With the Tenth pick of the NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've waited until the name is picked because I just didn't want to jinx it. I've taken three semesters of law school finals and waiting for that pick left me more on edge than any of those finals. You better believe the 49ers selected Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech.
Most of us would agree that wide receiver was not the #1 position of need coming into this draft. However, thanks to grand Raider overlord Al Davis, a great talent fell to the 49ers. Scot McCloughan has stated he's a best player available guy, and Michael Crabtree was HANDS DOWN Best Player Available.
There are certainly some questions to be addressed in regards to Crabtree, but I don't think it's sufficient to leave us disappointed with this pick. After the jump, enjoy a couple highlight videos of the newest San Francisco 49er, Michael Crabtree!

So, the next question is..
which direction do the Niners go in the second round? I think most people thought OT, and pass rusher would go in some order in the first two rounds. Now that we lucked into Crabtree there is still two needs in the second round.
I think it will be a pass rusher like Larry English or Connor Barwin, there will be better value in pass rusher than OT at the next pick.
either pass rush or OT
could be either one depending on who’s on the board

being totally ignorant about college football...

Agree
I’m not totally ignorant about college football or anything, but I didnt watch TT very much, but the stuff that I watched was impressive, he wasnt just a long field, one hit and your down kind of player, he’s got some great balance, and hes a tough runner who makes plays.
I mean, some people are pretty excited about him right? Haha, sarcasm to the max!

if we were 4-3 we’d take orakpo no doubt….so what do we do with all the receivers we have now? signing of brandan jones was pointless…absolutely pointless. i say we trade up for an OT or OLB in the first round
Bad move.
OT and OLB’s will exist at the top of the second (especially OLBs). Especially considering the way guys like Everett Brown and Sintim and such getting pushed down by the unpredictable picks at the top.
This is not to say...
… Brown and Sintim will be there in the second, necessarily, but them getting pushed further into the first allows others to still be there in the second.

… has as much time around football as many of the other front office guys in this league. The only difference, I think, between him and other front-office guys is that his time around football hasn’t been 100% hands-on. But that, probably, had to do with his age.
He seems to remind me of his uncle. And Uncle Eddy did pretty good for the 49ers

I've always thought...
… Ayers was going to be a 3-4 DE, not OLB.
On the show they’re saying OLB. He’s small for DE in the 3-4. I honestly think he’d be a really good strongside DE in a 4-3, but he is not an explosive player.

The KNBR crew set him up for a 3rd person answer and he went straight to the first person. I think that’s a good sign. Maybe still a diva WR, but not right off the bat!
Diva
Maybe people are misconstruing confidence for “divaness.” You can’t help but have some confidence (or a lot of) when you’re as accomplished as he was in the college game. He sounds like a great student of the game and he actually loves to play. I think his confidence shouldn’t be a big problem.
lt also doesn't hurt...

Losers . . . TE!?!?!? That’s an awful pick. He will do nothing to aid Stafford from getting killed.
Pettigrew is a great receiving tight end. He’ll give Stafford a monstrous target to whom he may either dump off if he’s under pressure, or find running up a seam.

As some have mentioned his foot injury caused him to slide, but more than anything, Tyson Jackson going 3rd to the Chiefs, caused a snowball of reactions. Aaron Curry became availible to the Seahawks, who would’ve taken a OT otherwise, and Al Davis taking Darius Heyward-Bey instead of Eugene Monroe, who JAX took a pick later.

Woohoo!!!!!!
While I am generally not a fan of drafting receivers in the first round, with Crabtree amazingly falling this far the Niners HAD to take him. What I like in particular is that he’s not known for his speed but for his route running and great hands (does that remind you of any other past 49ers receivers?). In the NFL, that’s way more important because the defenders are often just as fast.

Yes!!!
Watching my phone while out, didn’t want to jinx the team somehow by watching it live.Couldn’t believe that Jacksonville passed and then the Raiders…ok stunned is more like it.Thought sure he would then go 9th….waited.NO!!!…Niners on the clock and since Crabtree was suppose to be gone we would pick Maclin,Oher,Orakpo…Then it flashed up…With the 10 th overall pick, the 49ers select…MICHAEL CRABTREE!!!.You should pick the best playeryou need not just the best player but I’m sure they were stunned he was still there.I have a friend who goes to Tech and she says this guy has it all.Forget 40 times.Rice wasn’t all that fast and he turned out pretty good. This guy doesn’t have to be him this year as Rice struggled as a rookie but our offensive potential just got a whole lot brighter. Thanks to the Jags and Raiders for not picking hom and big thanks to our guys for picking him.
You never saw Rice caught from behind on film. I’ve scene Crab get caught from behind but it was on screen plays . . . maybe thats excusable.
Speed
agreed as when I saw him he didn’t get caught from behind and seems pretty strong…End of Texas game getting around/rid of 2 guys when everyone knew where the pass was going…We also have Gore,Davis, and other receivers(Bruce could help him alot) so he doesn’t have to be it right now.We never really heard of Rice before…I’m just glad we got what seems to be a good pick and a need pick all at once.
Game speed
I agree but from what I’ve seen and from what my friend tells me about seeing him live,he’s got game speed.I’d prefer hands and route running to pure speed and Rice was just plain scary as he had all 3…
New thread
I just opened up a new thread for all draft discussion, whether it be more Crabtree, or just general draft thoughts.

bad idea
Niners are a team full of needs – tackle, safety, qb, rb, etc – and we get rid of the 43rd pick in a draft which is believed to be deep? for next year? this team hasnt been to the playoffs since when? and we’re postponing adding a potential quality player? the draft is a bit of a crapshoot- if you dont believe me, scroll thru previous years picks and see how many high draft picks dont make it – so if its somewhat random, why postpone the pick? wait a year for a random event? makes no sense whatsoever. unless there’s some player on the trade block that we are going to bring in with a package including this pick.
