TE Vernon Davis – Another offensive coordinator, more renewed talk of maximizing Davis’ athletic ability. It sounds like a running joke, considering Davis hasn’t come close to establishing himself as one of the top 10 tight ends in the league. His scant 1,132 receiving yards in three seasons, combined with the fact that he is a mediocre blocker, make him one of the most overpaid players in the NFL. He’s on the books for $8 million in cap space over the next two seasons, and he’d likely need to double last year’s numbers (358 receiving yards and two touchdowns) to come close to justifying it. And, no, coach Mike Singletary still isn’t a big fan.

Instant Invalidation:

As soon as I read that, I don’t give a flying [site decorum] about this guy’s uninformed opinion.
Blind devotion.

The last statement...
… isn’t any better, either. Singletary has gone on record multiple times that he loves Vernon.
I think Robinson
took into account VD’s ability to block vs. the abilities of a strictly blocking TE ability to block. As in, VD doesn’t do squat in receiving numbers to justify his salary, and isn’t an elite specialist as a purely blocking TE to even justify a roster spot for that kind of pay.
The fact is, the 49ers have one season left to see what VD is made of. His numbers won’t reflect his FA status, his potential will. VD and his agent will be able to rely on many different excuses to explain his inability to explode statistically.
1. Lack of consistency (whether it be the numerous OC or various QBs VD has had chucking him the rock)
2. Lack of opportunities, again, falling upon the OC dilemna and the “Martz doesn’t have a system for TEs”
3. Lack of talent around him.
Basically this season is the season the 49ers find out what VD is worth to the franchise. Regardless of his contract, VD could very well end up as a FA next offseason. If he puts up 40 catches, 500 yards and 4 TDs, its time to cut the cord. Let him go to Miami and flourish with Noodle Arm and Penne (yes, I know its Henne).
Its all up to VD to generate numbers and produce. He’s got the platform with Raye, and he’s got the opportunity with stability around him. Shaun Hill, Frank Gore, and Vernon Davis could be an effective trio, and a lot of that rests on VD’s shoulders.
