2009 NFL Schedule Release: San Francisco 49ers Official Schedule

Here we go.  Time to start breaking down the 49ers 2009 schedule.  I'll have my own breakdown in the coming days.  For now I just wanted to get the schedule up.  Feel free to pick it apart.  All times EASTERN

Week 1: @ Arizona Cardinals - Sunday September 13, 4:15pm FOX

Week 2: vs. Seattle Seahawks - Sunday September 20, 4:05pm FOX

Week 3: @ Minnesota Vikings - Sunday September 27, 1:00pm FOX

Week 4: vs. St. Louis Rams - Sunday October 4, 4:15pm FOX

Week 5:vs. Atlanta Falcons - Sunday October 11, 4:05pm FOX

Week 6: BYE

Week 7: @ Houston Texans - Sunday October 25 1:00pm FOX

Week 8: @ Indianapolis Colts - Sunday November 1, 1:00pm FOX

Week 9: vs. Tennessee Titans - Sunday November 8, 4:15pm CBS

Week 10: vs. Chicago Bears - Thursday November 12, 8:20pm NFLN

Week 11: @ Green Bay Packers - Sunday November 22, 1:00pm FOX

Week 12: vs. Jacksonville Jaguars - Sunday November 29, 4:05pm CBS

Week 13: @ Seattle Seahawks - Sunday December 6, 4:15pm FOX

Week 14: vs. Arizona Cardinals - Monday December 14, 8:30pm ESPN

Week 15: @ Philadelphia Eagles - Sunday December 20, 1:00pm FOX

Week 16: vs. Detroit Lions - Sunday December 27, 4:05pm FOX

Week 17: @ St. Louis Rams - Sunday January 3, 1:00pm FOX

There you have it.  A pair of prime time appearances, which is pretty cool.  We get the Seahawks and Cardinals back to back to start the season and in early December.  Those could be monstrous games.  Plenty more to come.

Apparently...

… someone in the NFL front office scheduling group thinks the 49ers-Cardinals rivalry is growing.

I was in the middle...

of typing the exact same thing when your comment posted! Looks like we have quite the Monday Night Rivalry going here! Lets hope for different results…

That's what she said.

Agreed

All I know is that with 2 back to back sets of home games there are no excuses for losing. If they can’t do better than 500 then fire everybody including Mcloughan.

Fans stuck in the 80's are lame. Respect the past, live in the now.

So 6 offensive coordinators in 6 years?

by bignerd on Apr 14, 2009 7:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think...

… Maiocco pointed out that the team is on it’s 7th in seven years (dating back to post-Mooch). So 8 out of 8!

by sfgfan on Apr 15, 2009 8:46 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kind of sucks...

… that the second Rams game is at the end of the season. It’d be nice if that game were four weeks or so earlier, kind of providing a moral boost for the team (of course I’m making the assumption the 49ers sweep the Rams series this year).

by sfgfan on Apr 14, 2009 4:17 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

End of year

At the same time though, it puts us in position for an almost sure bet 2 game winning streak to end the season. Ending with the Lions and Rams could put us in position for a late charge.

I’m pissed too though. I go to school in St. Louis and this will be two straight years that the niners have played here while I am back home in San Francisco. I think I’ll have to make the four hour drive to Indy.

Not a fan of...

the Thursday night game after having the Bears on Sunday. You know that the players will come out of that game with some bruises.

I have a friend with season tickets on the 50-yard-line

He knows nothing about football and I’ve been out of the country for a few years so I don’t know much any more either. He gets to choose two games, the others are split with his siblings. Which two games should I suggest he choose (as I’ll be one of his guests) – the entirely winnable games like St. Louis or Seattle, or something a bit more fun like Tennessee or Chicago? The MNF and Thursday night games are out because I’ve got two little girls.

Noonan. Nooooonan!

Nothing...

… tops kickoff weekend. I’d go with the Cardinals opening week for sure.

by sfgfan on Apr 14, 2009 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow.

That was a big brain fart on my part. My fault.

In that case, I’d go with the Falcons game, as I’d be intrigued to see Ryan in person.

by sfgfan on Apr 14, 2009 4:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

My recommendation

I’d go with the game against the Cutler-led Chicago Bears just so that I could make a Stoolies sign. Yeah, I’m still bitter about Tampergate last year.

Throwback unis? Yes. Throwback afros? YES!

by grantmp on Apr 14, 2009 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've kind of gotten over it...

… but it’s somewhat messed up that the Redskins haven’t been penalized yet. If the Haynesworth reports before free agency started are to be believed, the Redskins’ evidence is probably even more damning than whatever they had against the 49ers.

Bears and Falcons

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

It’s brutal after the bye week.

Yeah, but

At least the schedulers threw the team a bone with the last couple of games—just in time for the late-season push. The team has finished well the last couple of years…

Throwback unis? Yes. Throwback afros? YES!

I'd...

… be ecstatic with a 4-1 record going into the bye.

Week 4: vs. St. Louis Rams – Win (self explanatory)

Week 5:vs. Atlanta Falcons – Win(close win, but we can take the falcons)

Week 6: BYE

Week 7: @ Houston Texans – Win(close game)

Week 8: @ Indianapolis Colts – Loss(Peyton’s too good)

Week 9: vs. Tennessee Titans – Loss(Great Defense, close loss)

Week 10: vs. Chicago Bears – Win(Destroy the Bears)

Week 11: @ Green Bay Packers – Loss(10 am start doesnt fit with us)

Week 13: @ Seattle Seahawks – Win (see first explanation)

Week 14: vs. Arizona Cardinals – Win(we can take the cardinals)

Week 15: @ Philadelphia Eagles – Loss(ew, short week, 10 am start, bad formula)

Week 16: vs. Detroit Lions – Win(haha the lions)

Week 17: @ St. Louis Rams – Win(see first explanation

11-5…to overly optimistic? or i have faith this year, i can gurantee though that we will go 6-0 in the NFC West

by Dub4lif3 on Apr 14, 2009 4:23 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

10-6 more likely, maybe even 9-7.

You have to think that either Cards or/and Seattle will split.

Optimistic?

Yeah, probably. 6-0 in the NFC West sounds a bit too good to be true—not that I’m not hoping.

Throwback unis? Yes. Throwback afros? YES!

by grantmp on Apr 14, 2009 4:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

6-0...

… in the west is a bit optimistic. This is especially true if no pass rush shows up for the Cardinals games and old-man Warner has all day to throw.

by sfgfan on Apr 14, 2009 4:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

if we wanna be legit

we have to take care of this division no doubt about it, and we cant always think aw we can’t beat them

by Dub4lif3 on Apr 14, 2009 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So...

… are these predictions? Or are you trying to dictate the mood here?

by sfgfan on Apr 14, 2009 4:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sounds Great to ME...

I like 11-5, but don’t write them off on tough teams, even in the past years when they have showed up to play, they have beat tough teams. I have no doubt they can spank a few of those tough teams, and then we will choke a couple division games. All I have to say is that if they don’t make the playoffs this year, I quit. I don’t see how you can go into the season as a mediocre team and not come out with a winning record here. If we don’t make the playoffs this year, I say all us fans throw our pennies together and force the Yorks out of town, and fire EVERYBODY!!!

Oh, and as far and Peterson goes dude, don’t forget what happened the last time we played him. Can you say… Shut Down?

We could be the Cardinals. They aren’t that good. Stop Warner and you get the win. And seahawks they suck. Also they don’t have Julian Peterson. Bears? Cutler might win that one for us. Their is getting older and worse. And they have no WRs. Packers? They have no D. They don’t have much of a run game either. Oh and Falcons, no D either. Stop Turner and you can win that game

49ers WILL make the playoffs this year.

by iaalexeeff on Apr 14, 2009 6:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rebuttal points

- The Cards aren’t that good? They went to the superbowl last year and would have won it if not for a 100 yard interception return and a back of the endzone catch at the very end of the game.
- Julian Peterson is one player. The Seahawks struggled last year because of a ridiculous number of injuries. They will probably be better this year (although I admit they’ll miss Holmgren)
- “Cutler might win that one for us” What? The Bears were solid last year, going 9-7 with a mediocre Orton at the helm. Cutler is an improvement and should definitely help them. Their defense is aging, but still includes Tommie Harris, Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, Charles Tillman and Adewale Ogunleye. They improved their line by adding Pace. And they still have the best return man in the game. These guys will be no pushovers, especially if they can add a receiver with their second round pick.
- The Packers are always tough at home and have a 4 of the first 83 picks to revamp their D.
- The Falcons are another good team. They went 11-5 last year with a rookie QB that will only be better this year.
- Finally, lets not forget that we’re not that good yet either.

eh

I thought the NFL was going to try and do-away with the games that would start at 10am PT on the east coast? Instead, we finish the season at St. Louis 1PM ET… Indi 1pm ET, PHILLY 1pm ET …

I know they made an effort to limit East coast teams having to travel out west multiple times.. why doesnt the NFL show the West Coast teams the same bais/courtesy?

by bonbrillio on Apr 14, 2009 4:43 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I am with you

I live on the east coast now, and it is far more brutal traveling to the east than it is to the west. You actually get a little boost coming west. Traveling to the east F***s your world up for a few days.

1st game with Arizona again?

It seems that we started with them for the last 5 season. It’s getting old! I need a warm up with another than them. Hate to be behind the 8 ball if we’re not ready. Not a divison team again.

by LASVEGASNINER on Apr 14, 2009 4:46 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

You'd rather open the season with...

a boring game against St. Louis?
a rough road game in Green Bay?
a sleep-inducing visit from the Lions?
a bruising trip to Chicago or Minnesota?

I don’t see why you would be opposed to opening the season with a close game against a division rival – and the team that will very likely be the biggest obstacle to the playoffs. Also, you somehow seem to be forgetting that our openers against Arizona the last couple years have all been exciting games for both the fans and the players.

Why would you want anything else?

by shlecko on Apr 15, 2009 4:33 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

toughest portion of the schedule...

two straight road games against tough AFC South teams. Then back home to face a tough Titans defense at home. Then there’s only four days before the 49ers get a tough Bears defense. This four game stretch will be the true tough test for the team

That's why.....

I don’t predict these things because anything can happen…..although on the ironic side I did predict they’d go 7-9 again….I think if there’s going to be any big guess it’s probably a lot safer to say they’re going 9-7 or even 10-6…..they might tie with Arizona on the best record for NFC West, but I’d like to think optimistically, so what do I know right? LOL!!

5 games played at 10am local time is pretty much bullsh*t.

Meanwhile, the Patriots won’t even have to fly out to the west coast more than once in the same year?

by shlecko on Apr 14, 2009 6:37 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

My two cents: 6-9-1

Week 1: @ Arizona Cardinals – Loss (Found their identity in playoffs)

Week 2: vs. Seattle Seahawks – Win(many seahawks back from injury, but we should be able to take them at home)

Week 3: @ Minnesota Vikings – Tie (Tough to win on the road against a good team, but this one might be close so I’m predicting the tie. That’s right, I’m predicting a tie!)

Week 4: vs. St. Louis Rams – Win (their terrible)

Week 5:vs. Atlanta Falcons – Loss(quality team with an improving qb)

Week 6: BYE

Week 7: @ Houston Texans – Win(we can take these guys)

Week 8: @ Indianapolis Colts – Loss(we’re not there yet)

Week 9: vs. Tennessee Titans – Loss(double digit defeat)

Week 10: vs. Chicago Bears – Loss (Bears should be good with Cutler in the fold)

Week 11: @ Green Bay Packers – Loss(tough to win in GB)

Week 12: vs. Jacksonville Jaguars – Win(agree that are not Jags in a good place right now)

Week 13: @ Seattle Seahawks – Loss (tough to win in the kingdome)

Week 14: vs. Arizona Cardinals – Loss (see above)

Week 15: @ Philadelphia Eagles – Loss (again, good team on the road)

Week 16: vs. Detroit Lions – Win(awful team)

Week 17: @ St. Louis Rams – Win(awful team)

by kiyoshi on Apr 14, 2009 6:50 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

5-11? yikes

I hate to say it but I’m afraid you could easily be right…..we could easily even lose that Jags or Texans game too. I think yours is a bit of a “worst case” but I can’t see us winning more than 9 this season.

My point was that its very loud there, which disrupts play calling and makes winning a close game difficult. Besides I can never remember the names of the fields anymore with all the corporate sponsors.

I'm saying 9-7

and we might seek into the playoff too.

by warriorfan4life on Apr 14, 2009 7:16 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The NFL is so unpredictable though...

Just remember that home field was not much of an advantage for teams last year and crazy things happen all the time in football. I think we lose a couple of the “winnable” games against average teams (ie. @Houston, vs. Atlanta), and steal a victory or two against superior opponents. (ie. @Minny, vs. Tenn). I think if the Niners can have a good draft and get standard improvement from their young players there are 9 wins to be had in that schedule.

4 things jump out at me from the schedule

1) this is the same trajectory as last year…all the “as of right now” easy games are bunched together and all the “as of right now” hard games are bunched together. if the teams on the schedule end up being as good or bad as they seem right now, 2009 could be another season of winning and losing streaks. you know, the 49er yo-yo act.

2) there’s only 1 road game in the eastern time zone with a 10 am PST start. given that the niners have been awful in these games since nolan took over, that’s a good sign for the road record.

3) as thefaithful points out, it’s awfully nice to have DET and STL as your last 2 games when you’re (theoretically as of right now) trying to make the playoffs.

4) as of right now, the season comes down to week 14 vs. ARI on monday night football. a niner win means the division title and the playoffs. a niner loss means adios to the postseason…again.

by Florida Danny on Apr 14, 2009 10:00 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

wait...i meant 5

5) there’s not a single road game within 1000 miles of me. :-(

You never know

Some teams may fall apart. If Kurt Warner got hurt for the whole season we would get 2 free wins. Leinart? hahaha. I hope we just play good football. I love wins but even a loss in a good game isn’t that bad. Also someone could emerge as a superstar.

49ers WILL make the playoffs this year.

I've got us at 6-10....

But the NFL is strange and teams fall off and come out of nowhere every year…I’m just hoping that we’re one of the latter.

Cold Games On the Road

Brrrrrrr….
Just like Buffalo last here, where we prevailed, we’ve got a couple of toughies in the cold this year in late Nov. and Dec. nonetheless too. Lambeau and hostile Philly. That is tough. The optimist in me says at least a split with these two games. The realist says ouch. 0-2.
