2009 SBN NFL Mock Draft: 2nd round mock pick up
The Jay Cutler trade caused a restart from the former Bears pick. So, the 49ers are now on the clock, with a pick due 9am pacific tomorrow (Thursday) morning. We can't get a ton of feedback in the next 14 hours, but I wanted to make sure and get some feedback before submitting a pick. Remember, we selected Michael Oher in the first round so we're not really looking for an offensive lineman.
I've posted the picks to date after the jump so Danny's article doesn't drop too far down. I've posted the second round picks at the top just so you can see who went recently (including, unfortunately, our boy Ron Brace). Any insight is welcome.

well.
I’d go Phil Loadholt if we didn’t take Oher in the 1st (exactly why going OT in the first is a likely mistake).
As of now, I’d rank the options:
1 OG Herman Johnson, LSU
2 CB Alphonso Smith, Wake Forest
3 DE Larry English, Northern Illinois
4 FS Rashad Johnson, Alabama
5 WR Kenny Britt, Rutgers
Rays in '08.... Desmond Jennings - the breakout continues.....
Alphonso Smith would be a great pick up in the second
Larry English was taken at 19
Other possibilities
Robert Ayers
Jarron Gilbert
Sherrod Martin
Lawrence Sidbury
This is why it's a mock draft
Because crazy things happen like a guy rated 93 by Scouts inc. is still on the board.
Ayers would UNDOUBTEDLY be the pick.
Throwback unis? Yes. Throwback afros? YES!
Ayers playing where exactly?
Ayers is a 4-3 DE, not a 3-4 DE. He also isn’t versatile enough to play OLB.

first round
Yea, if we could trade picks I would have tried to move the pick instead of settling on an OT….Or maybe I should’ve gone with Jenkins or Maybin….always second guessing.

I'd be intruiged by Kenny Britt
I’d be surprised if he’s still on the board here
Doesn't Lomabardi have us taking Ayers @ #10?
I don’t know how accurate this thing will end up being, but if Lombardi nails this one I will constantly be wondering if he would have fallen to us at #42. Lombardi has got to be off his rocker, or he thinks McCloughan is.
I would really like us to trade down in the 1st (the Jets are the best bet, if Sanchez still available) pick up another second in that deal and package a 2nd and a 3rd to move back into the late first round. I would think we would have some options at 17 and I would be fine with BPA (Jeremy Maclin is still available at 17 in this mock), get Brace in the late first, and Loadholt in the second (assuming we do not draft an OT at 17) Granted, some things would have to go our way, but I don’t think we would be in a bad position if something didn’t go work out after making the initial trade from #10. Maclin, Brace, and Loadholt! I don’t think we could hope for much better than that. It’s a long shot…but fun to think about.
Trade up
The Niners would be smart to trade their second rounder and a future late round pick for an additional first round pick if another team would go for it. With the 10th pick already, they should aim for another top 15 spot, probably 11-15.
They need to either go OL, DE or DT, DE.

Smith > Davis
I’ve seen both play and I’d take Smith.

I agree Rashad Johnson
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.
1. Rashad Johnson
2. Jay Freeman (As trade bait)
3. Robert Ayers
4. Ramses Barden

Is Ramses now being rated that high?
Last I heard he was anywhere from late 2nd to early 4th. I would take him at this spot but I think most people would say it’s a bit high.
2nd round
1. Kenny Britt WR Rutgers – gives us a good upside WR
2. Asher Allen CB Georgia – fluid CB
3. Shonn Green RB Iowa – although this would be a bit high, still he’de be a good fit
Cody Brown,OLB, Connecticut
Cody Brown,OLB, Connecticut 6-2, 244
40 time :4.60 Vertical: 36.5
solid 3-4 OLB played DE in college strong explosive 4.60 speed pass rusher!!
He's quick...
… but that’s about all there is to him. He seems a tad small, which wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but he also supposedly plays small. He isn’t very physical and isn’t good against the run. I don’t know if that’s what the 49ers are looking for, per se. He sounds a lot like Manny Lawson (except Lawson’s measured times were quite a bit better).
We're going with Kenny Britt
We got a lot of suggestions, but the most consensus seems to be around Britt, and I certainly like me a wide receiver.
Is Kenny Britt slow?
b/c ESPN makes it sound like he is. He also has “off the field issues” and he’s cocky, which I don’t mind in a WR but I wonder how he and Singletary would get along.
“Isn’t fast enough to consistently run past NFL corners. More of a long-strider that builds speed as he goes. Does seem to be deceptive once he reaches top gear but it takes him a while to get there, which doesn’t always translate to the NFL game. He competes well for the jump ball and will make some plays down the sideline when he doesn’t get slowed down at the line of scrimmage… Strong open field runner that fights for yards after contact. Lacks elite elusiveness and isn’t going to make many defenders miss in space. Takes too long to reach top-end speed and isn’t much of a threat to turn a catch underneath into a long gain.”
“2008: Rutgers suspends Britt for Morgan State game for an undisclosed violation of team policy. Scouts have serious concerns regarding his maturity, work ethic and practice habits. Scouts who have interviewed him have described him to us as ‘arrogant’ and having ‘an inflated opinion of his skills’.”
Yikes!
Josh Freeman and Kenny Britt are still available? Either one would be fine but neither one would be of immediate help IMO. Alphonso Smith is also a possibility here but I’m not sold on him as a NFL CB.
