With the 184th pick of the NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select Bear Pascoe, TE, Fresno State
With the 11th pick of the 6th round, the San Francisco 49ers select Bear Pascoe, the aptly named tight end out of Fresno State. This was a guy I was thinking the 49ers might draft, but I wonder if it's a round too early for what will essentially be a blocking tight end in the mold of Billy Bajema.
Here's a scouting report from Draft Countdown:
Strengths: Great height with a large frame and adequate bulk...Super tough...Has reliable hands...Excellent blocker both on the move and in-line...Runs with power after the catch...Smart...Good awareness...A hard worker.
Weaknesses: Stiff and is not very athletic...Timed speed is well below average...Not very strong...Isn't a vertical threat and won't stretch the field...Doesn't get much separation...Not very elusive...Poor leaper...Limited upside.
A rather unique video of Bear Pascoe after the jump.

Brief recap of Singletary on NFL Network
-Shocked Crabtree was there
-Crabtree is dynamic, questions about his foot but he checked out with 49ers doctors
-Exciting for the organization that he was there
-Sees Coffee as a guy that is a downhill runner.
-Runs big even if not a huge RB, great motor
-Very comfortable after having Nate Davis out to Santa Clara
-The dyslexia is something the 49ers can deal with, and the QB coach thinks he can do the things he needs to do to make it work
-The team clearly wants to win and with taste of winning they believe in it
-tone is up-tempo
-In moving to head coach: great people to work with make things easier
-he and McC are on the same page, which is the most important thing
-Some jokes about Tom (the guy in the NFL Network studio) – overachiever who played hard
-Some Bears practice stories about Singletary
Good interview! Fun to watch

So Far
I don’t hate any of the picks so far but I am a little disappointed that they haven’t gotten a tackle. They are going to be in the exact same position they were in last year if Marvel gets hurt.
Tom will never be as cool as Joe
Marvel won't
Plus, we can address the line with our 2 first rounders next year.
MURS for President!!!!!!!
I agree they can address it next year but
I want to win this year. At what point do we stop saying they are a couple years away.
Tom will never be as cool as Joe
given
that we almost got into the postseason with the current line….
and Rachal + Staley’s progression,
it could be stopgapped until next season, IMO.
MURS for President!!!!!!!
I agree with you
I am even confident in Snyder at right tackle if Marvel goes down. Now if we have two injuries and Sims has to play, then its game over for us.
2 injuries at OT
and most teams are toast. This is not a situation unique to the 49ers

This Year's Line
I like the starters this year but I would have said the same thing last year if Jennings stayed healthy. How did that work out?
Tom will never be as cool as Joe
Oh, I wouldn’t bet that he stays healthy this year.
by Mr. Nice Guy on Apr 26, 2009 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions
I couldnt be more excited!
I know why Singletary selected him. TOUGHNESS to the max, and he’s a great guy.
It doesn't matter
Who ever we get in the 7th round will just end up a career scout team player, if even that.
not necessarily
Certainly no guarantees but there have been some talented 7th rounders out there. Eric Heitmann was a 7th rounder. Even Billy Bajema was a 7th rounder. Not a great overall tight end, but a great blocked TE.
by David Fucillo on Apr 26, 2009 1:58 PM PDT up reply actions
True
But you don’t typically see game time results from them until a few years after being drafted. That’s why I don’t pay much attention to them, as far as draft time goes. Even if they become quality picks, we more than likely will not know until about 3 to 4 years from now. And if you look back at the past…5 years, those guys didn’t make the team, or are not around any more. Minus Bajema, and Heitmann, who was 8 years ago.

They picked
Jason Smith – OT }
Who are both probably day one starters
James Laurinaitis – ILB }
then they select a CB and DT who are need positions on the rams
then another speed WR
49ers all they did was add depth, addressed no needs what so ever.
http://www.49ersboard.blogspot.com
lol
I hate draft grades. Wait a year before you grade a draft. I didn’t know Josh Morgan was going to be a beast, some people thought this guy was a useless pick.
Time will tell my friends, dont grade just yet. Because they basically mean nothing.
by Poundtherock on Apr 26, 2009 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
I was optimistic about Morgan last year
because of his size and speed.
Again the 49ers have not addressed a NEED!!
http://www.49ersboard.blogspot.com
I agree with you
I don’t think there were Too many NEEDS though. I did feel we needed some DB’s, for sure, and maybe a tackle for depth at least. However, if Smith stays healthy we will be fine there. I am not even made about not getting a pass rusher, we have a lot of youth still at end and olb, if there is not much improvement after this season, then I would address it next year. I am mad about the Nate Davis pick though, I feel like that was a waste.
So far we have gotten the best WR in the draft
A good RB to compliment Gore
A smart linebacker
A Project QB with a strong arm
An ok blocking TE
not too bad I hope we get an Offensive lineman, and a defensive player
Frank Gore 2.0
Jeff Ulbrich 2.0
Alex Smith 2.0
and a Bear that Tom Rathman will adopt as a son.
Not sure how to compare Crabtree . . . best case he is Micheal Irvin 2.0.
glenn coffee = frank gore 2.0?
i sure hope so
by gogoldenbears on Apr 26, 2009 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions
I hope too
Coffee has the same style as Frank Gore. I thought the team was looking for a compliment?
I noticed that too
He runs like Frank, with power and quickness, I didn’t expect them to draft like that, but if we have 2 Frank’s, then I’m happy! haha
by Poundtherock on Apr 26, 2009 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions
Similar, but they don't sound the same
I think they can both punish the defense and run over guys. I get the sense that Coffee is more of a legit short yardage back. While Gore gets a lot of push after a hit he hasn’t bee a good short yardage back, especially in the red zone. I think Coffee will be that guy, though it sounds like he doesn’t have as much agility or top-line speed.
49ers are gonna take
Zack Follett if he’s not taken by the time 49ers pick in the 7th.
I can't believe he hasn't been picked up by anyone
I am all for the Niners getting him in the 7th, or as an undraftee.
No?
Why would you ask a tight end, whose strength is in blocking, to concentrate less on that and more on his hands for his work in what is supposed to be a run-heavy offense?
This guy is replacing Billy Bajema. Expect to see everything else remain the same.
checking in late
love the nate davis pick!
Still defending Rich Aurilia, and the Niners' classic unis
30 cornerbacks taken today
And not one to the niners, hmmm our Pass D is one of the best in the league and didn’t need any depth

Im suprised Jeremiah Johnson
hasn’t been drafted yet? He’s a good RB.
The RB class was deep this year..
definitely probably shouldn’t of drafted Coffee in the 3rd.
http://www.49ersboard.blogspot.com
yeah
I thought that was a little early to get another RB. Would have liked to see a defensive player or OT in the 3rd

I suppose it’s a 6th round pick so not a huge deal, but I do agree he probably could’ve been had in the 7th round.
by David Fucillo on Apr 26, 2009 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions
that's the see-saw, though...
We got something that we needed in a guy that we obviously had our sights on. People have been crying all day about not drafting according to need…and then when we do, they whine because it isn’t a flashy name.
I dont know.
Maybe. But I’d rather take him and be sure to have him, then just pass him up and assume he’ll be there.

How do you know?
Basically at this point in the draft, you are looking for a diamond in the rough. If we thought we saw something in Bear, how do you know another team didn’t feel the same way?

49ers
should take an OT and a OLB and they’ll be set
They won't be set.
They would have been SET without that ridiculous trade in roiund 2. For some reason the Pats picked 4 times in the second round. Wow the round we don’t wanna be in is the same round that the best in the draft acquires 4 picks!!
LG
Would you trade Crabtree and one of 1sts next year for those 4? I wouldnt. I don’t particularly like the trade we made either, but being all grumpy about it is already growing stale.
Thing A
who?
Who would you have picked in that spot that would have turned this around for you?
Tom will never be as cool as Joe
at 2nd
Cody Brown, Clint Sintim, Loadholt, and the 3rd Rashard Johnson. the 4th Ringer or the back we picked at 3. Making picks would have been better, especially since they’re claiming they are going to the playoffs. Mind you the Cards picked Cody Brown adn Rashad Johnson we’re gonna feel that trade for years to come!!
LG
They got to the point of being able to do what they did today
By doing what we did in that trade. People want us to draft like they Patriots, but they don’t want to make the sacrifices that are necessary to be in a position to control a draft board like they did this year.

Are idiots. You don’t draft to win for one season.
I like it
Big safety, played at LSU, top notch competition. Just hope he develops to be a game changer.
Could be like
Bo Scaife of the Titans. But less athletic. Scaife is so important to the Titans run blocking scheme that they franchised him. This could be Singletary’s intention in drafting him. Also a “character” guy.
