Who is the Perfect Pick for San Fran?
Lets say for a second that the draft plays out perfectly for YOUR player. you know, the one that you PRAY somehow falls to the 49ers. If you had your choice of player, who would you want? I know we want a tackle, but lets assume that Jason Smith, Aaron Curry and Eugene Monroe are gone.. every other player has been mocked ahead and behind us, but those 3 are ALWAYS mocked above #10. So.. who would you want? Discuss below
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Isn't this...
… the same exact question that supraman asks in #10 here?

I was kinda looking for some poll results
to figure out where everyone stands on a position
are we ALL LT ALL THE TIME,
or would we take a WR if there, would you prefer to get Brown/Orakpo
just hoping to see some actual data..
Other than death and taxes, only 4 things in this world are indisputable:
Brandon Roy is the BEST player in the NBA in the clutch.
Montana to Rice were the greatest to ever play the game.
The Four Horsemen of Maddux, Smoltz, Glavine and Avery were unstoppable.
No one protects the pipes like Luongo.

I wouldn't...
… just take a WR if he’s there. The only WR at #10 I would take is Crabtree. If he’s there, he’s the pick, regardless of who’s left (I say this assuming Monroe/J.Smith/Curry are also off the board).
Otherwise, I much prefer Brown/Orakpo over any offensive lineman that’s left. Of course, it’s very unlikely Orakpo is there and it’s somewhat unlikely Brown will be, either. One could hold out hope, though.

well people seem to prefer Brown over Orakpo
and Crabtree over Maclin so far.
35 votes in and Crabtree/Brown lead the way with 7 followed by Sanchez and Orakpo with 5.
interesting that no one has voted for Oher, it seemed like Niners Nation was in love with the guy.

Well...
… if you’re looking for who people actually want, then that’s what your poll is going to provide. The difference, I think, between the poll results, and all the apparent “Oher love” is that people are trying to factor in who will be gone by the time #10 comes around. Realistically speaking, it’s entirely possible that of the above list, the following will be gone:
- One of Sanchez/Stafford
- Orakpo
- Brown
- Raji
- Crabtree
Take those five and couple it with your previous knocked out options of Monroe, J.Smith, and Curry, and there are eight players people like that will likely be gone. That leaves the choices of guys like Maclin/Harvin (who a few people aren’t fond of, myself included), the other out of Stafford/Sanchez, Maybin and the USC LBs, Jenkins, or Oher/A.Smith. People see OT as a glaring need (which I don’t blame them), and many people prefer Oher over A.Smith because he seems like the safer (and more versatile) bet.
This isn’t to say, of course, that I agree. If those are the choices the 49ers are faced with, I hope they take Sanchez or trade down. If not Sanchez, then MAYBE Maybin, but other than that I seriously hope they trade down.

i think he is one of the 3 players i have seen that NO ONE has going as low as #10
I ruled him, Monroe and J Smith out as I havent seen a mock yet where any of the 3 fall to 10.. all the other players i can point to and say yep i have seen a legitimate mock where they fell to 10

Forget the OT's pleeeeease
I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t want Maclin. He’s got Hester’s open field abilities and is actually a WR. If we can’t get a GOOD pass Rusher or Maclin and Crabtree the pick has to be traded. I don’t want any candy (site decorum) USC QB. Yeah that goes for Palmer too although he is good. The QB spot is not a must have position and this is a must make it to the playoffs season!!
If we pick at #10 it better be for an impact this season

says a guy named Rlott after a USC safety.
:)
But I get what your saying, I’m right there with you. Unless Monroe or J Smith fall to us, I say pass on an OT

Maybin
This is the deal:
This is the player with the highest upside of all the pass rushers. He had a great pro day work out and is moving up the charts. The kid might not be the most prepared to contribute on all 3 downs now, but in the long run should excel. It’s not like the Niners are going anywhere in a year anyway so the kid has time to finish developing.
Why is another pick better?

Re: Maybin
As high as I am on Maybin(Somewhere on this site said he’d be Defensive ROY if he starts), I think Andre Smith is the best way to go. Smith was the top OL in the draft when all you had to go off is tape, his combine and pro-day obviously hurt him. He’s being compared to the Paces of the football world, (IMO) he’s the best player in the draft.

Question
How can he be rated/projected as the number four or five player at his position and be considered the best player in the draft? Of ALL things, he screwed up the two things he shouldn’t have: his opportunity at the combine and his pro-day.
I’d be a little skeptical of taking him so early. With all of the other options that may be available, I would pass on Smith just because I don’t know if he can live up to the potential his raw talent shows.

Before the combine who was the best OT? Andre Smith, there was no question.

thats true he was guaranteed a top 2 spot..
he lost it at the combine and with his immaturity

Exactly
BEFORE the combine. He’s too lazy for us to risk a top 10 pick on. We are not in the position to be drafting people that early if they may be that much of a waste. I wouldn’t mind taking him on talent alone, but his work ethic and dedication are really scaring me…..

We're talking about an OT...
Are you guys really that concerned about the off-the-field issues of an OT? It just seems to me that unless Andre Smith has some legal issues that might prevent him from playing in the NFL, all that matters is his on-field performance. I was a tackle in my playing days, and there is something that clicks in certain linemen when the game begins. I personally was the kind of guy to goof around in practice and have an overall laid back demeanor, but when the game began, no one wanted to get on my bad side by messing around on the sideline because I was INTENSE! I had that switch that I could turn on when the game started and couldn’t turn off until we won. I see that intensity in the way Andre Smith plays (from film). He plays hard, with passion, and blocks through the whistle. IMO, Andre Smith should not be overlooked because he left the combine early or ran with his shirt off. I will admit though that the weak amount reps at 225 kind of bothers me because he LOOKS stronger than that on film. But that goes back to on-field performance I guess.
I’m a noob to NinersNation, so be gentle! LOL. But seriously, what do you all think about that point? Should this have been a fanpost or fanshot? Help a rookie out!
by SanFranFan4Life on Apr 7, 2009 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Andre Smith
I really like Smith’s talent, and if you remove any question marks he has in terms of his screwups, he’s a top 5 pick, more likely than not. The problem is, you can’t overlook his screw-ups.
If it were just some misunderstanding of a legal issue, then people may not be as hard on him (similar to the situation Raji is in). However, Smith has some SERIOUS work ethic issues. First and foremost, EVERY college football player knows when the combine is. This is especially true if you were thought of as one of the top offensive line prospects coming into the draft. Instead of continuing to work hard and maintain (or even improve) his physical aspects of his game, he lets them fall by the wayside. Basically, if you’re going to slack off during probably the BIGGEST three months of your life, what are you going to do once you’ve already amassed at $15M signing bonus?
Now it’s entirely possible that he has learned from his mistake and that he won’t make the same mistake again. However, many players have said “I’ve learned my lesson” only to show that they really haven’t. When you’re investing at LEAST $15M to $20M on a player, you kind of want to know that player will give it his all. It’s understandable that many people (and teams) are questioning A.Smith’s ability to do just that.
by sfgfan on Apr 7, 2009 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also.
Playing in the NFL is entirely different from playing in high school or even college. Slacking off may be okay when you’re younger, but in a league where EVERYONE is competing for a job, slacking off means you fall out of shape, you lose focus, and there are dozens of people there waiting to either take your place, or punish you for being out of shape/focus.
Again if I were making that big of a monetary investment on a player (not to mention the impact of a failed first rounder on the future of your franchise), it’s only understandable that I have some concerns about a player willing to give it his all on and off the field.
by sfgfan on Apr 7, 2009 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Valid points
You’re right, it would be totally different in the NFL if this guy is a slacker. Is that his issue? That he has a bad work ethic? I just assumed he knows how to work hard having played for Nick Saban. Sorry, I’m not has informed as most of the posters seem to be on here! That’s why I like this site though! Definitely don’t want an O-Lineman with a bad work ethic because they are usually the ones that need to work the hardest to be dominant. When I said I messed around and stuff, I did not mean that I didn’t work my butt off, because I did, and I wanted everyone around me to work hard also because its about the team and winning the games. I just liked to have fun while working hard!
Thanks for the insight, sfgfan. I agree with you, but I still feel that the Niners need to do their homework and due diligence on Andre Smith because it is possible for the 49ers to grab what was once considered a possible #1 pick overall at #10. The risk may far outweigh the potential reward, but that is for the Niner Brass to decide, not me!

Totally agree.
While I’m not a big fan of grabbing an OT this year at #10 (as the only two I think are worth a pick that high are Monroe and J.Smith, but they’ll be long gone), I hope the 49ers do indeed to their due diligence before selecting a guy like A.Smith and truly find that he has indeed learned his lesson before spending that kind of a pick on him.
Welcome to the site, by the way.

Brown/ Orakpo/Jenkins is the order of my preference. Any one of those three and I’d consider the first round a success. I like Raji here too, but if he hasn’t tested positive as his agent claims, he probably won’t last to #10.

I just can’t see Cleveland, Oakland and Jacksonville all letting him by. You would have to definately consider him at 10. I don’t think WR is a huge need, but Crabtree is awfully good.

Interestingly, neither Oher or A Smith are really doing all that well. So I take it unless Monroe or Smith fall to us, most people are against an OT

Why cant we have a MouthPunchin Defense!
Orakpo @ 10 would be sweet, but so much would have to happend for him to slip to 10. I do like Crabtree @ 10 as well, but i say hes gone by #8. I have this weird feeling Stupid Green Bay will take the guy we want, Like Brown, then we’ll be left with a decision. Im sticking with my surprise pick, forget, Malaluga, and cushing, P. Willis needs some help , and he’ll get it with Clay Matthews!!!!! Get this man on our Defense!

OLB is changing the game, more teams goin with 3-4 defense so we should invest in a OT Oher or A.Smith. 2nd round Uconn’s OLB Cory Brown ran a 4.60 is strong and fast come from the edge.

I like that combo as well. id lean towards Oher slightly. Our outside pass rush right now is as ferocious as a kitten. I just keep seeing Malalugas name everywhere, id go Matthews first… its all good.
