When and why did you become a 9ers fan?

So I thought this would be an interesting idea. It seems we have posters from all over the country on this site, which leads me to wonder how we all came to be 49er fans. I will start things off.

I was 10 years old and my family went over to my grandparent's house for a Superbowl party (giving away my age a bit). When we got there, my grandpa said if we were going to watch the game, we had to pick a team. I had never watched a football game, as my parents aren't fans, I didn't know a thing about it. The choices were San Fran and Denver. I picked the 49ers. No idea why, just random chance. Rooted for them ever since. Now I shudder to think how close I was to becoming a Broncos fan. Subsequently I decided to root for the SF Giants too, that next summer (my first year in little league and the first time I took interest in baseball. I don't really care for the NBA very much, though I use to root for the Bulls because my sister did. Hockey? I'm from Arkansas.

So, when and why did you start rooting for the 49ers?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

i’ve been a niner fan since i was around 4 or so because my family is pretty big on football my entire family is niner fans except my grandpa. i guess the reason they are my favorite team is because i group up in a family that followed them strongly and i just went the same way they did.

I honestly can't remember

I have no real reason to be a 49er fan. I was 5 when they won their last Superbowl but I don’t remember paying attention to football until the Packers-Patriots Superbowl. I do, however, remember always rooting for the 49ers so I think them winning the Superbowl has something to do with it even if I don’t remember. I’m from Southern California and my family used to have Rams season tickets but we hate them now and I don’t really have a “home” team to root for so I root for the 49ers.

My story is pretty much the same.

I was 6 when they won the superbowl, I remember it vaguely.

The first superbowl I remember actually watching entirely was the Pats/Packers superbowl.

Since 87

Growing up in Iowa, a team really isn’t something you see in person often. Unless of course you like the Bears. Normally liking the Bears ties in the Cubs. I grew up with a lot of people who rooted for the Bears, then came the 85 Superbowl Shuffle. At that time I began watching Football and vowed to never like the Bears. I was watching them play the 49ers on Monday night, I seen the helmet and was mesmarized then I seen Jerry Rice and Joe Montana and the Bears get blown out. I forget the score but my whole class was mad they had 0 and I had found my first and only NFL team!!

I started watching football after the 1994 season

That was when my dad egged on Young and told me Montana was king. I guess I followed the 49ers then just to get back at my dad.

But it wasn’t until 1998 did I really commit to the team. In fact, I just wrote a piece about it right here

Montana to Taylor for the win!

I grew up in San Jose so I’ve always been a 49er fan. My first memory of the 49ers was at a super bowl party with my parents. The 49ers were playing the Bengales (the 2nd time) and were losing with minutes to go. Montana marched the 9ers down the field and hit John Taylor in the endzone. Best super bowl ever. The second best was watching the Giants sack the [site decoreum] out of Brady for 4 quaters.

Same here..

I was 7 at the time and watched the same game… I was living in San Jose at the time too!! I think the heart that translated from that win is what won me over… It was the first game I ever watched and only team I will ever root for.

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

Sometime when I was a child in the early 80s

My dad was a Cowboys fan, and I purposely rooted for the team he couldn’t stand. Half-hearted fan until the late 90s/early 00s, when I moved out and actually had access to non local broadcasts and could keep up beyond highlights and box scores.

My grand pa who has season tickets at kezar.. told me I should be a 49er fan.. during the NFC title game against Too tall jones and the Dallas Cowboys..

Towards the end, in that game they were losing to the cowboys 20-27.. and I told my grand-pa.. "ok if they win.. I will be a 49ers fan.. you can imagine how surprised we both were.. and yes we still talk football.. he is 92.. BTW he thought Nolan was a “candy-ass”.

From Lions to 49ers.

Grew up in Detroit and loved the Lions. Its hard to believe not, but when I was in High School (class of 57) the Lions were a championship team: Boby Lane, Doak Walker, Leon Hart, etc. Moved to CA where my children were born. They converted me to the 49ers in the early 80s. The Lions are still my "B" Team and I still root for the Pistons, Red Wings, Tigers, Michigan and Michigan State, but the 49ers have been my #1 sports team for the last 25+ years. I was converted just in time for the Montana/Walsh years. Actually, they were a big part of draw. Walsh was pure CLASS!!

Growing up , my father was a huge Raiders fan, so naturally me and my brother would root for them too. Well, my brother bought Madden 2003 for Xbox, and when we would play eachother, he would always be the Raiders. I didn’t want to be the same team as him, so I chose the first California-based (because thats where i was born) team that I saw, which was the 49ers. I dominated too, Mike Rumph was my boy.

Been a fan since 1988

Started getting into football around 87, my dad was a Bears fan so I was too, I didn’t really understand football, being only 5 at the time and not having seen many games outside of the SB’s. When the 88 season started I decided that I loved football and that I wanted to pick my own team to root for. So I sat down one day, turned on the tv and watched as Steve Young threw a 10 yard slant to Jerry Rice who then turned it into a 60 yard dash to the end zone. Needless to say I found my team

Fandom

Well, I grew up in Las Vegas in the 80s without a real football team to cheer for. I had to pick somebody and it was easy to pick the 49ers. I never felt drawn to the East Coast teams that were playing well then (Giants/Redskins). I picked the 49ers and have been a fan ever since. Even though I knew I was a real fan, I (and most other fans who became 49ers fans in the 80s) probably make my bones with the team until 1999/2000 when they went 4-12 and 6-10. And anybody who remained a fan through the Erickson years is probably a legit fan.

But its also because the niners, even during the yorks reign of poor management, never have had too many bad guys and have never been known as a trashtallking team with rude fans. Classy organization, classy fans, classy players. Thats why we’ve won 5 superbowls.

49ers to Chiefs back to the 49ers?

I was born in august 1984, so the 49ers were starting there preseason for the championship year. I know as a baby my family was watching the 49ers while i was in my crib. In 90 my dad saved a sf chronicle newspaper about the 49ers beating the broncos and I was hooked on the 49ers. My dad also brought me a paper plate with Dwight Clarks signature. I watched the 49ers every sunday with my father. I remember being angry when they lost a game. The year Joe Montana was traded to chiefs I remember being so angry at the 49ers. I actually hated them. I started following the chiefs that year and rooted for the chiefs when they beat SF that year. Joe Montana retired then I stopped watching football altogether. Around 2001 I watched the 49ers play the greatest game I have ever seen. The wild card game against the New York Giants. I’ve been hooked on the 49ers ever since and I am tired of being dissapointed every year. I am a die hard fan now and now that I am older I will never stop watching my team. You cant blame me as a youth to switch teams. I am sure there are Chicago Bulls fans out there who were fans when they were winning and now dont like them anymore. I will probably cry the day we win another super bowl.

When I became a Niner Fan

Have been a fan since the early 70’s when John Brodie and company were making noises like a football team under Dick Nolan. I remember the old rivalry between the Rams and the Niners. I had never had a chance to see a game live only on TV.

When they went down hill in late 70’s I left football behind for a while and got into watching racing. I used to go with a bunch of friends down to Laguna Seca in Monterey.I say a lot of good racing.

Later a job change brought me into contact with some guys who had season tickets for the Niners and I had a chance to see a game live for the first time during preseason. The following year I got tickets for the whole year in section 51 for $120 for the complete package ($12 per game). The year 1981 and I was fortunate enough to see the whole saga unfold right before my eye’s including "The Catch". As the niners became the dominant team in the NFL the ticket prices rose so that by 1985 the season package rose to $360 and being a family man with kids to support I had to let them go however I am now will remain a “DIE HARD NINER FAN”

Niner Fan Since Birth

There isn’t one moment that I can point to and say this is when I became a 49ers fan. You could accurately say that I was born a 49ers fan because both my Mom and Grandpa were 49ers fans. I grew up watching games with them (and my brother) and have been hooked since. I guess it helps that my adolescence was during the 1980’s and I grew up watching Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, Roger Craig, Steve Young, etc. etc.

I had a really silly reason for becoming a Niners fan... but I have yet to regret it

I’m from Germany, and I only developed an interest in football because I bought a game compilation from Accolade for my C64 that included the great “4th & Inches” back in the early 1990s. Although I didn’t know anything about football, it seemed to be a really cool game, and i couldn’t believe my luck when I found out that there was a football club in the neighboring town that was trying to establish a junior team (football in Germany, like sports in general, is not mainly school-based as it is in the U.S.).

So I started playing football without ever having heard of any NFL teams. My teammates, of course, were better informed than I was and had their favorite teams they were following. After a year or two, I decided that it was time for me to pick a team to root for. Not knowing sh*t, I just looked at the NFL’s team logos… and found one that had my initials in it! I knew right away this would be my team. There was an upcoming game against Dallas, and we had a Cowboys fan on our team. Without having an idea if any of those two teams was any good, I offered him a bet for a crate of beer – and won. Two weeks later, my newfound favorite team won SB XXIX.

Things had been going downhill slowly but steadily since then, but I kept feeding off that great start. And the playoff game against the Giants in January 2003 was enough to re-energize me for years to come. Right now, I’m really excited for our team to take the next step and reclaim its place among the NFL’s elite.

As for other sports, Im not all that enthusiastic. I like the Blackhakws because I think they have a cool logo and because I have friends in the Chicago area. I root for the Mets and Yankees (yes, believe it) because I like the idea of a “subway series”. And I used to follow the Pacers and SuperSonics when Schrempf was there, and now I follow the Mavs because of Nowitzki.

To me, they were just bandwagon fans because they had been winning the few years prior. Well I have been in the Military for over 20 years now and have always pulled for the niners! It was Jerry Rice on the cover after he won his MVP in Super Bowl 23. i read the entire article and when the broncos and niners played in the super bowl next year i was still on the fence. But after the huge blowout i jumped whole heartedly on the bandwagon and remeber fondly wearing my niners starter jacket. That Winning Season

I was a foreign student from Indonesia, I came to the Bay Area back in ‘89; I was a soccer fan and didn’t fancy or understand American Football at all, but it all changed when I saw Joe Montana’s amazing comeback and John Taylor’s unbelievable TD run against the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football back in ’89

I had the privilige to arrive during the Niners winning season when they eventually thrashed the Denver Broncos 55-10 in the Superbowl. To me, that season was the perfect introduction for a new fan like me.

I am a lifelong Niners fan since then, I am now back in Indonesia and I still follow them to this day. Go Niners!

I then became very much intrigued by them. I then learned how Football was played by my dad, because he overheard me asking my friend on the phone. Then luckily, the very first full year altogether I followed the 49ers/NFL, the 49ers won the title. They’ve stuck with me ever since.

Faithful since 1980!

I was 5 years old! Living in Mexico City and the only sport that we most watched, played, and practiced was soccer, I wanted to play something more physical so one day while watching TV and changing channels, I saw my first football game it was the 49ers and the Saint December 7 1980 and I saw the Niners come from behind to beat the Saints 38-35 after being down 35-7! Their record at the end of that season was 6-10, but I was not looking at the record like some people do, I saw their heart!

Becoming a Niner fan

This was easy. I was almost 4 years old and my dad walked me across Fulton Street to Golden Gate Park and we went to the Polo Field where San Francisco’s new professional football team, the 49ers were practicing. I saw red jerseys and was hooked for life. Waited 35 years for our first Super Bowl and learned one of life’s great lessons: patience. The best part of growing up at that time is that now I have seen every 49er team, player and coach in history. I guess that makes me one of a rare breed. Go Niners.

Since '93

Been a 49er fan since 1993. I was about 10 yrs old then and I caught a nationally televised game. I was never really into football during that time – I was more into Yankees baseball and basketball but as soon as I watched Steve Young and the gang, I became an instant fan of not only the 49ers, but also of football. I fell in love with the game so much that subsequently played football throughout Jr. high and High school. Now not a day goes by that I don’t stop by this site to catch up on Niner news.

Niners fan since...

1992-1993 Playoffs. I was young and had been a Bengals fan. They’d make me cry when they lost, so I switched my allegiances. I went with the 49ers for reasons unbeknownst to me. However, I vividly remember it being the year the Bills made the second-half comeback against the Oilers. We lost to the Cowboys that year… and the next. The next year, that first-quarter pick by Eric Davis in the NFC Title Game… whoot! Still love thinking about that. One of the greatest starts to a game, ever. I wish I’d gotten in on the Montana years, however.

I was once a 49er's fan

Don’t just label me as a bandwagon jumper but, I was 8 years old and just migrated here from Fiji so, my Uncle and cousin who lived in San Fran were 9er’s fans and still are. A few years later I had moved to Stockton where I live today and became a Raider fan there, along with my other cousin and have been a Raider fan there on out and don’t expect to switch Actually I hope playing for the Raiders someday. I’m a freshman now so maybe 2015 NFL Draft First Overall pick. Dreams we all have them but, I’ma make mines into Reality.

Amazing, Jamarcus Russell hands off to McFadden who pitches it back to Russell who finds Darrius Heyward Bey in the Middle of the Field wide open 30, 20,10,5 Touchdown Raiders! Amazing. This telecast is Brought to you by Cable.

I’m brand new to the site. It’s good to be here. Look forward to talking Niners with you guys. I became a niner long ago, long as i can remember. I grew up and still live in Northeast Ohio, so it was either the Browns or the Steelers as far as the demographic goes, but i chose the niners. I can vaguely remember watching them on tv, i remember liking the red and gold uni’s, then the rest is history!

Goes back to ’77, first game Dad took me too. Took the boat over from Marin and grabbed the bus to the stick. Saw the Seattle Seahawks (preseason I think?) been on board ever since.

3/22/84

Since day 1. Born and raised in the bay. Obviously I didn’t know they existed for a couple years but it was never a choice, the Morabitos are distant relatives and Grandma definitely made sure I remembered. Ready for our return to glory now.

The day that Al Davis took the Raiders down the 5.

Granted I was about 5 months old at the time, but the move turned my Oakland-raised dad to the red and gold, and I soon followed.

im from baltimore and had limited access to see the 9ers. but when i saw them i was amazed. they were the only football team that inspired me as much as michael jordan did. they still do. ( well the 49er greats still inspire me). it was weird being the only 9er fan growing up in my area, but hey, greatness recognizes greatness! & the 49ers are the greatest franchise in any sport……..nuff said.

Its a bit long but at least I got reasons...

I’m originally from Fairfield, CA. My dad was a big A’s/Niners fan so that was part of the reason. Plus, I remember watching alot of the Niner games growing up and really started getting into them about two or three years before I moved up to Montana. I miss the days of Rice, Young, Hearst, Hanks, B. Young, Brent Jones. I mean I have always been a Niner fan but I didn’t really get into them like the A’s till I was 13.

I use to like the Bulls just for Jordan but I like the Warriors and Kings. Kings more coz I love Sac Town. In fact I lean more towards Sacramento the Golden State. I remember when they played Seattle in the first round and got bounced out.

Got into the Sharks about mid-90’s watching them on that station out of San Jose in my room because it was the only channel I could get. I was probably 8 or 9. But I use to like the Ducks coz of the movie.

A’s I’ve been following as long as I could remember. My biggest memory is going to A’s games with my dad. I loved watching Mark McGwire, Walt Weiss, Terry Steinbach, Dave Stewart and Ricky Henderson. But definitely remember ’89 the most. Thats probably as far back as it goes. Synonmous with the quake.

Like the San Jose Earthquake. I was not happy when the owners moved the team to Houston and took a team that was successful and forced San Jose to essentially rebuild. I use to love Landon Donovan till he left for Germany and come back to play for the Galaxy. I HATE CHIVAS USA AND THE GALAXY.
