Isaac Bruce returning to 49ers for 2009 season
Barrows (and others) confirmed that Isaac Bruce told Mike Singletary he will be returning for the 2009 season. Even though the younger guys still need to step up next season, it's always good to have an all-time great legend (which I consider Bruce) as a mentor. Especially if the team drafts a receiver in this draft.
The question now is whether the team will still draft a receiver? They've got 6 receivers that played last season and could contribute this year. Is there room for another receiver? Do they get someone to compete with Zeigler? Do they get rid of Battle?

Boo!
Scooped by a whole three minutes!
I’m just kidding Fooch.
wow
I wasn’t expecting this. Welcome back Bruuuuuuce glad you decided to stick around!
Simply by pulling on both ends, Patrick Willis can stretch diamonds back into coal
This is a great luxury for the team. It gives us a legit No.1 receiver for the season and another year to develop and evaluate our younger guys to see if any can really fill that top slot.
Great
I’m really glad he’s coming back. He’s the only legit #1 we have (so far), and at a great price for what he brings to the team in terms of work ethic and leadership. The fact that Josh Morgan likes to ‘pick his brain’ says a ton about Morgan’s future. Awesome.
Throwback unis? Yes. Throwback afros? YES!
49ERS TRADE FOR CUTLER!
Check out the article in the Denver Examiner:

Maybe this inspired Bruce to come back??
Nice spoof
I know something was up when Alex Smith was involved in the trade and re-united with Mike Nolan. Always got watch those subdomain stories!

yeah wow
and frankly the team would be better off with starting wideouts who don’t need to use all the ink from the copier to keep their hair black
what? why wouldn’t he just use hair dye?
Simply by pulling on both ends, Patrick Willis can stretch diamonds back into coal
agreed...
alhough the general sentiment of this statement is accurate:
Bruce’s best days are fading in the side mirror
it’s pretty inane for PFW to intimate that bruce is some obviously deteriorated old-timer ala Jake Taylor in “Major League.” For isntance:
1) 2008 TDs — 7; most since 2002
2) 2008 Longest Reception — 63 yards; longest since 2000
3) 2008 Games Started — 15; most since 2004
The guy clearly has something left in the tank. Maybe his best days are in the side mirror, but he’s certainly not wasted space on the WR corps ala Arnaz Battle for the past (insert number) years.

if this is true
I have mixed feelings. Bruce was pretty good for us last season and I think he’s a great mentor for the young wideouts. But… I think Hill, Morgan, Jones, Battle, and Ziegler is a good group and if Bruce had retired it would have forced the NIners hand to give the young guys a lot of playing time. I want to see a lot of Morgan and Hill this year and I hope it still happens. But yeah I’m happy to have Bruce back – he’s consistent and still knows how to find the end zone.
Still defending Rich Aurilia, and the Niners' classic unis
Darn April Fools!
I HOPE this is true! Bruce is a true player, and a class act, thats the type of player I want on our team, and most definitely the best type of guy to mentor our group of young receivers. Please be true. Bruuuuuuce!
There's only 1 reason a vet thats accomplish everything(whos name isn't jerry rice)
returns for another season. He thinks we can compete to be a playoff contender

Not really true.
He could just be itching to play.
He could just want some more money

Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

I've always wondered...
Are teams still on the hook for the remaining signing bonus money if a player retires?
If not, does the player have to pay it back, as it is paid up front, right?
Other than winning, money and itching.
Maybe this is why:
91 career TDs
14944 career receiving yards.
Obviously Bruce will get 56 yards receiving, but can he get 9 TDs and hit that 100 TD milestone too?
Here’s hoping so.
I think Bruce is returning for a number of reasons, and the passion to play football being the number one reason.

I'd still take Crabtree if he is still available....
that is if the 9ers don’t trade the pick to Denver (hint hint).
Fans stuck in the 80's are lame. Respect the past, live in the now.
I'm happy
Bruce returning is another first in a while. I’m surprised no one mentioned it yet, but Bruce is the first newly acquired WR (via trade or signing in the last 4 seasons) that has made it past year one of his tenure. Antonio Bryant gone after 1, ditto for DJax and Bryant Johnson. Bruce continues to set milestones and the season hasn’t even begun.
a good trade possibility
What do you think of trading Vernon Davis (who has implied that there may be better locations for him anyways), Alex Smith, Arnaz Battle and next year’s 1st rounder to Denver for Cutler and Tony Scheffler? I feel like Shaun Hill could still be utilized to some degree, and would be a more than qualified backup for the 49ers. Cutler is used to a much different system, but I feel like he would make defenses account for him, and throw off their strategy, while then pounding the ball inside with Gore (using Clayton as more of a featured #2 back). I guess this is idealistic, and the 49ers are not known for making my ideal dreams come true. But with Cutler we’d have a proven star, Bruce is back, and we could draft Maclin as well with #10. What do you think of a starting three WR set as Morgan, Maclin, and Bruce??? With Cutler throwing to them? And Gore? And a better offensive line? And no whiny VD? I like our chances a LOT this way….. too bad McCloughan doesnt read these posts
Not going to happen.
What would Denver want with two (so far) useless former first round picks, and a WR whose best suited as a slot WR (and whose contract is up at the end of the year?
Okay, maybe they could use them, but not in exchange for their top QB and top TE.
revised trade proposal
This year’s 1st round (10th overall), next year’s first round (optimistically 32nd overall), Alex Smith as a solid backup with a chance to start over with a clean slate in a new location, VD who has talent but not consistency but could take a much more useful role in McDaniels’ system, and Arnaz Battle. They could also throw in Mark Roman, and then hope to draft another safety to play behind Goldson. Arnaz would serve as a nice 4th or 5th WR that still has some gas in the tank. I think this may be the most the 49ers could offer….
A little closer...
… but I don’t think Alex Smith or Davis add very much value to Denver. Basically, Davis is worth a lot more to the 49ers than any other team in the league. If he’s just going to be a “throw in” in a trade, which he basically will be in any trade between the 49ers and Broncos, I’d rather the 49ers keep him.
Basically, if that were the proposal made to the Broncos, they’d see it as two first round picks and tons of roster fodder. A team offering two firsts and a second could easily outmatch that offer.

How about Alex Smith and our 4th round pick for 2009 for Cutler?
I can not see giving up two first round picks for Cutler. He is not going to play for Denver and so Denver has to trade him. But on the other hand.. next year is a good year to draft a QB
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
Denver has to trade him...
… yes. In most “normal” trade situations, the buyer holds the power, as most of the time, the player being traded has more years on him or isn’t as good as he believes he is.
Cutler, on the other hand, is a VERY young QB who has already shown he’s a Pro Bowl QB for a losing team. Imagine him on a team that actually has some sort of a defense and a running game. The 49ers will be only one of probably almost 10 teams (at least) inquiring about Cutler. Two first rounders is a very real possibility.
I like it, but
would Denver? I mean that’s literally pulling down Denver’s pants, turning them around, and backing the entire Golden Gate bridge into their rear ends.
I mentioned the VD for Scheffler trade a few weeks ago, and was assualted.
I don’t think Nolan would advise McDaniels to trade for Smith, but McDaniels could say “look what I did with Cassel”.
I’d also rather the team trade this year’s first rounder, as opposed to next years. After all, the team could crap the bed and end up with another top 10 selection anyway. That and that there is no one at 10 that we are guaranteed to get, or take if available.
by Andrew Davidson on Apr 1, 2009 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions
This year's first,
next year’s first and 3rd. That is what you pay for a franchised or RFA player, and that is exactly what Cutler is worth. That’s what the Vikings paid for Jared Allen and the guy made their defense a freaking death machine.
Bruce is welcomed back
Since the season ended, Bruce has been in limbo on his decision on returning to yet another NFL season. Being a future hall of famer, I dont blame him for that, nor would the team. his value is gonna lie in the locker room where he’ll get to mentor the youngster. He will not be the number 1 reciever imo. The youth movement the organization is going will limit his playing time to more of a #2 or #3 reciever. Which should be fine with him, dont wanna be a Marvin Harrison and drop your repuatation because of age concerns.
Welcome back Bruce!
CUT
arnaz battle, thank you for being the only reciever trying but we have to go different paths, hope raiders will pick you up
why not package battle and roman
trade him to the Raiders for Fargas?

Competition
It is great that he is back. Obviously he will be starting. Him returning makes the other WRs have to work harder to get playing time. And as a mentor he can help all the others more.
In a way, I'd hoped he would retire.
I love him, and he was great last year…
But I can’t help but feel like Morgan, Hill and Brandon Jones would have been a lot better off without him.
Nah
you need that guy to show the youngsters what’s up. He will be used properly, as he was last year. This is excellent for the other WRs, and may finally facilitate Arnaz being shown the door. He should never ever be a starter for an NFL team.
I love Bruce
this and Marvel Smith’s signing make the number 10 pick completely expendable. We don’t need a big-time tackle, and we now don’t need a WR anywhere in the draft. Morgan, Hill, and Jones are going to be fine for years to come and Bruce will be EXCELLENT for this year. Absolutely great news.
YES!
One of the only positives from many of last year’s game day threads has returned!
