack!? they don’t have matt millen anymore…..very one sided trade…but as a niner fan I would love it. No need to suprise anyone…we are taking andre smith…no doubt about it. We would be very VERY dumb not to.

# 10 Pick?

If one of these will be avaiable.

1.Raji
2.Orakpo
3.Monroe
4.Smith
5.Brown
6.Crabtree
7.Maclin
8.Jenkins
9.Oher
10.Maybin

Just from what I’ve read alone.

Sanchez

I agree taking Sanchez would be the shock of the year, I’d also consider not going for a OT as a shock. There are plenty of good DL in this draft and we could look into picking one up in the 2nd round, plus there is a bigger demand for a OL this year. Teams like StL, DET, CIn, Philly, BAL, Pitts, and OAK need help at OT so having a top 10 pick would call for a Oher or Smith pick

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

by bayboy on Mar 26, 2009 7:35 AM PDT reply actions

The team...

… doesn’t need DL help, per se. They really need a 3-4 OLB. There may be three of the best (potentially) available when they get to pick. So skipping on an OT, especially if they sign M.Smith, isn’t that big of a surprise.

I agree, though, that taking Sanchez (or even Stafford) would surprise the heck out of me. First of all, I don’t think they’re interested at all in taking a QB at #1. Secondly, I can’t believe that there aren’t other teams looking to jump up (even if the 49ers forfeit a little value to pick up an extra pick) and take a QB.

It will be...

………..a surprise!

Mark Sanchez

remember that little rant Singletary had about not coaching jay cutler "he’s a player under contract CAN’T DO IT!!!! (love that he’s funny without trying to be funny) and he also didnt like Mathew Stafford for getting upset about getting asked how his parents divorce. So my point bieng is that if they are looking at quarterbacks all signs point to Mark Sanchez running a run first offense for jimmy raye

Vontae Davis?

This guy sounds like a beast in the making. Vontae and Clements as your CBs sounds pretty good. It’d free another CB to potentially help at FS. He’d get to play with his brother, so maybe they could help eachother chill out a bit. If he’s a workout freak like his brother he could also help set the tone at practice the way Vernon did last weekend.

late surprise pick/ round 6 0r 7

Javorski Lane. Fullback. Texas A&M. If they can get this guy and Singletary can do his thing with him….he’ll be a weapon we haven’t had since Johnny Davis in ’81.

in my own Mock for all 7 rounds i picked him you should go see who i chose, its wild but i’m trying to get peoples opinions

by StevenC on Mar 26, 2009 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Blood Bros! lol

this is my crazy surprise pick lol… what happens is the 49ers end up signing Marvel Smith to a 2-4 year contract from either 8-12 million, and we just signed Wragge for another year, but we lost Strickland… so things are going wild in the matter of what we “really” need. I’m going to save the best for last so the 1st round pick wil be the last thing i say lol. For our 2nd round we are going to pick up OT William Beatty “if he is available” if not we will go with OLB Connor Barwin =) “shoot maybe they’ll both be gone lol”. oh and about the Blood Bros. 1st round pick is going to be CB Vonte Davis “Vernon’s lil bro”.

Crazy, Unlikely, and “would be” Definitely Surprising lol

Shockers

Any of the guys that are going around there in mocks wouldn’t be THAT surprising. Well, if you want to talk a true shocking pick… players who people aren’t even talking about at #10.

Conner Barwin
Josh Freeman (ugh)
Robert Ayers
Clay Matthews
Darrius Heyward-Bey

You know, one of those picks tht makes everybody go, “Ooohhhh what!?”

Kinda like...

… the Dolphin’s pick of Ginn a while back? I guess he hasn’t turned out THAT bad, but he was definitely a head scratcher with Bowe still on the board.

Maclin or Trade

Im hoping Orakpo/ Andre Smith/ BJ Raji/ Oher/ Maybin/ Maclin/ Brown in that order then a trade if these player is not avaible.

Sanchez would be a shocking....

yet dissapointing pick. Shaun Hill is good QB for our system not to mention he is actually winning games for us. Just focus on the OL and Pass Rush among other things, but not QB.

Nightmares

1. Josh Freeman – I’d scream. This is the ultimate worst case scenario, if Stafford and Sanchez are gone. It’d be like the Rocky Horror Picture show. Uncomfortable, weird, gay, and strange.

2. Percy Harvin – Remember Cam Cameron selecting Ted Ginn early (8th overall) with the Dolphins? That’s how I’d feel if Percy was selected at 10.

3. Beanie Wells – I don’t like the Buckeyes, and I don’t like Beanie Wells, and I don’t like the idea of paying a guy more than Gore to compliment Gore.

4. Michael Johnson – I’d fall on the floor and turn purple.

by Andrew Davidson on Mar 26, 2009 5:57 PM PDT reply actions

Harvin == Ginn

That is exactly how I’d feel, too, if the 49ers took ANY of the “top” WRs at #10 except Crabtree.

we have 3 qb's already

we’re not gonna draft one imho

If you had a lineup of 9 Jack Custs who hit(Cust career average) .239 AVG, .382 OBP, and .475 SLG, then your team would score 6.12 runs per game-totalling to 991runs a season. The 08 rangers lead the majors in runs score with 901.

by 9Custs on Mar 26, 2009 8:18 PM PDT reply actions

I think...

… they still can. Huard’s contract is for one year with probably less than a half a million in “guaranteed” money. If the 49ers can take someone that can be molded into the “next Shaun Hill” in any round after the 4th, I think they would definitely do it. And by “next Shaun Hill”, I mean a QB who can be a fairly solid #2.

by sfgfan on Mar 27, 2009 9:50 AM PDT up reply actions

play makers!!!!

We need an explosive playmaker. I think a surprise pick that I would be very happy with is Percy Harvin. Put him in the Slot , put him in as the 3rd down back, maybe even use him in the “Wild Cat”. He would be a nightmare catching screenes out of the backfield. kickoff/punt returns. Playmakers, Playmakers, Playmakers. We need more of them.

How about....

CB Greg Toler of St. Paul’s of Virginia? Although not in the 1st round (or maybe, even as an UFA). I read John Crumpacker’s brief mention of this player on today’s SFGate article. He is 5’11" and 191 lbs. Ran the 40 at 4.35 and has 14 career college interceptions.

Malcolm Jenkins

We need a safety badly. Let’s move down a couple of spots and take a play maker. We have our DE and OL already, great linebakers lets shore up the safety position. Unless a Jason Smith is still available, take Malcolm Jenkins, he is exactly what we need to gety to the next level.
