What if We... Episode 3: Tradeville

Greetings country men,

May the morrow smile brightly apon thee. It is I, Patriclus of Oakland Towne. I'm fantastic, thanks for your concern. :)

In today's episode, I'd like to take a stab at a possible solution to our "dilemma" at wide out. Too much brooding talent for our conservative scheme. Let the creativity begin.

What if we: package together Jason Hill and a 2nd Round Pick for next season and put it on the trading block for a defensive playmaker?

A. Noone wants to part with Hill. He's starting to really come into his own, but as I see it, he's going to battle with Jones for our 4th best wideout. He's got a lot of potential and I think he could be quite enticing to a team lacking WR depth.

B. If we trade Hill, the drop off in talent is marginal. Brandon Jones seems to have a lot of the same tools as Hill.

C. What kind of talent do you think that trade proposal might attract? Is an up and coming NT a possiblity? Personally, that would be the only position worth upgrading with this type of trade, but what are your thoughts?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Ehh, I don't know

I just don’t think you’ll get much value for Jason Hill, or any of our receivers other than Crabtree really. He seemed to show definite improvement last season and has potential, but I don’t know how much other teams would be willing to give up for a 3rd year WR who is value is still almost all potential. Even with a 2nd round pick added in I wouldn’t expect to get much return.

I mean, the Niners aren’t really an offensive powerhouse so sending out our4th/5th best WR and 2nd round pick probably isn’t going to bring back an impact player at any position.

by OkayJay81 on Apr 29, 2009 2:29 PM PDT reply actions

This.

None of the 49ers WRs have any value. Basically a trade involving Hill (and oft-injured kid who has yet to show a whole lot more than occasional flashes) and a second rounder will have the value of pretty much just the second rounder.

With that said, there are probably plenty of defensive players in the league that are worth a second rounder. However, considering it isn’t Maddenville, I’m sure not very many of those players, ESPECIALLY playmakers, are available for trade.

this

but I’ll definitely be making some big trades (NT, CB, S) when Madden comes out.

Me too.

I want Brace. I think I’ll also try to pry away Everette Brown, since I liked him so much before the draft, too.

I think I’d let Goldson play FS, but I would probably put Reggie Smith in opposite Clements.

"None of the 49ers WRs have any value"

It’s about time people start realizing this.

No One but, us and the patriots

But, they are good enough to find the same guy in the draft (forget his name but he played with Nicks). So the only guy I would trade is Crabtree we didn’t HAVE to have him and I think I’d take Peppers str8 up for him and the Panthers may bite. If Peppers wasn’t such an Egomaniac the deal could possibly been done.

LOL

That was funny… and I wouldn’t do that either…

by HailState77 on Apr 30, 2009 8:53 AM PDT up reply actions

I want Jason Hill

Hill can be good. He isn’t worth trading though. Battle is the only person who is worth trading. We could trade him to Jacksonville. I don’t know what we would get for him though. We could also trade to the Jets to get somebody. We could package Battle and Roman to go somewhere but I don’ think we would get that much.

In Shaun Hill will trust

by iaalexeeff on Apr 29, 2009 5:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Battle has no value in the last year of his contract, and Jones isn’t going anywhere.

I like Hill, but from what the 49ers say about Morgan, I’m guessing he’ll never be more than a #3 on this team, and is likely 5th on the depth chart this year. I’m guessing Hill wold at best would get a 5th roudner from a desperate team, and considering this team went through 6 WR’s last year, I don’t think it’s worth it

But if the team wanted to trade a wideout, Hill would be the guy.

IMO, Morgan should be the guy to trade with Crabtree on board, but the FO loves him too much, so I don’t think that’s feasible.

by DesertFox on Apr 29, 2009 6:55 PM PDT reply actions

He's worth more to us than to them.

That’s the bottom line. We like him because we’ve seen him play. Why would you trade for an unproven slot receiver?

In Singletary we trust.

by grantmp on Apr 29, 2009 7:47 PM PDT reply actions

I would do this...

If I had too. Keep in mind I love the team we have right now, but if I had to this would happen.

Veron Davis and one of our 1st picks for Troy Polamalu and a 5th rounder or Justin Tuck. I figure Veron Davis is good, but not great. I realize he hasnt had a good QB to throw at him, but Tony Gonzalez didnt either and hes a future Hall Of Famer. Bear Pascoe could start and is a better blocking tight end then Davis is right now. So that could give the Niners an extra blocker for Nate Davis (who will start this season) and Frank Gore. I mean the Nines do want to run more and Marvel Smith is thier now and I expect the Niner to sign Hollis Thomas for thier defense. But thats just what I would do.

by oddthomas on Apr 29, 2009 8:05 PM PDT reply actions

Troy Polamalu

The Steelers are not trading the best defensive player in the NFL. But I like your taste in players.

by bignerd on Apr 29, 2009 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow

I don’t know what’s more out there Vernon Davis and a 1st rounder for Polamalu or a 5th rounder for Tuck.

Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

by methodrampage on Apr 30, 2009 7:09 AM PDT up reply actions

I'd go with...

… the fifth for tuck, just because it’d be like the 49ers are getting him for free, whereas at least Polamalu is actually costing something.

by sfgfan on Apr 30, 2009 9:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Isn't it hilarious

seeing what some people see as viable trades?

by Blank x2 on May 1, 2009 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Never said

it was viable just was stating i woulsnt give up 1st rounders nless it was for 1 of those 2 players thats all.

by oddthomas on May 2, 2009 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions

he never said trade a 5th for tuck

he said OR as in either polamalu OR tuck

by 3eyes on May 3, 2009 5:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Ok.......but.....

Trading VERNAN, might seem like a good idea. But, if you haven’t been watching much NFL lately, top tier TE’s are a premium. Make no mistake, Davis may have his slips, but, there’s no denying he is one of the top 5 TE’s in the league right now. Factor in also that the Niners are going to become a more run oriented offense, a speedy, big TE comes in handy with a steady dose of play action as not too many LB’s can keep up with his speed. Right now, I just think VD is too valuable to our team then to consider trading away for much of anything but a late 1st rd or VERY early 2nd rd pick.
Oh…..here’s a lil something to consider when you think of what a top flight TE can bring to a team’s O…..
1) You nailed Gonzalez, who simply helped move the chains on an offense that was in constant flux due to injuries (both physical and egomaniacal) at the HB position as well as a terrible set of Wideouts.
2) Yes, there may have been TO, but the Cowboys passing attack went through Jason Witten. There’s a good reason TO blew up at Romo for this. Witten simply produced.
3) How bout them Giants? Of course they had a terrific rushing attack, yet when the chips were down, Eli looked fro his security blanket in Jeremy Shockey. And before I forget, there was this little guy who played like a HOF’er during that Super Bowl run by the name of Kevin Boss. Even though Plex and his WO crew got all the accolades.

Finally, consider for a moment that Vernan was chosen for a different offense and is just now coming into his own. Thinking back a little ways, the importance a good TE can be found in our own history by 1 name………..Brent Jones. ’Nuff said.

by DarkkStarr1 on May 2, 2009 8:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Yea..

I know but still like I said this years team is good. And the Niners have 2 1st rounders. which by the way i would never trade.

by oddthomas on Apr 29, 2009 8:46 PM PDT reply actions

Jason Hill

We need him, and our second rounder. Jason Hill makes the receiving corps deeper. He has speed, he’ll go over the middle, and he can catch. Other teams may lack interest in him, but as depth at 4 or 5, he’s a nice option. If he can stay healthy, he’ll be able to make some plays.

I’d rather see the team do something with the Carolina first rounder to acquire something. There won’t be any textbook value on the draft pick until near the trade deadline (best case scenario would be a slow start). I’d like to see the Niners target OJ in next year’s offseason, and perhaps dangling a first rounder to the Rams could be enough to get him now.

This.

Still not sure what saying “this” means, but judging from the context i see it used in, i think “this” is an appropriate situation.

I think you have Jason Hill and Josh Morgan confused.

by DesertFox on Apr 30, 2009 12:21 AM PDT up reply actions

I think

he has Isaac Bruce confused, too. Does anybody really think he came back this year to be our THIRD WR?

I think not.

by Blank x2 on Apr 30, 2009 2:13 AM PDT up reply actions

I think he came back to get paid

Bruce will start the season as a started but I wouldn’t be suprised to see him displaced by Crabtree and Morgan in 2 WR sets by the end of the season.

Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

by methodrampage on Apr 30, 2009 7:11 AM PDT up reply actions

As I see it...

Beginning depth at WR:

Bruce
Morgan
Crabtree
Hill
Jones

By the end of the season:

Bruce
Crabtree
Morgan
Hill
Jones

Bruce is a precise route runner who will consistantly get open and make plays. I have a hard time seeing one of these raw talents surplanting him as Shaun Hill’s go to guy. This year will be a “survival of the fittest” kinda deal between the 4 other wideouts. Crabtree wins the starting role with Morgan and Hill nipping at his toes.

by Patrick J Smiles on Apr 30, 2009 10:22 AM PDT up reply actions

If...

… the team starts to fall out of playoff contention, I don’t see why the 49ers would continue to give Bruce touches when his contract (and likely, his career) will be over at the end of the season. Of course, that’s a somewhat unpredictable if.

by sfgfan on Apr 30, 2009 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Good Point

He would at least be the starter in the season finale against the Rams in St. Louis.

by bignerd on Apr 30, 2009 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Hill and Crabtree

I think Hill has the most chemistry with Hill. Brusce last year was a product of knowing that idiot’s offense
