What does YOUR big board look like?
We've all spent time playing guessing games about where players are going to end up in the top 10 picks and which team is going to trade up for Sanchez, but at the end of the day we're guessing what those teams would do with their picks.
For the purposes of this thread, throw the draft order out of the window and imagine you are on the clock at #1. Taking nothing into consideration but a prospect's talent, projectability, NFL readiness, and productivity.... what does the top 25 of your big board look like? This should be your best players available regardless of defensive scheme or team needs.
I'll kick things off with mine:
1 OLB Aaron Curry Wake Forest
2 OT Jason Smith Baylor
3 OT Andre Smith Alabama
4 WR Michael Crabtree Texas Tech
5 OT Eugene Monroe Virginia
6 DT B.J. Raji Boston College
7 CB Michael Jenkins Ohio State
8 DE Brian Orakpo Texas
9 DE Everette Brown Florida State
10 QB Mark Sanchez USC
11 DE Tyson Jackson LSU
12 WR Percy Harvin Florida
13 RB Knowshon Moreno Georgia
14 RB Chris Wells Ohio State
15 OT Michael Oher Mississippi
16 QB Matthew Stafford Georgia
17 WR Darrius Heyward-Bey Maryland
18 WR Jeremy Maclin Missouri
19 CB Sean Smith Utah
20 DT Peria Jerry Mississippi
21 DE Aaron Maybin Penn State
22 MLB Rey Maualuga USC
23 DT Evander Hood Missouri
24 TE Brandon Pettigrew Oklahoma State
25 C Alex Mack California

QBs
Can you explain why you rank the QBs as you do? Also, with Andre Smith, is that not factoring any off the field or character issues?
by Fooch on Apr 23, 2009 9:48 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
QB's
Matthew Stafford’s decision making and accuracy aren’t much better than Freeman’s. Watch the gamefilm on Stafford and you’ll see a QB who progresses too slowly through his reads, doesn’t lead his receivers accurately, and relies on arm strength to make up for bad timing. He’s a good prospect because he has the athleticism and arm strength, but there’s no way he’s going to contribute in 2009/10.
Meanwhile, Sanchez is obviously a better QB right now when you look at the games. He’s only a fit in a West Coast offense, but he has enough arm strength for intermediate passes and accurately leads his WR’s deep. His awareness in the pocket is superior to Stafford’s and he throws well on the run while keeping his head up and continuing to read defenses. I still don’t consider him a top 5 prospect though because his offense masked his weaknesses at USC. He consistently took advantage of play action which led to checkdowns to HB/FB’s which are the real reason his completion percentage is so high. He’s accurate when his WR are wide open, but I rarely saw him complete a pass when he needed to throw through a narrow window (which Stafford can do).
I saw a ton of Matt Ryan’s games in 2007 and he simply had it all. Neither of these QB’s have the play making ability nor combination of arm strength and accuracy that Ryan had. They both should have returned to college, but probably decided to come out because of the depth of the 2010 QB class.

As for Andre Smith
Correct, I’m not factoring in perceived off the field issues aside from conditioning and legal problems. Personally, I find most of these reports of kid’s character, work ethic, and attitude to be laughable. Smith is obviously not the sharpest tool in the shed and needs professional training, but he wouldn’t be this great of a player if he didn’t have work ethic. The bottom line is that when you watch his film next to someone like Oher, the on-field production and results aren’t even close. Andre Smith plays like a man and goes out to dominate the opposition while Oher plays like someone larger than the competition. These guys aren’t going to be that much larger than the NFL competition and playing patty-cake with long arms against elite DE/OLB will get your QB smacked.
Based on pure talent, I’d have Andre Smith #1 ahead of Curry. Conditioning concerns and general intelligence moved him down.
Watch these highlights and tell me which player you would rather have protecting your blindside.

Pretty similar on Youtube
The difference is consistency (edge Smith) and push in the run game (edge Smith).
Throwback unis? Yes. Throwback afros? YES!

finishing blocks
If you get a chance, watch again and count how many blocks Smith finishes (either pancaked or thrown) versus Oher. Oher has the better technique and footwork against speed rushers, but he fails to finish blocks. Keeping rushers at bay in college is a different thing IMO than in the NFL. The way Smith finishes blocks in both the run game and against inside rushers is what separates him on film from Oher and Monroe.
On the other end of the spectrum, when you watch film of Jason Smith it’s obvious why he’s the #1 tackle on a lot of boards. He consistently gets to the 2nd level in run blocking and is quicker to the outside in pass blocking than any of the other tackles.

great post
Questions aside I like the post idea…nice to develop a big board. I’ll see what I can come up with.

i like that list
I like Donald Brown a lot as a complimentary back and think Britt could end up being special.
I’ve moved Maclin down my list almost weekly though. The vast majority of his production at Missouri was on screens and quick slants and I can’t see him as anything more than a slot receiver at this point. He could be a great slot receiver, but some of the other WR’s in this class are potential #1 wide outs. He’s going to be an impact returner from day one though.

If wes welker was in this draft (and you knew his production)
would you put him number 11 on your big board?
this is just hypothetical of course, just posing a question if you got a TOP flight slot WR
by GreatOden'sRaven on Apr 24, 2009 10:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
wes welker
Unless Wes Welker is in the right offense, he’s just an above-average slot WR NOT top flight.
He’s still a “system WR” in the NFL. The Patriots run a dink and dunk, quick hit, and screen happy offense. The only thing that has changed is getting Randy Moss and seeing their QB’s simply throw it up in the air every 4-5 attempts.
Wes Welker would not be #11 on the board. I think Maclin has more upside than Welker, but he doesn’t have the strength to handle physical CB’s at the line and needs to be drafted into the right system that doesn’t expect him to simply run past CB’s out wide (which won’t happen in the NFL). There are other WR’s in this class who can be #1/2 guys in any offense.

also i tend to put guys who were "workout warriors" lower on my list
i believe in production over combine stats. i know stats play an important part, but a football player is a football player

Now I see a problem
No matter how the draft goes in the first round. Out of 100 people on this blog there will be probably 150 different versions of “How can they draft him at that point?”. Since everyone has the players valued differently I really doubt that McC and Sing will be able to have a good draft, at least per our likes and dislikes.

I think if we come out with at least 3 starting players
I will be satisfied, but I will be happy if one of them becomes a star on our team (maybe not a probowler) but at least a star on the team. With a top 10 pick you cant just get “a guy” you need to get “THE guy”
by GreatOden'sRaven on Apr 24, 2009 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
what I read here is people saying they want the niners to draft this guy or that guy but the niners are going to go for the BPA which means that if Brown, Raji, Maclin and Orakpo all were there at 10 then it is up to how they rated each one. One could say how could they draft Maclin there when they really needed a OLB? Or another will come up with, they need a NT how could they take Brown there.
I will be happy if they take any of the guys list in the original top 11 and even a couple below there.

don't agree with that
Value can be relative and as long as they are taking players that fall into the relative range of BPA, then I don’t see how we’ll consider the draft a failure.
This exercise is really about when a pick comes up like #43 and there’s a guy who most of us have rated as the 24th/25th best player available. Obviously, we would all be disappointed if that player was passed on in the 2nd round given the value.
If we see them take a player (I use Oher as an example) who isn’t in the top 10 on most people’s lists, then that’s a reach pick and it deserves criticism from those who don’t value Oher that high (most don’t).

True, but, what if they have Oher rated higher than we do. Or Maclin or Maualuga?
This whole thing is going to go on their board not ours although I have to agree that we are probably pretty close for most players.

that's my point
If the vast majority of us fans don’t have a player rated high and then they select them, then that’s a pick that will get scrutinized. It’s just nice to put a number behind that argument because regardless of this exercise there will be those who disagree with the pick.
It helps put context around the agreement/disagreement that will inevitably follow the 49ers selection tomorrow.
