49ers Performance-based pay players
A few days ago I read something about the results of the NFL's 2008 performance-based pay system. According to the system:
[P]erformance-based pay is computed by using a “player index.” To produce the index, a player’s regular-season playtime (total plays on offense, defense and special teams) is divided by his adjusted regular-season compensation (full-season salary, prorated portion of signing bonus, earned incentives). Each player’s index is then compared to those of the other players on his team to determine the amount of his pay.
They listed the top 25 earners, but there were no 49ers. Well, Mike Sando was kind enough to prove the 49ers top 5 earners. They were:
| Rank | Player | Position | Bonus |
| 1 | Parys Haralson | LB | $241, 274 |
| 2 | Ray McDonald | DE | $192,048 |
| 3 | Josh Morgan | WR | $144,247 |
| 4 | Tarell Brown | CB | $141,423 |
| 5 | J.T. O'Sullivan | QB | $128,164 |
My Internet time is running out (I'm scheduling this post), so the general question is who will be the top earners? Basically we're looking for guys who will not get a ton of playing time, but will be productive in spite of this. Thoughts?

This is sort of like
PER in basketball, where efficiency and per minute stats rule. My top 5 for this next year are:
1. Dominique Ziegler
2. Tarell Brown
3. Kentwan Balmer
4. 1st Round Pick (Whomever it may be)
5. Alex Smith
when will the Kenny Thomas Reign of Terror end?!!??

I don't think...
… a first round pick will qualify for any additional pay. If anything, his salary will be used as one of the cost bases to calculate the players who do get performance based pay.
If I’m not mistaken, which I very well could be, this system is to prevent players who play more (i.e. almost as much as starters) to get paid closer to what the starters are making.

McDonald and Brown
I think McDonald and Brown will probably top out the list again. If the 49ers take a pass rusher in the first and he ends up starting, Haralson will probably be near the top, again.
Another possibility is Dashon Goldson. If he indeed wins the starting job at FS, he will definitely get some additional pay coming his way (considering McDonald isn’t even a starter and he was a third round pick with a higher salary than Goldson).
