...It was the worst of times...

Some of you may remember a post from last week where I was reveling in, what I considered to be, my best sports day ever. A day at the stadium, all of my favorite teams winning, who could ask for anything more?

Well, it looks like I asked for too much, and the sports gods needed to recoup their kindness by sending some frustration my way. This frustration took form in the NJ Devils who lost by giving up 2 goals in the last 80 seconds of game 7 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals… Sitting in my seat at the Prudential Center, silent and hoarse from screaming all game, I couldn’t help but think that I went from my best sporting experience to, what currently feels like, my worst sporting experience.

While I could rant for hours about how I now hate all sports, especially hockey, and how the sports gods have cursed me in recent years with the most frustrating teams to watch, I’ve decided to go a different route. Consider this the “Worst Sports Day Ever” thread. What is one day/sporting event in your past that haunts you to this day? What day would you like to eliminate from the history books to save you the constant pain and anguish you feel from it? Again, like the Best Sports Day thread, it doesn’t have to be specifically Niners related, but it most certainly can be (and I’m sure you’ll get some empathizers among the nation if it is about our Red and Gold).

Ugh… I can’t even watch Sportscenter the day after something like this…

This isn't professional sports

but a personal experience. I play Ultimate both for my college team and for a local club team. 2 years ago, we were in the game to go to nationals in only our 3rd year of existence, which would have had us breaking seed by several spots (very tough to do), up 14-9 game to 15 and I had played the best game I think I’ve ever played, still to this day, and I watched point by point as our team unraveled. We had two clear cut chances to win, one a drop in the end zone, and another a score that was called back on a violation. We wound up losing by one point. That’s the most miserable I’ve ever felt about any sporting experience, and to make it worse both my hamstrings and my quads cramped far worse than I’ve ever experienced in the car on the way home and we had to pull over on the highway so I could stretch against the barrier. It was terrible.

The next year, playing in the game to go again, again, trying to break seed by a lot, we lost by two points, but at least we didn’t choke away a lead…

Maybe this year

Got a lot....

I’ll try to remember mine for each sport and each team. These are not in any particular order:

49ers- Boy, there hasn’t really been ONE defining heart-breaking moment in a while now for me; I’ll have to go with the choke-job this past season on Monday night in Arizona. All they needed was about 2.5 yards to win the game; and understand, that’s the difference between 7-9 and 8-8 (same for the Cards 9-7 becomes 8-8 and then we go tiebreaker crazy to see who wins the NFC West). Basically, there’s a big chance that Super Bowl run might not have happened without the Niners awful play-call …

Sharks- Games 1 and 2 at home in The Tank against Anaheim a couple days ago were agonizing enough, but Game 6’s mail-in to end the best season in history just left me numb. Especially after Game 5’s OT win, which gave me the false hope that they could pull off a big comeback series win. Still hard to get over this one…

Giants- No question its the 2002 World Series. Only outs away from winning Game 6 at Anaheim…ughhhh, I won’t go on with this one. I think we all know…

Warriors- Had to be this entire season, or even more, last year, winning about 48 games, the best team in NBA history NOT to make the playoffs, despite being better than the year before when they beat Dallas.

Devils- Well last night sucked. I walked away from my TV after Carolina scored the tying goal, preparing for overtime then turned it back on about 15 minutes later only to see post-game stuff. Brutal. The 2004 loss to Philly in the opening round was also tough, but to see the best Devils team in franchise history in 2001 come up one game short against Colorado was bitter. Not to mention it was on my birthday.

what i meant to say was

that’s strange because world series 2002 is one of the best days in sports for me

ironically enough,

my socal birthplace puts me at odds with you in every sport except for the NFL. 2002 WS was likely the pinnacle of my sports high (born after SB titles), and love the ducks

That'll only happen if that one prospect is the second coming of Christ and redemption for mankind can only be achieved by smacking many balls out of the yard.

In 2002, I was fortunate enough to go to all seven games of the World Series. By a landslide, Game 6 was the worst day of my sports-fan life. We’re in Anaheim at Edison Field, Giants up 5-0, a buddy of mine talking smack to Angels fans about how we were about to win… And the tables turned. This was so disheartening, I knew the result of Game 7 the day before the game was even played. While Game 7 was a horrible, horrible experience, it still pales in comparison to Game 6.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

Follow-up

After Game 7, one of the Bay Area news crews sent a cameraman over to interview me and my friends. When they started asking me questions, I was short and rude to the jackass.

“What are you going to do on your bus ride home?”
“Sleep.”

“Think it’s going to be a quiet ride home?”
“Yes, it will be the middle of the night. I think we’ll all be asleep.”

I was also rude because I tried to run the person off, but they still stuck the camera in our faces. Seriously, I was pissed and miserable.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

yeah yeah game six 2002 same old same old

I actually was more depressed after game 7 because then it was officially over – after game 6 I went out, got wasted, and hooked up with some random girl. So that lessened the pain…

I know

I just mean what happened to me personally after each game – game six – go out and get wasted, game seven – lie on bed and stare at the ceiling all night

I didn’t even notice that . . . further proof that the Kobe situation was serial. Colorado was actually incident #2.

I’m from Sacto. We had that game won. When Horry hit the shot, the entire bar errupted. I put my head on the table for a good 3 minutes.

would be the NFC championship game where Roger Craig fumbled and LT recovered. Those damned Giants scored and kept us from a threepeat.

Oof, I’m still sick about that one. That was a heartbreaking thing to see, and the absolute ineffectiveness of the Niners after that was bad.

I guess it was about 15 years ago. I watched the Chicago Bulls play on TV, and Jordan played terribly. So, I decided to rip up his Fleer rookie card that is now valued over 1 grand.

but try being a Warriors fan instead of a Kings fan.
They have never even been anywhere near where the Kings have been.
We celebrated just being in the playoffs, and in the Kings’ couple years runs, it was almost a given.

Steve Young gets knocked out by AW

The Angels coming back in game six of the 2002 WS may have been one of my best moments.

Hands down the worst moment was when Laurence Phillips missed his block, Steve Young’s head bounced of Kirk Scrafford’s knee, Steve never took another snap and for the most part the Niners have had a tough time since. I hate you Laurence Phillips.

in the Rose Bowl when he scored against USC, that was the only possible reason to take him over any other QB in that draft or any single time the Yankees won the world series

I will not tolerate sob stories

I had to live through this. How can a sports fan recover?

Yes, your beloved Devils lost. They’ve won a cup, however. An embarassing defeat is bad, but you’ll survive.

The Montreal Expos don’t even exist anymore. I’ll never have a world series. The league actually had to hault play so the Expos couldn’t win the WS (actually it was because of greed). Now, the team has been relocated to Washington, and are the most pathetic franchise in the world (yet I call myself a fan).

My apologies, anytime I hear about bad sports stories, I’m reminded of my own personal horror. I don’t think I’ve recovered fully.

95 NCAA BB Title game

Arkansas vs. UCLA. AR goes in with the team that just won it all in 94. Underachieved all season, and had what appeared to be divine intervention to make it to the game (see Syracuse calling time out when they didn’t have anymore). It was like it was Destined to happen. An Arkansas team pulling a repeat. Arkansas being on the map for something besides Track and Field. And then……we got pwnd. I cried.

Without a doubt 1990 NFC Championship game aganist the hated Giants. The niners would have three-peated evn with Steve Young aganist Buffalo (remember Joe got hurt)
I actually cried not ashamed of it either.
A close send was the 1983 Championship game aganist Washington when the zebra’s stole the game from us. With a little luck we could have 7 Super Bowl’s. If we don’t trade Charles Haley to Dallas it could have been as many as 9 suber Bowls.
