What If We... Episode 2: Attack of the Moans
Greetings Niners Nation,
Patrick J. Smiles back in action and it's time for another installment of my own version of "hypotheticals." In this episode I want to discuss the possibility of a big time trade target. Julius Peppers. Of course we've already been over this a billion times early this offseason, but I feel it's worth revisiting. And away we go.
What if we: Trade our first and our third to Carolina for "The Big Dirty", Julius Peppers. With our 2nd pick we take Brace from BC. With pick number 4, we select Jennings out of Liberty in round five we snag Barden. How nasty would the Niners be coming out the gates with Brace and Peppers in our front 7? Answer: Hecka nasty. That's right, I said it. "Hecka."
Now I know there are a lot of reasons why this may not work, and I'd love to hear them, but also, I'd like to hear some alternate senarios for the draft. I'm particularly interested in your 1st and 3rd choices. I wonder if they equal Peppers.
Do your thing Nation...

Didn't you hear, redundancy is a sin.

Kidding..
From what I’m reading, Ramses Barden is going to be a second round pick. Raiders have been stalking him pretty much, and they don’t want to miss out on their guy. (IMO) Jax will take him since, 1 Troy williamson is their best WR, 2 Sanchez worked out with the guy and right now it would seem as if Jax is going to select Sanchez.
Andre Smith in the 1st – (Future Pro-Bowler)
Rashad Johnson in the 2nd (HUGE UPGRADE over Goldson)
Deon Butler in the 3rd (The guy has Above average everything, including run-blocking)

Let the boys compete.
Depending on who has a better training camp, I could see either Harrelson or Lawson starting. Also, you can make the #2 a situational sub. Say Lawson starts, since Peppers would automatically be the “pass rushing” OLB, you could bring in Harrelson in obvious pass rush situations. I don’t know, but I think it would be a dilemma I’d welcome.

You don't....
… give up a first and third for someone who doesn’t start, especially someone of Peppers’ age who doesn’t have much time left.
Peppers isn’t worth what you’re going to have to give up and pay to get him…and I think Rashad Johnson is worth a serious look in round two or three
Not worth it
I wouldnt give up that for peppers …..
I am a big SEC guy… that being said i dont think rashad johnson is the answer. He likes to come up and hit and that is great but it makes his cover skills suffer. We need a cover guy at free since we already have the run stop guy in Michael lewis. We could use a back up for lewis but not in the 2nd. I say we take william moore in the second… he could play either Free or strong. If he beats out Goldson then awesome….. if not he can sit and learn Strong.
salary cap
I’m pretty sure Peppers would put the Niners over the cap when you add in 2nd-4th round draft picks.
Rays in '08.... Desmond Jennings - the breakout continues.....
Really?
I’m pretty sure they probably have close to $20M in cap space, and the rookie pool for them will probably be close to $12M if they keep the first round pick. Considering the deal would send away the first rounder, that would leave over $10M for Peppers, of which he probably won’t take all of.
This is...
… not to say I want Peppers, however. I don’t think the guy fits in SF.
Peppers salary
I thought he was at $16M now. If not, then my mistake.

I'm not entirely sure...
… but I do believe that is somewhat high for someone who will be trying out for a new position. If the 49ers trade for him, they will likely sign him to a real contract (rather than let him play out that franchise one), which will probably be more reasonable in terms of cap hit.
If the 49ers can’t do that, then they definitely shouldn’t acquire him. That’s entirely too much to pay for someone who doesn’t even fit your scheme, really.
Too much
I like Peppers but it is too late in his career to make a switch to a 3-4 OLB. Maybe 3 years ago it would have been worth it get him and converting him into a different system. He is aging and is expensive. When you have a team on the rise you cannot make huge signings of free agents because when your young players are pro bowlers and they want a huge contract you can’t give it to them because you signed some older player. I think that is the 49ers didn’t make any huge signings in the offseason. If Parys Haralson has a great season he will want a beefy contact. So you have to anticipate who will develop into a star so you won’t screw yourself over with cap. I hope that make senses.
