With the 74th pick of the NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select Glen Coffee, RB, Alabama
And so we have somebody to spell Frank Gore, maybe. With their third round pick, the San Francisco 49ers selected Glen Coffee, RB, Alabama. He was not as highly touted as Andre Brown (at least for some people), but Maiocco thought this might be the pick (if not Andre Brown). Here's a quick scouting report:
ESPN: Runs hard and flashes ability to bounce off arm tackles. Runs with excellent forward body lean and almost always falls forward but doesn't appear to have ideal lower body strength and is going to have a difficult time pushing the pile in short-yardage situations. Doesn't always keep ball tight to frame and can put it on the ground as a result . . .
Draft Countdown: Has a large frame with room to bulk up...Nice vision and instincts...Is physical and runs hard...Real decisive and attacks the hole...Excellent strength...Tough, powerful and always falls forward...Terrific work ethic.
Needs to add more weight, especially in his lower body...Not very elusive or nifty...Stiff and doesn't change directions well...Goes down too easy...Not a workhorse...Limited experience.
Maiocco just posted some info from the conference call with Coffee:
Coffee said he is excited about becoming a teammate of Frank Gore, whose style he admires. Coffee describes himself as a pounder - a player who would rather "run over you" than try to run away from defenders. "I'm passionate and I love contact," he said.
Coffee said he believes playing for Nick Saban at Alabama will help him in his transition to the NFL. "He's the best coach to play under," Coffee said. "I feel prepared very well for the NFL."
Some YouTube video after the jump.

You know...
… the kid is a hardnosed runner when he has a lineman’s facemask, lol.
Good kid...
But I don’t want to see character picks with the 2nd pick of the draft and our only pick before round 5. I can see him getting around 3 YPC since he doesn’t waste much time in the backfield laterally, but there were potential NFL starters on the board (esp. Andre Brown) that somehow graded lower.
Coffee simply isn’t explosive enough in the lower body to get out of the backfield consistently IMO. Hope he proves me wrong though, but he’s a decent complimentary back at this point and COULD develop into more.
Rays in '08.... Desmond Jennings - the breakout continues.....
I'm not a fan of this pick
Especially since we don’t have another pick until round 5. I got pretty smashed yesterday, and was very very happy with Crab being a Niner, it still doesn’t feel real to me.
Plus we get Carolina’s 2010 1st rounder. Awesome. Perhaps the Niners are able to dangle a 2010 3rd rounder for a 4th and 5th today. I’d say make it happen.

guess this is where we're supposed to trust the management?
just based off of what I’ve read, I’m not sure why you’d pick Glen Coffee ahead of Andre Brown, or even ahead of Rashad Jennings for that matter (two other power running backs who seemed to have more upside)
of course, I’m basing this solely on little clips I’ve read haphazardly over the last 6 months or so, so what do I know?

that's my thought
Maybe they’ve blown this pick, but they’ve obviously watched plenty of tape of both Coffee and Brown. I’m sure there are folks who will not give them the benefit of the doubt.

One thing I like about Coffee
he doesn’t have a lot of college carries on his frame. he’s got a lot of room to improve, where as a Rashad Jennings is almost peaked in terms of ability. Atleast, that’s what we have to trust, yeah.
by Andrew Davidson on Apr 26, 2009 8:05 AM PDT up reply actions
the
only time I saw coffee play was the Bama bowl game where Bama laid down on the bed. My thoughts from that game were 1) Bama sucks 2) coffee is the only player making an effort and standing out at all.
who knows maybe it works. or it doesnt
curious about
when the safety gets taken (Rashad Johnson is still on the board), our edge rusher (whose left?), and OT (Jamon Meredith is around)?
by Andrew Davidson on Apr 26, 2009 8:14 AM PDT up reply actions
all that matters ...
OT Jamon Meredith, FS Rashad Johnson, and pass rusher Lawrence Sidbury are all NOT going to be there going into the beginning of round 5
speaks a little to our placing some confidence in Goldson & M. Smith
"Those boos really motivate me to make something happen." - Bonds
Meredith or Johnson
I think they are worth a 2010 3rd rounder to get into round 4 to land either guy if he’s there in round 4.
If the team can get a 4th and 6th for next year’s 3rd, I’d take it. Especially if it meant getting Meredith or Johnson.

Roll Bama Roll comments
Over on Roll Bama Roll I posted the following:
What do you folks think of Glen Coffee? He is being brought in to be a complementary back to Frank Gore. So he won’t be starting or getting the bulk of carries. What are your thoughts on Coffee in this kind of role?
I’ll post responses here as they come in.
First response
He’s a good, physically pounding runner, and he would probably do well to platoon with Gore. He’s not the explosive kind of runner that Gore is, but he can extend Gore’s career by taking some of the carries, and he can give you some solid production.
And beyond that, I think he just fits with what Singletary wants. He’s a good kid, very tough, who will work hard.
by David Fucillo on Apr 26, 2009 8:11 AM PDT up reply actions
Second response
i’ll leave the technical commentary to the guys, but i can tell you that glen is a very determined young man. he made a concious decision last summer and publicly claimed the season he was going to have BEFORE summer practice began. the niners have selected a diamond in the rough that will soon shine in whatever opportunity he is given.
by David Fucillo on Apr 26, 2009 8:12 AM PDT up reply actions
“diamond in the rough” who gets the smaller part of a platoon with Gore … if Michael Robinson or Thomas Clayton weren’t going to be able to fill this role, we absolutely needed someone who could
otherwise we were almost guaranteeing a worn down, over-used, likely injured Frank Gore for the last third of the season
"Those boos really motivate me to make something happen." - Bonds
another thing about this pick that bothers me ...
going into this draft, I was really thinking in terms of -
1) we need to shore up on a solid/safe offensive tackle
2) we really really really need a pash rusher
& 3) a strengthened secondary would be my third priority – (i.e. – someone to compete with either Dashon Goldson for FS or Walt Harris for CB)
Now we are looking at the 5th round, and we have addressed 0 of these needs …
yes, by some freak occurance (thank you Al Davis) a great value in Michael Crabtree just fell to us (and by the end of the season, he may even rank #1 in front of Isaac Bruce, Brandon Jones, Josh Morgan, Jason Hill, Arnaz Battle, & Dominique Ziegler) – sounds sweet to me
yes, we now have a second first round pick in 2010 in a stronger draft – sweet
so #1 was exciting, & having some powerback/Coffee (instead of Brown or Jennings) to take some of the load off of Gore in an increased running game sounds wise
but our unaddressed needs are nagging away at me – guess we are really seeing the “take the best player available” philosophy in action as opposed to drafting to fill your needs philosophy – let’s start praying that Marvel Smith has his first healthy year in 3 years
"Those boos really motivate me to make something happen." - Bonds
pass rusher
I still think pass rusher is an overrated need. The pass rush wasn’t great but we’ll be getting a full season of Haralson and potentially new technique from Lawson.
by David Fucillo on Apr 26, 2009 8:20 AM PDT up reply actions
I still think a good NT was the most underrated need. I’m fine with Smith, Haralson and Lawson getting the bulk of the snaps at the OLB spots, but I’d feel a lot better about the ability of Haralson and others to get to the QB if we had found an upgrade over Franklin/Sopoaga at the NT this offseason. I know there wasn’t really a guy there in the 1st round after Raji was off the board, but I feel like not much of an effort was made to somehow improve our ability to get after the QB this offseason when it was pretty clear we didn’t do it very well last year.
Thing A
All the good NT prospects are gone now.
Brace, Vaughn Martin, Knighton, Sammie Lee Hill, and others who were supposed to last longer. No NT this year.

I definitely see why people are disappointed with the pick. But I also think it’s worth seeing how it plays out (the RB pick). I do think there are still several needs that need to be addressed. Curious to see what the rest of the draft brings.

Coffee VS. RINGER
I’m a little shocked that Singletary, having a GREAT DRAFT, didn’t take JAVON RINGER!!! I feel that Ringer is just that “a ringer.”
Nevertheless!!! Coffee is solid but I simply would of taken an experienced Ringer, he was up for the Heisman, not that it matters, but could easily become a big name player, not to mention a big time play maker…
49ERS!!!!!!!! WHOOT!!!!!!!!
- Houston, Texas
Ringer
has a lot of college carries, and consider at his peak. You never want a guy with a lot of carries on his body that’s already at his max. Coffee has a lot of upside, and I like the pick better than I would Ringer. I don’t think Ringer will have any sort of relevance in the NFL. Don’t get me wrong, he was a great college back, but he’s got so many carries and won’t be able to run over NFL sized players.
by Andrew Davidson on Apr 26, 2009 8:25 AM PDT up reply actions
PS
I think that Singletary is showing some Foresight with Coffee and is going to change Coffee’s mentality with the new 49ers “Old School” Culture. He’ll work on Coffee’s weaknesses, Lower Body Power, etc…, and make Gore Coffee’s Mentor… Maybe in 2 years Coffee will be starting, maybe sooner or maybe someone to eventually trade after going through the 49ers System, we’ll see.

ranking their WRs
They’ve got a lot of young names, but I think the 49ers bring equally young WRs and there is a lot of talent there (in SF).
Who exactly are the #1s on each team is one question to be answered as well. Bruce was the #1 last year but is expected to come off the bench this year….

Nit a good pick
with Ringer on the board and a few other RB’s and passing up on a player in the mold of Jason Peters, being Meredith was a TE, is baffling
LG
agree on Ringer
i would have been happier with Jamon Meredith at OT but i like Coffee a lot
although I agree on Ringer, think we could have landed him in the 5th round possibly too…or traded up into the 4th to grab him
Patriot strike again
Their picks make sense and their draft approach makes sense maybe we should take notes
LG
Two words.
Mental Toughness.
That video showed me why Singletary wanted this guy, he’s a hard hitting, God fearing, pound the rock kind of runner.
Though I didnt know anything about this guy till now, I’m happy we got him still.
Plus, he seems the personality that will mesh with Frank well.
Meh
I’d rather get a RB early like this then wait the whole 4th round and maybe not get anything of quality. But I agree with you, we might have gotten him later.

By the 5th round, athletic football players will be off of the board. CB/FS’s aren’t found in rounds 5/6/7, those are special teamers.
There are still some sleepers at NT, OT, and OG available. Other than that, I think we’re walking away from this draft with the entire weight of the draft on Michael Crabtree and that 1st round pick next year.

After the smoke clears from the draft
We’ll be able to take a better look at free agency. Where are our big ticket items? Crabtree? That’s it. Aside from that, we have some cash to spend on players that have proven themselves. The draft is always a crap shoot even with #1s…
Big Tickets??
We left them in next year’s draft. Darius Butler and Rashad Johnson would have been big at 2 and 3. Then at 4 our Rb Would have still been there!!

Matt Stafford
Talking about the tough times of a 9-4 season at Georgia his freshman year. This should be interesting.
1st Predictions
We traded away our top ten defense, I guess we can wait for it. Not picking Darius Butler and Rashad Johnson will haunt us.
LG
The overreaction here is amazing
From Scouts Inc.’s pick-by-pick analysis:
10. (74) San Francisco 49ers
The pick: Glen Coffee, RB, Alabama
What he brings: Coffee is a tough downhill runner who does a good job finishing his runs. He shows good patience and does a nice job letting his blockers get into strong position. However, Coffee doesn’t show an elite burst and we have questions for his ability to hit the home run.
How he fits: We really like this pick for a team that has already picked a playmaker in receiver Michael Crabtree. Coffee will provide quality depth behind Frank Gore. He is a no-nonsense, downhill runner who plays bigger than his size. This pick will give the 49ers a second back in what has become a two-back league.
Never said he was a bad pick
I’m speaking of what we passed on trading picks he would have been there at 4.
LG
like I said, I just don’t see how he is as big of an upgrade over Thomas/Robinson as some other guys on the board woulda been at other spots.
Thing A
Robinson isnt a good RB sure he's a niner and we root for him but don't kid yourself, this kid could be abetter goaline back than Gore
LG
hmmm....
this kid could be abetter goaline back than Gore
what are you basing this on? I don’t claim to know a whole lot about this kid, but the scouts clearly disagree with you

That sounds like it could be the exact scouting report for Robinson if he were in this years draft as a RB. And I just really want to see Clayton finally get some regular season snaps.
Thing A
That's great and all...
but when are we going to address the O-line?
Blowing it
Rashad Johnson at safety should have been the pick. at 3. We could have gotten a compimentary RB in FA — even like an Edgerrin James! — IF Clayton didn’t work out. Meanwhile, our true needs continue to be ignored.
I’m sorry to say it, because I respected the guy before yesterday even with his previous mediocre drafts, and taking Smith and Balmer at 1 in previous years — I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt — Scott Mac is out of his league. He can’t compete on draft day with the veteran horse traders and better scouting systems in the NFL. I predict this will be his last draft. He has set the Niners back a long way by not addressing needs with very good prospects.
And by the way, we don’t know that 2 number 1s automatically translate into getting a great QB next year in the draft. If they are that great, the team sitting there will take the guy.
More importantly, QB is NOT our most pressing need. Hill did a very good job in an insane situation last year — he went from first string to seond string to first string, 1 head coaches, 2 offensive coordinators and two rookie wide outs, one who were injured mid year. Never played with Bruce before. Gore gets injured. Our Oline was a mess at RT and Staley was / is in transition at LT. HOW MANY QBs DO YOU KNOW COULD HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN A SITUATION LIKE THAT? Hill is good and he’s a leader. He’d take NE or the Giants to the Super Bowl. He’d do fine in Miami. Get off the QB thing!
We need a DEFENSE that can play against a playoff team like NE, the Giants, Eagles, Dallas even. We can’t hang with them at all. We looked pathetic last year against good teams like that..
We need a pass rush, and a really great safety that isn’t injury prone. Those needs could have been addressed in THIS draft by taking:
Sincim in round 2 (the Giants took him right after us),
Rashad Johnson at 3
and NT Dorrel Scott at 4.
With Crabtree ar 1, THAT would have been a draft that made sense.
no our OLB's ar fine
LB’s as well
Darius Butler and Rashad Johnson and we’re a better defense potential top ten. And the 1st round picks are for the USC Safety not a QB
LG
Now, that makes more sense.
and wouldn’t it even more sense to trade our #2 for their #2 and #4 or 5 this year. McC give up the farm this year. Bad deal!
Not Yet
I agree, Mcc could have done a lot better, but we still have four picks left, and although they are in the last rounds, you never know what could still be left. I don’t think it’s safe to assume McC has blown it just yet. We’ve only picked twice.
I also agree about the QB situation, but Hill is definitely NOT our Franchise QB, same with Smith and the guy we picked up from KC. But with two first rounders and a lot of potentially great QB’s next year, you have to think it may be on the top of their list as a pick.
Now all the niners need to do is to boost the men in the trenches and secondary, with these last few picks, and they won’t be off that bad.
It's not over yet
The trouble I have is we could have had some talented players this year. No doubt that Crabtree is a starter but we needed more front line players. I only hope that Franklin,Lawson,Moore and Williams will be Healthy and start this year or we’re back to last year.
by LASVEGASNINER on Apr 26, 2009 10:15 AM PDT up reply actions
Agreed
I think McC screwed up big when he only took the 2010 1st rounder, in exchange for two this year. We should have gotten at least another fifth or something. Now we have to sit here as all these good defense players pass us.
And something tells me that about half the players you mentioned are going to be injured at one point or another next season.

Moore is one guy I was high on when we took him a couple years ago. This is probably his last chance, but I am highly intrigued by what he could do in the pass rush. Maybe nothing, but he was a talented DE at Nebraska and could be a solid situational OLB. We’ll see if he can even stay healthy.

Coffee...
…was our most complete back last year and I think he’ll do well in the NFL as a “second” back. He’s physical enough to be a between the tackles runner and follows blocks very well, plus he’s an excellent pass catcher out of the backfield and was our back as far as pass protection goes. There are some concerns with his break away speed, but he’s solid enough to be very productive and keep the chains moving. We actually ran his “success rate” numbers, a la Football Outsiders, and found that he ran at a 59% rate, which would have been tied with Deuce McAllister for 2nd in the NFL. He split a lot of time with Mark Ingram (more of a power runner) at Alabama, though, so he’s not a workhorse grinder, but still, I think y’all have a solid pick here.
But is he a priority?
. Wouldn’t you consider him a project player? 3rd stringer right now. What about the OL. you got to have holes to run through.

just for the record, todd and i are Bama fans trying to provide insight about the player you just selected. one we think rather highly of, i might add. so while we might be able to provide some insight into how he will fit in your system, we really cannot address the overall sutability of the pick given the particular situation of your team.
I honestly wouldn't. consider him a project player
He’s had three different offensive co-ordinators in as many years, so picking up a new scheme shouldn’t be that difficult for him, and I think he has the physical tools to be a productive backup to Gore right away. I don’t necessarily know if he’s a PRIORITY for y’all as far as need positions go (don’t follow the NFL as much as I used to), so you may have a gripe there.

yea I mean obviously 6’4" to 6’1" is a significant difference but did teams really think his listed college height was his real height? I’m assuming most teams assumed he was 6’2" or 6’3" prior to the combine and were probably a bit disappointed he was an inch and a half shorter than that. I know “football is a game of inches” but I never though they meant it like that.
Thing A
ok ... make sure and watch the above youtube video ...
Do you know what we’ve drafted this year? – attitude – We’ve drafted physical with an F.
After watching that video, I like the Coffee pick a lot more. The kid obviously has heart. Preferring to go through instead of around a blocker, being proud of his scars, having a favorite verse that he applies to football about getting all Biblical on the defender’s ass reminds me of Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction.
One thing I’ll give Crabtree, I didn’t want to draft him, but I started to like him more and more as he kept getting passed up – I’m not sure how his attitude could have been better – they kept asking him “how do you feel about not being taken yet?” – and he just kept with the same response – “now I can’t wait to actually play these teams.” Just saying that during picks 7-9 might have been enough to win Singletary over.
I feel like we haven’t really met our most pressing needs, but I like the spirit that we’re getting with these guys. You can see how this is becoming more and more Mike Singletary’s team. I’m interesting in giving this whole thing a chance.
"Those boos really motivate me to make something happen." - Bonds
Do you know what we’ve drafted this year? – attitude – We’ve drafted physical with an F.
After watching that video, I like the Coffee pick a lot more. The kid obviously has heart. Preferring to go through instead of around a blocker, being proud of his scars, having a favorite verse that he applies to football about getting all Biblical on the defender’s ass reminds me of Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction.
Yeah, but none of that makes him good.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

Quality
I bet GeoMak would think it makes him good on a Singletary team.

I believe you can go in and delete it if you want. FanShot’s don’t clutter as much as FanPosts.

I'm almost afraid to jinx it
but is anyone else nervous about who may be available at our next pick?

Keep Dropping
I really want Meredith to fall to us. I love the guy’s attitude and I think he could be excellent in a couple of years.
Tom will never be as cool as Joe
After the Draft is over
I wonder how Mgt will be graded. Wil McC be considered the Hero or the Goat?
6' 209
he’ll be able to add some weight before the regular season, no?
by Andrew Davidson on Apr 26, 2009 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions
weight
In response to this and Dre’s reply, Coffee says he’ll be putting on 8-10 lbs…puts him at close to 220

Leroy Hill is now a free agent!
So, I’ll admit to not being too knowledgeable about the guy, given I wasn’t expecting him to be free…anybody know if Leroy Hill might make sense for our team? I know he’s considered to have a lot of potential as a pass rusher, but he’d be too expensive as a pash rush specialist…
leroy had 7.5 sacks his rookie year
no more than 3 in a season since.

I noticed that
But, I keep hearing about how it’s been injury and the seahawks just not blitzing him (though, I guess the same could be said for Lawson to some extent), i.e.: “Seattle underused him as a blitzer, but he could consistently contribute 5-10 sacks. He’s very quick and agile and though not indestructible as a tackler, punishing.”
i hear ya
i guess the main question is. how much is he worth?
by Andrew Davidson on Apr 26, 2009 11:16 AM PDT up reply actions
FanShot
I threw up a FanShot about it. Not sure if they’d invest money in a guy who’d be platooning with Lawson and Haralson (although maybe that’s a poor assumption on my part).

Music
In the background you can hear “Free-Fallin” playing. I’m guessing they were wise not to play that in the first round for players dropping from projections.
Bengals drafted a punter

but they already drafted two OTs, right?

Later 5th round pick
The pick later in the 5th could be at OLB where there should be a couple of intruging guys still available.
Tom will never be as cool as Joe
there are 2 good OL sitting there
I will not state names.

I just want to call myself out for suggesting Duke Robinson with pick 2
GM, I am not

Duke
He went first pick of the second round in the SB Nation mock draft.
by David Fucillo on Apr 26, 2009 11:25 AM PDT up reply actions
Packers already took an OT also
they took TJ Lang (good run blocker) in the fourth – he’s the second tier guy I wanted but oh well
Duke also
Fine, I’ll say his name. I think Duke Robinson is an option too

OLB
I could see them going OLB eventhough I don’t think thats the right pick

why no Meredith?
this is strange isn’t it?
by Andrew Davidson on Apr 26, 2009 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions
I just don't get it.
LBs would have been available later in the 5th.
Tom will never be as cool as Joe
Does management want an OT?
I don’t understand the apparent lack of urgency in getting one. They must really think Marvel Smith’s back is in good shape. I don’t get it.
Here you go
Got a post up with a scouting report.

McKillop is a good pick
As a WVU fan, I’ve had to deal with McKillop at Pitt for the last few years. He is a steller LB who will give us much needed depth. And if we stay in the 3-4, after Takeo leaves, he will be a good player to have lined up next to Willis.
I know some of you guys haven’t heard of him, but IMO, he’s a good pick up, especially in the 5th round.

I mentioned Shaun Rogers and Peppers in a comment yesterday
Does anbody know if the Rogers/Mangini sitituation has blown over? I like him over Peppers. If either trade was there for the taking ( 1 first rounder, and maybe a third) would you pull the trigger?

Falcons go OT
But it’s not Meredith, What are we missing?
by SanFranSoldier on Apr 26, 2009 12:07 PM PDT reply actions
Apparently ESPN is going to fill their entire “Brett Favre/T.O. and the Cowboys” void with Mark Sanchez
Thing A
ESPN
So glad I’ve stuck with the NFL Network for the entire draft. Although I flipped over to ESPN and got the classic Mel Kiper montage video.

Erin Andrew is the only thing you’re missing and there hasn’t been nearly enough of her today.
Thing A
i know
Andrew is the only highlight. other than that, ESPN’s bias is no fun

Conversation
For those wondering where everybody is, the conversation has mostly moved into the McKillop thread. We’ll be there until the 49ers 5th round comp pick:
