Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

2009 NFL Draft Day 1, Open Thread 3

Things are filling up rather quickly in our other threads, so I thought I'd roll this thread out to speed up the site and discussion.  Feel free to use this thread for discussion of Michael Crabtree or any other aspect of the 2009 NFL Draft.  We'll keep this thread rolling until the 49ers make their second pick of the draft.

Personally I'd love to see the 49ers grab a guy like Ron Brace with their second round pick.  Why not lock up the nose tackle position for the foreseeable future?  Aubrayo Franklin has been solid but he's a free agent after this season and I don't see Isaac Sopoaga as the long-term answer at NT.  Of course, maybe they go outside linebacker or offensive lineman.  What do you guys think?

Make sure and also keep an eye on Mocking the Draft for complete draft coverage.

i've got to think

he’ll be gone by our pick, but maybe we’ll trade up to nab him?

I don't think it's worth a trade up

Brown is kind of a pipe dream but I do like that the Tackles are dropping as well. I would be fine with Britton, Beatty, or Loadholt in the 2nd.

by OkayJay81 on Apr 25, 2009 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I’d love to get one of those tackles. I also have a sneaky feeling that the Titans pick Brown.

by bignerd on Apr 25, 2009 4:12 PM PDT reply actions

Poor Rey

He was the top dog of USC’s defense last year and yet Cushing and Matthews have gone before him. He should have came out last year and shouldn’t grind Erin Andrews after the Rose Bowl.

On second thought, grinding Erin was worth being a late late 1st rounder or 2nd rounder.

nice

I’m loving the run on WR’s since we already have Crabtree. A lot of gems are dropping to the 2nd round. We might get an even better value at #43 than we did at #10 with Crabtree.

The Steelers get Mendenhall back from IR this year. I bet they go Unger.

I forgot Unger was still there. Steelers don’t show a lot of patience with their RB

by bignerd on Apr 25, 2009 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Como?

Their bigger problem is that their top two backs have injury issues. If healthy, they have a great one-two punch. I’d look for them to pick up a big back later (since I’m betting Wells goes to AZ).

by cornball on Apr 25, 2009 4:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Based on needs

Lions need a tackle, so Britton or Beatty might go there
Patriots should be taking a 3-4 LB (probably laughing at the possibility of Everette Brown)
Browns are converting to 3-4, so need OLB’s (Barwin is a possibility and a Pioli kind of guy)
Packers already got Raji, so won’t be stealing Brace at NT… still need a 3-4 OLB or DE (maybe Jarron Gilbert or Connor Barwin)
Bills need a tackle bad (Britton, Beatty, or Loadholt)

It’s looking like we’ll have one of the OLB’s on the board (Brown, Barwin, or Johnson), one of the OT’s (Britton, Beatty, or Loadholt), and a couple of CB’s (S.Smith, Butler, A.Smith)

I agree – unusual depth ast this spot of this draft. Plus, I think we’ll be a lot better next year and won’t get as high of picks in each round. If the price is reasonable I say we do it. Maybe get an OLB like Everette Brown and then a CB like Sean Smith or a RB like Shonn Greene

I think you have to address some of the defensive issues here in the 2nd round given the talent that has dropped here.

Britton or Beatty may be good values at #43, but I’d be pretty disappointed with those picks if some other guys are on the board.

I apologize for being harsh. And yes, I do think it’s that much of a stretch. Spikes is a much different player than he was when made the Pro Bowl. Injuries have really sapped his athleticism. He’s a very good Ted, but not a dominant player anymore. Lewis is really one-dimensional and I think everyone knows it. He can tackle and that’s it. Pro Bowl safeties get picks. Michael Lewis does not.

OK I'll give you that

they’re borderline at best. However, IMO if they played for the Cowboys they’d be Pro Bowlers.

In any case they’re above average at their positions. I’m not worried about either of the corners, the SS or either of the ILBs. I think 2/3 of the DL is good if not necessarily great. I think Smith has the potential to be a pro bowler, don’t know how I forgot about him. The OLBs are again at least average with flashes of above average. The only really glaraing hole is NT.

I do think the defense is pretty decent with the core of Willis, J Smith and Clements. However, I still don’t like our second DE (Balmer/whoever) or OLB (Lawson has not been a good pass-rusher) or our FS or our NT. Couple that with the lack of quality depth on defense (who are the back-up LBs and safeties?) and I can see this D really struggling with injuries. I don’t expect the offense to score a ton of points, so that could be really troubling.

by cornball on Apr 25, 2009 5:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll give you OLB and FS and NT

even though I think Haralson and Goldson are promising, they’re definitely not established players. OT is much more of a long term hole, I think we’ll be fine this year if whoever it was we signed stays healthy. Would I LIKE more OT depth? yeah, but it’s not gonna kill us I don’t think. OG a hole? You’re reaching. Rachal Baas and Snyder should be all we need there. We really need a NT, but who was available at that pick?

We didn’t give up one player. We gave up two. That’s why I don’t like it. It makes it that much harder to address a position like NT, where players get over-drafted due to positional scarcity. I don’t expect Smith to be healthy the whole year, so a quality back-up is key. OG I think is a need because I have suspicion that Snyder isn’t as good as we think he is and that Baas won’t be back after this season.

Like it or not the team is still rebuilding. I would have liked Brown or Barwin there but the extra pick gives the Niners a lot of flexibility in next year’s draft. The Lions and Chiefs will likely suck and again and probably won’t be looking for a QB which makes them likely trading partners.

lol

I’d rather have Terrance Cody and one of the 2nd tier QB’s next year. Cody is going to be a monster in the NFL and makes Raji look like a child.

49ers are Geniouses!

If something goes haywire this year no matter what, 49ers will be able to draft a QB next year.

Plus

If Prince Alex comes back to claim his throne for us, those tow first round picks are gravy. Sweet, sweet gravy. This is how you build new legacies.

beg to differ

Most legacies are built in rounds 2-5 by smart organizations (like the Patriots).

The 49ers have had 2 first round picks in a few past drafts this decade and walked away with mediocrity.

Depends

If you pick (and manage) like Al Davis, all the 1st round picks in the universe wouldn’t help you. All I’m saying is, we have fewer holes than big question marks. If some of those tossups end up falling in the plus column, we’ve suddenly gotten ourselves in a great position to make moves in next year’s draft (like the Patriots). Why do they not need their 1st round picks? They have addressed gaping holes and have the bargaining room.

This makes me want to watch tomorrow.

Update on trade details from Sando

San Francisco picked up the 111th overall choice this year and the Panthers’ first-round choice in 2010.

If this ends up being a QB

We will rejoice, because we will have pieces in place for years, plus a lot of room next year, we had none this year.
