Why Not Tyson Jackson
I was thinking today, reading through a lot of mock drafts, about Tyson Jackson. He's touted as the best pure 3-4 end in the draft and is most often slated to fall somwhere between picks 12-16 to the Broncos, Texans and Chargers. considering that the Niners are picking only 2 slots ahead of Denver and DE is arguably a need I was kind of surprised when I realized I haven't, in all of the pre-draft coverage, heard Jackson's name attached to the Niners even once. If we drafted him presumably we'd put him at LE and slide Balmer and/or Sopoaga over to NT meaning that next year either Sopoaga, Franklin or Evans' job would be in jeopardy. That doesn't seem to bad to me...
I know next to nothing about this kid though, would he be a good fit? Any LSU fans want to chime in? Anyone have a theory why the Niners wouldn't take him besides DL numbers?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Is it just because he's not one of the top "needs" players?
Does this matter if he’s the best player on the board at 10? Or 2nd or 3rd but the other players aren’t needs either?

we picked oher in the mock draft
thats a straight need pick for a guy who is ranked on everyones board somewhere around 18-20…
I dont know enough about jackson to know if he is good enough, but he seems to be on a lot of mocks at 12 for denver, so he cant be THAT much of a reach

Because he isn't as exciting as the other names.

No more Defensive Ends
We’ve put a lot into DEs the past couple years. We gave a big deal to Justin Smith, who’s awesome. We used a first round pick on Balmer, who so far we don’t know too much about but he could still become quite good. We just signed Demetric Evans to a nice little deal and told him he’ll compete for the starting job… how much more should we really invest in DEs when they’re not even the passrushers in a 3-4 defense? I say no more DEs in the draft unless there’s a steal late in the draft.

Re:
Not trying to be an [site decorum]. But this would have been a better comment here.
Otherwise I would comment on the draft, but like you I know next to nothing about this
kid, much less any of the other kids. So rather than open a new post about some guy you know virtually nothing about, why not post it in Fooch’s main post to keep things somewhat organized. And you could continue the convo over there and free things up in the fanpost section for more gems like this .

Maybe so..
But with the Orakpo Scouting Report on the front page.. the rules seem to have changed.

scouting reports
During draft season I do more detailed scouting reports on specific pages. If you do a search for “niners nation scouting report” in the search engine for the site (http://www.ninersnation.com/search), you’ll see some previous ones.
For some of these I look at what people discuss in the FanPosts and if one particular player is getting a lot of chatter, I’ll pull it out and give it a more thorough review. Orakpo was getting a lot of chatter, so I brought it up. And also, I used it as a way to generate discussion on playing time for a drafted OLB with Lawson and Haralson in the starting lineup. So it gives even more value to posting in the Official FanPost.

better still...
to just do what Fooch says and not what he does…I mean within reason of course we aren’t mindless sheep, well, most of us aren’t, well, nevermind…

I waffled back and forth about that
but last I checked nobody had posted anything there in 4 days so I went with the fresher option

It would be a sign
of giving up on Balmer, and it’s a little too early. I do think he would be a great addition, but not an option because we drafted Balmer last year and we added Evans in FA.

Basically
Justin Smith and Kentwan Balmer are the two reasons the Niners won’t draft Tyson Jackson with the #10 pick.
Interestingly enough, my copy of Sporting News had a mock draft that had the Niners taking Sanchez, I’m starting to think this is just a draft slot selection and although I’ve been critical of people tooting the “Trade down” horn I do believe that if Sanchez makes it to the Niners’ pick there’s probably an 95% chance the Niners take Sancez or trade down (If Washington really wants him I’d imagine they’d be more than willing to move up a couple spots, ahead of Denver to get him), and Denver taking Tyson Jackson at #43, or there abouts, overall. In that case I could see the Niners using their 2nd round pick on him.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

I'm pretty sure...
… I would much rather them take Sanchez and fail to trade him than to take Oher/A.Smith.

i saw denver taking jackson at 12 in a few mocks.. i dont think a pure DE in a 3-4 set
will last that long

I could see Denver taking him at 12
The Broncos have like zero 3-4 DL. I was just wonder what Sporting News was smoking when they had him going to the Broncos in the 2nd Round.

Speaking of 3-4 DE's
I’m beginning to believe B.J. Raji might be the best 3-4 DE in the draft if he doesn’t fit at NT.
Rays in '08.... Desmond Jennings - the breakout continues.....

That's what you'd call...
… a monster DE.
