With the 184th pick of the NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select Bear Pascoe, TE, Fresno State

Pascoe_jersey_medium

With the 11th pick of the 6th round, the San Francisco 49ers select Bear Pascoe, the aptly named tight end out of Fresno State.  This was a guy I was thinking the 49ers might draft, but I wonder if it's a round too early for what will essentially be a blocking tight end in the mold of Billy Bajema.

Here's a scouting report from Draft Countdown:

Strengths: Great height with a large frame and adequate bulk...Super tough...Has reliable hands...Excellent blocker both on the move and in-line...Runs with power after the catch...Smart...Good  awareness...A  hard worker.

Weaknesses: Stiff and is not very athletic...Timed speed is well below average...Not very strong...Isn't a vertical threat and won't stretch the field...Doesn't get much separation...Not very elusive...Poor  leaper...Limited upside.

A rather unique video of Bear Pascoe after the jump.

Brief recap of Singletary on NFL Network

-Shocked Crabtree was there
-Crabtree is dynamic, questions about his foot but he checked out with 49ers doctors
-Exciting for the organization that he was there

-Sees Coffee as a guy that is a downhill runner.
-Runs big even if not a huge RB, great motor

-Very comfortable after having Nate Davis out to Santa Clara
-The dyslexia is something the 49ers can deal with, and the QB coach thinks he can do the things he needs to do to make it work

-The team clearly wants to win and with taste of winning they believe in it
      -tone is up-tempo

-In moving to head coach: great people to work with make things easier
-he and McC are on the same page, which is the most important thing

-Some jokes about Tom (the guy in the NFL Network studio) – overachiever who played hard

-Some Bears practice stories about Singletary

by jonesin25 on Apr 26, 2009 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions

not necessarily

Certainly no guarantees but there have been some talented 7th rounders out there. Eric Heitmann was a 7th rounder. Even Billy Bajema was a 7th rounder. Not a great overall tight end, but a great blocked TE.

by David Fucillo on Apr 26, 2009 1:58 PM PDT up reply actions

True

But you don’t typically see game time results from them until a few years after being drafted. That’s why I don’t pay much attention to them, as far as draft time goes. Even if they become quality picks, we more than likely will not know until about 3 to 4 years from now. And if you look back at the past…5 years, those guys didn’t make the team, or are not around any more. Minus Bajema, and Heitmann, who was 8 years ago.

then they select a CB and DT who are need positions on the rams

then another speed WR

I don’t think there were Too many NEEDS though. I did feel we needed some DB’s, for sure, and maybe a tackle for depth at least. However, if Smith stays healthy we will be fine there. I am not even made about not getting a pass rusher, we have a lot of youth still at end and olb, if there is not much improvement after this season, then I would address it next year. I am mad about the Nate Davis pick though, I feel like that was a waste.

A good RB to compliment Gore
A smart linebacker
A Project QB with a strong arm
An ok blocking TE

not too bad I hope we get an Offensive lineman, and a defensive player

Frank Gore 2.0
Jeff Ulbrich 2.0

I noticed that too

by Poundtherock on Apr 26, 2009 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Similar, but they don't sound the same

I think they can both punish the defense and run over guys. I get the sense that Coffee is more of a legit short yardage back. While Gore gets a lot of push after a hit he hasn’t bee a good short yardage back, especially in the red zone. I think Coffee will be that guy, though it sounds like he doesn’t have as much agility or top-line speed.

we couldn’t have been SET no matter what we did in the draft. It wasn’t an A+ draft, but it wasn’t awful either.

and next years should be much better and now we have 2 picks in the 1st round

who?

Who would you have picked in that spot that would have turned this around for you?

at 2nd

Cody Brown, Clint Sintim, Loadholt, and the 3rd Rashard Johnson. the 4th Ringer or the back we picked at 3. Making picks would have been better, especially since they’re claiming they are going to the playoffs. Mind you the Cards picked Cody Brown adn Rashad Johnson we’re gonna feel that trade for years to come!!

They got to the point of being able to do what they did today

By doing what we did in that trade. People want us to draft like they Patriots, but they don’t want to make the sacrifices that are necessary to be in a position to control a draft board like they did this year.

Right after that

Sadly the discussion on Bear will be mostly over. :(
I love this kid. He’ll be much better than Billy in my oppinion

the question of the day ... or of the last couple years

will we ever draft an OT?

technically

We drafted one two years ago.

I’m hoping he goes undrafted, we’d have a good shot at him and the CAL DE too

I'm seeing a trend

How we can get better if we keep drafting the same type of player?

by bignerd on Apr 26, 2009 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions

So, all you crybabies,

they finally got something they “need”.

+1

I’d rather take best player on the board every time

by Poundtherock on Apr 26, 2009 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Those crybabies

Are idiots. You don’t draft to win for one season.

I like it

Big safety, played at LSU, top notch competition. Just hope he develops to be a game changer.

by jonesin25 on Apr 26, 2009 3:02 PM PDT reply actions

Could be like

Bo Scaife of the Titans. But less athletic. Scaife is so important to the Titans run blocking scheme that they franchised him. This could be Singletary’s intention in drafting him. Also a “character” guy.

by DubsFanByTheZoo on Apr 26, 2009 4:17 PM PDT reply actions

Also

he’d be great with a double tight set. VD or Delanie on one side and Bear on the other. Run or Pass.
