With the 244th pick of the NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select Ricky Jean-Francois, DT, LSU
And so the San Francisco 49ers wrap up their draft in the seventh round by selecting a defensive tackle, Ricky Jean-Francois out of LSU. He's a guy I know nothing about so let's take a look at a scouting reports. First off, ESPN rated him 9th among defensive tackles (combining NTs and DTs). As for the reports, here's what Draft Countdown has to say:
Strengths: Good athlete...Long arms and big hands...Very quick...Explosive and fires off the snap...Good strength...Gets a lot of penetration...Decent instincts and awareness...Versatile...Good special teamer...Big upside.
Weaknesses: Average size...Does not always use proper leverage...An inconsistent motor...Was not a great student...Durability is a concern...Maturity might be an issue...Wasn't very productive...Relatively inexperienced.
After the jump, we've got some highlights of RJF.

lol … oh man, I just don’t know if I have the energy to think about this guy that much at the moment – actually watched the entire draft

solid pick
I remember this guy being a decent player at LSU, I was hoping we’d take him with the first 7th round pick…looks like he’d need to bulk up a lot before he becomes a NT though

Question for Danny
This was started on the previous thread, but not sure if you’d see it with this new thread. You asked how many of the picks would be starting next year if no injury issues. The question I have is what is the likelihood of any other draft choices starting.
If they took Everette Brown (or any other OLB), maybe they pass Manny Lawson on the depth chart but I think it’s no more than a platoon.
If they took an offensive lineman, they’d only start if there was injury.
If they took any defensive linemen (before this recent one), I think it would take at least a year before they could get in the starting lineup. Franklin played well enough to earn the starting NT job this year and I think Balmer/Evans get a lot of opportunities to start there.
An earlier safety pick probably gets a crack against Dashon Goldson.
Do you see more starters if the team had been more aggressive?

i had a little more nuance in my question...
…it was “which pick has a shot at starting?” it’s definitely true that most draft picks don’t start. i don’t even think crabtree is starting from day 1. it’s more about “do any of these guys even have a shot of unseating the starter at their positions?”
by Florida Danny on Apr 26, 2009 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
good clarification
An Everette Brown type would certainly have a shot at unseating Lawson.
by Fooch on Apr 26, 2009 4:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
exactly
i’d even say that if they had drafted a CB in the early rounds, he might have made walt harris expendable to the point that the draft pick would have had “a shot” at starting. any pass rusher or NT would have had “a shot” at starting also.

Tarell Brown!
I’m riding the TB bandwagon for now.

yeah, me too...
…just saying…if a 2nd-round CB came in and lit training camp on fire, he might have had a shot.

I think this guy is the epitomy of what I want in a 7th round pick. A lot of potential, needs development, could be a stud at some point.

(yeah, yeah, I got really bored towards the end of the 7th round)
overall, I know I’m excited – Singletary sounds excited -
1) top ranked #1 WR
2) & 4) – #1 draft pick in a better draft class next year
3) power running back with an attitude
5) depth LB who makes tackles
5a) young QB who we can see if he develops
6) Safety depth, can compete with the job – we’ll end up with something better than Roman was last year
7) decent cowboy blocking TE
7a) low round DT with upside
and no OT and no OLB – this is going to take some time to digest

Prediction is.........BOHICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You got to be sh*ttin me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The 2 biggest needs in the draft went unfulfilled, OL and PR.
The team traded away the 2 and 4, which basically boils down to Crabtree, hopefully a decent back up for Gore, and a bunch of flyers in rounds 5 through 7. I got news for you; teams aren’t built on players drafted in those rounds.
They had Everette Brown, 1st round talent right in front of them and let him go. He would’ve provided a pass rush, which the team needs badly from day 1.
Carolina is a solid team that will probably make the playoffs. That means that 1st round draft pick will not be all that high.
This organization NEEDED PLAYERS NOW that could step in and contribute NOW. This is unlikely to happen in more than 3 players tops.
In my opinion, this was a move that the GM made to buy himself some more time before he gets canned and nothing more. Passing a stud pass rusher wasn’t in the teams best interest-that’s for damn sure.
I think this draft guarantees the Niners will be picking in the top 15 next year as the major needs once again weren’t addressed.
With that being said-the tradition in the bay of piss poor draft classes seems to continue and all I can say is BOHICA-BEND OVER HERE IT COMES AGAIN.

I’ll definitely be getting something up to the front page, but if somebody wants to post a UDFA FanPost until then feel free. I’ll probably post a separate front page post when they start coming in, but will certainly link to any of the FanPosts.

I’ve scheduled the various draft picks conference call transcripts to go up in the next hour or so.
A little later tonight I’ll have a recap with my grade and opening things up for even more discussion.

Not a bad draft...
We got a steal with Crabtree, an extra first-round pick next year (or trade material this year) (other people have already made these two points, I know!), and the rest of the picks seemed to be at the right place for their floor (some have said that we might have reached a bit on Pascoe, I think, though), so any improvement on the upside would be a bonus. Just my summary from what I heard most of the community saying. Interesting that we didn’t draft Pass Rusher or OT, which most people here saw as our biggest needs, but I guess we’ll have to hope that our current crew steps up and stays healthy. Next year, in what many have described as a way better draft pool, we should have our best draft in yearrrrrs!
Alaska is a state, dammit! Can I get a Niner game on TV up here?
