Defense v. Offense.

For all intents and purposes, the 49ers need to upgrade in just about every position on both sides of the ball. The only sure things that the team have are the kicker, punter, MLB's (Willis and Spikes), DE Justin Smith, and RB's in Gore and Norris. I agree with some that Shaun Hill should be given all the opportunity to shine as the starting QB since he did an admirable job last season. I have had enough of the "Alex Smith had different coordinators every year" BS because that can be said of the whole offense. Yet, Shaun Hill have shown a much better record as the starting QB of the team.

Most Niners Nation fans think that the team should draft a DL (or a pass rushing OLB) and I agree with that, too. It would be nice to have an Everette Brown, Brian Orakpo, Michael Johnson or an Aaron Maybin available at the 10 spot. Let us hypothetically say that the 49ers announces that Dashon Goldson is going to be the starting FS next season, that could have the team draft an OL (particularly RT) in round two.

In round three, I really believe that the 49ers should invest in a RB. Javon Ringer, Shonn Greene, and Rashad Jennings of Liberty,  may be available. Another player to look out for is Ian Johnson of Boise State. He was under the radar for all of last year but is a good RB. I think that not playing a lot last season actually helped him, preventing him from getting banged up too much.

If the team is going that route in the first three rounds, barring any trades or FA signings, do you think that the team will be set for this coming season, in terms of playing good defense and decent offense? Possibly making the playoffs, too?

The second day of drafting, I believe the team should pick the proverbial "best available athlete" course of action. I really believe that the team is heading the right direction. After all the mess that Terry Donahue (the worst Bill Walsh move) had made, I think the team is now in line to be in the playoffs once again.

No, this is not a mini mock draft. It's an opinion that some of you may agree or disagree with. Thanks for reading this.

If I could pick

I would like to see them address OT or someone for the pass rush. It really depends on who is on the board, but I’m still pulling for Everette Brown. Wouldn’t mind seeing us draft Oher or Smith if they are available either.

I wish...

Michael Johnson or Brown would still be available at 10. If not, a dominant OT would be alright. I just hope that they don’t pull a stunt like when they traded and traded down and ended up with…………. Rashaun Woods! Man, I still have his eTopps card. I can’t get rid of it even for a penny.

michael johnson

You should eBurn your eTopps card of Rashaun Woods. ;)

I don't know...

but Michael Johnson did have a good combine and some coaches are comparing him to Julius Peppers. He has good height for a DE at 6’7" and is lean at 260 lbs. I just hope that the team is left with a good pass rusher.

What will be left?

If we wait until the third round, what will the draft still have in terms of talented RBs? I’m really surprised you don’t hear more about this as the focus has shifted to the running game and Singletary has made it clear he wants Frank to split carries. More importantly, no one seems to know where Thomas Clayton stands? Given what little I’ve seen, I think he could be the other guy in the backfield.

This draft is deep in RBs

though the Knowshon and Beanie top the list and they are definitly arent going to produce like A.D did his Rookie year, there are alot of running backs that are talented enough to spell Gore and be productive.

I like...

Ian Johnson’s makeup as a NFL RB. He could be a sleeper pick in that position.

He had a great combine too

Ian Johnson did.

I’ve said it once, I’ve said it numerous times, and I’m sticking with it: I want Gartrell Johnson in round 5!!!

I am excited for which ever running back the Niners end up drafting, I like a lot of them in this year’s class.

Ian Johnson, a sleeper?

It seems as if Ian Johnson is a old man already and he’s very average.

it’s boring just thinking about Ian Johnson

Hmmmm...

He didn’t play much last season (senior stats: 766 rushing yards on 150 attempts, 22 catches, 229 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns) but he did have a “very average” college career (4,184 rushing yards on 752 attempts and 58 total TD’s). And how about a 40 yard time for a seemingly old man at 4.46? Not too bad, right?

So your saying

that Shaun Hill or any other QB would have done any better in the endless pit that Alex Smith was thrown in, I am a huge Shaun Hill fan but he was/is playing for a completely different team that Smith ever had a shot at. And Dashon Goldson has already been slated in as next years starter. That is why the Niners have already granted Mark Roman the permission to explore trade opportunities. As far as drafting the best remaining player available I believe, but could be wrong that pertains to the first/second round and not late first day and almost second day players(which I mean 4th round and so on). Again I am no G.M. I was always under the understanding that late draft picks were to fill holes and deepen the the depth of teams. But then again I could be way off base.

I guess...

when you are unheralded as Hill is, you tend to get motivated more and become a better player. In Alex Smith’s case, huge guaranteed money, first overall pick, I just didn’t feel the motivation in him. Gore is another example. I bet when Barlow was around, Barlow didn’t regard him as his competition.

Moore

I think if William Moore is there in the 2nd we have to take him….. aaron kelly is my WR sleeper… rashad jennings is the only changeup back to gore of the mentioned… i do not want javon ringer… i just dont have a lot of faith in him at the next level… i could be wrong though

RE: Ringer

I’m with you on that, I feel he’s had too many college carries and he’s already peaked in terms of talent.

RB

Since the 49ers did not sign a RB (or at least yet) they are obviously going to draft one. Even if Thomas Clayton is the #2 they will draft one. A running back should not be addressed until OT and pass rusher are taken care of
