Afternoon Niner fans. I need your help.
How's it going everyone? CJF from MileHighReport here. Here's the scoop, we're doing a little offseason project and we all picked teams to analyze for their offseason player and staff changes. We're not limited to staff and team, but I want to get a good start with those two elements first. As I pretty much said, I chose the 49ers because I believe your team's done a lot of great things between 2008 and now. Aside from that, I love researching a guy like Coach Singletary. He's got a lot of good ethics to bring to a team that is a lot closer to playoff contention than people give them credit for. So, 49er fan, what are you most excited about between the 2008 season and now? Why?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Things I’m excited for this season……..
McSling’s first full year as coach…
Hopefully Shaun Hill getting the reigns a full season like he’s deserved for a while now…
the improvement and immortability that is Patrick Willis…
hitting people in the mouf…
the overtaking of this pansy ass of a division…
and of course, Michael mother freaking Crabtree.
MURS for President!!!!!!!
haha nice stuff jtoj
“pansy ass of a division” that’s classic.
If it’s not enough aleady, our division is quite weak as well. Hey, on the bright side, at least the NFC West got to the big game though right?

Things I'm excited for
The installation of a power run game. It seems like the team has talked about the run, but never was about the run. Now, with Sing, the prospect of it coming to fruition is better than ever. If you don’t get your morning Coffee, you’re going to get Gore’d.
A full season of Mike Singletary. We saw what he did in the last half of the season, we know what he wants to do in 2009. Getting a bunch of millionare athletes to beat people up will be fun to watch. Even when the 49ers lose games in 2009, the opponents will look like the ones who lost. That’s physical, with an “F”.
A full season of a QB that won’t turn the ball over every time you get that feeling in your gut that a turnovers coming. Shaun Hill should win the starting gig (or hang on to it), but whichever QB comes out of the competition the winner, will be put in scenarios where forcing the ball is not required. If the O-Line can give the man under center enough time, fumbles will be a non-factor as well. Cue JTO highlights and Benny Hill music.
I think it will be interesting to watch this team led by someone not named Nolan. If the team starts out 2-1, then drops a few games in a row, how is Singletary going to handle it? In the past, Nolan didn’t seem to have much emotion regarding a loss. Singletary already has proved otherwise, in his very first game. To see how the team responds to Singletary in loss will be the most interesting. To see how Singletary himself handles loss will be entertaining, and hopefully effective.
So the best thing to look forward to? A team being lead by a fierce competitor, who wants it just as bad as he wanted it when he played the game. And Michael “Freakin’” Crabtree.
Not just because I love the guy, but also to see how Singletary handles the so called “diva”. Singletary made Vernon Davis cry, just keep that in mind Crabtree, if you are who they say you are (the nay-sayers). Which you aren’t, but if you are, man, look out.

Since the guy has become president, the whole team has turned around. I can’t prove this, but I would like to think he is getting a lot of good advice from his uncle Eddie, and really doing a great job of putting it to use. JTOJ, pretty much nailed the rest. (G/J)
I would like to add, the high hopes for a more solidfied, offensive line, and secondary.

You know...I was pretty up in the air about Nolan being with us
I know he wasn’t exactly a great head coach in SF…but I think he’s going to be alright with us. I’m so glad he’s installing the 3-4 scheme into our defense which needs help so badly.
"It means nothing to throw for 4500 yards, 25 touchdowns, and you dont win" -Brandon Marshall
As long as...
… McDaniels or whomever pulling the personnel strings understands that the 3-4 needs special players to play it. One of the many problems of Nolan’s tenure was that he was forcing the 3-4 on a defense whose personnel seemed to better (or more easily) fit a 4-3. In four years, he failed to produce a 3-4 pass rushing OLB and a 3-4 NT, two of the most important positions in a 3-4.
It’ll definitely be interesting to see what Nolan can do building a defense from the ground up. If I’m not mistaken, he was kind of handed a defense in Baltimore, too.
Nolan
too clever for his own good defensively with us. He thought he could be smart enough to install a system without the players. What ended up was a hybrid 3-4.
as a defensive co-oridinator, he’ll have to do what he’s told. much better to have a Nolan that’s under someone, being instructed.

Lucky
you guys are lucky you play the raiders. They are horrible. They might get worse ever year. No Gibril Wilson for them. Makes their weak defense even weaker. Nnamdi is a beast but you guys have Royal and Scheffler. If Orton starts he’ll do better with actual WRs.

Royal, Scheffler, and Marshall are going to be clutch this year.
It’s widely known McD is engaging a strong running attack, I think the wideouts are going to be so useful for him when defenses shut down the run.

What am I most excited about for the upcoming season? The list can get somewhat long and maybe repetitive, so I’ll just try to keep it down to unique points.
First of all, I’m curious to see how Singletary does as a head coach after having an actual off-season to call his own. The guy, so far, seems to know how to manage the team properly (which is all he needs to do). He seems to trust Manusky enough to give him free reign of the defense, which is something Nolan couldn’t do. Based on everything I’ve read, Singletary also seems to have a whole lot of faith in Jimmy Raye.
Which leads me to my next point. I don’t know if you could call this legitimate “excitement,” as it’s probably more about curiosity. I’m basically curious how the offense will turn out this season. No one really knows what Jimmy Raye brings to the table. All that anyone knows is speculation based on his previous (pretty much miserable) stints as “coordinator” where he was pretty much a puppet to the head coach AND what Singletary has laid out as his “vision” for the offense. A lot of fans are envisioning a dominant “power” running game, and I could definitely see that happening. The 49ers have tried this approach in past seasons and the offense continually ranked at the bottom of the league. I think people are more optimistic this season about the offense because the team actually has WR talent, now, even if it is only potential. Also, there is a very strong likelihood that Shaun Hill will finally get to start the season at QB. While I’m still one of the few people that believe Alex Smith can turn his career into something useful, I definitely believe that Hill (unless Smith experiences an absolute miracle) is the 49ers’ best option if they want to win.
Before the comment gets too long, I’ll just close with a list of players I’m excited about.
Frank Gore: He may finally now have a back that can spell him effectively. While I understand that many fans feel that the team reached for Coffee, the kid has grown on me. He seems like another Frank Gore, minus maybe the explosiveness in hitting the hole.
Josh Morgan: I think he could very well be the team’s second best WR by the end of the season. If he can’t unseat Brandon Jones for at least the #3 spot by the end of the season, something either went terribly wrong for Morgan or Jones blew up.
Patrick Willis: While the world pretty much knows what to expect from Willis, he’s still an exciting player to watch. I look forward to his performances, even if he turns in pretty much the same results week-in and week-out.
Michael Crabtree: I think he may be the best player the 49ers could have drafted for Shaun Hill. Based on his work portfolio from college, he seems to be a player who knows how to not only run routes, but maybe even understand how to split zones. It is said that Shaun Hill lacks the luxury of a deep arm, but having a WR like Crabtree may actually not require him to have one. Aside from how he seems to fit with Hill, I’m also extremely excited to see what he does with the ball after the catch.
I’ll leave it at that for now.

I’d say this is exactly what the majority of us are most excited about. That and watching Patrick Willis continue to light up opposing skill position players. Crabtree and Willis are probably the most exciting pair of 49ers players since Owens and Peterson.
Thing A
I'm pretty sure.
Of course, as with everything else I post, I could be wrong.
I realize my response it longer than your post, but what the heck, I need to hone my writing skills
So, I will throw you a bone.
I’m most excited because it’s a fact that Mike Singletary will not take crap from players: see game where he kicked Vernon Davis off the field.
Some players may not like his style, other players will buy into, and the more players that buy into the merrier.
This team is stacked with players that suit Mike Singletary’s fancy. At least in my opinion, obviously, I don’t actually know what Coach is thinking.
We have Nate Clements, and the Crafty Walt Harris in the secondary. We got the hard hitting Michael Lewis, plus other young talent at safety.
The linebackers consist of Patrick Willis, Takeo Spikes, Ulbrich and others.
We have made some changes, you can search them quickly with the search engine. I won’t do research for free.
But if you want some more of my observations then keep on trucking.
And speaking of trucking.
Justin Smith is a badass mother-trucker. And he will eat you alive if you fall asleep in his presence. He is our defensive line leader. He has some talent to work with and we will see what happens with Balmer, Sopoaga, and the new guys.
The offense is in decent shape.
I’m convinced that Shaun "Sugar" Hill can be the man. He is scrawny, he is scraggly, and he might be growing a mullet. But you have to love him.
The 49ers have a good group to throw to and I’m not just talking about the receivers. I mean, we do have Josh Morgan, Jason Hill, Isaac Bruce, and the rookie Crabtree who may be special, at the position.
We have Vernon Davis at tight end, plus some new guy named Bear.
(Vernon Davis should go ahead and play running back.)
More important reasons to be excited/optimistic about 2009, is Franklin Gore. Yes sir.
Moran Norris is back. Yes sir.
Mike Singletary is head ball Coach.
Tom Rathman is back with the team.
Life is good.
Moran Norris is back. Yes sir….
Tom Rathman is back with the team
Two things that haven’t been talked about much in the shadow of Crabtree/Singletary, but I’m excited about both those things too.

Pretty Much everything
I have liked just about everything that has happened this offseason. I didn’t really like the Brandon Jones FA signing but whatever. We gots some weapons for Hill/Smith. Raye isn’t a flashy type of guy but I hope he can get the job done by the end of the day. Singletary has a full season in his hands and I hope he can fire this guys up. I have a question for you Calijoefornia. What do you think about your offseason? They should of keep Shanahan. How do you feel about how your team did?
In Shaun Hill will trust
Where do I start
Martz is gone, Raye is in, singletary is in and Crabtree is here. The RB we drafted is a good addition as well as M Smith. I like the focus that’s apparent in what I’m reading adn the cardinals are falling apart they lost more than they gained so, let’s go niners
M. S. #50
How did the Broncos do?
Well, I’ll tell you how I think they did. I’ll keep it as quick as I can but here goes. First off, a lot of people are bashing McDaniels and the new regime for not going all defense in the draft. The bottom line is this, if you draft for need, you’re always going to be one step behind. If you draft based on the best available, you can at least have a shot. Based on that theory, McDaniels did a hell of a job in the draft. Knowshon Moreno brought something to Denver’s running game that we haven’t had since Terrell Davis in 98, and that’s solidarity.
Long past are the days of Denver being a RB’s haven, where any guy can be plugged in and instantly gains 1000 yards at least. Those days are over, it’s time to have a back we can count on for years to come, a Tomlinson figure, if you will. We finally have one in KMo and I believe he will be a damn good back in the NFL, most specifically, with our scheme.
As for the defense and “not being fixed”, How do you cut 7 of the 11 starters within 2 weeks and NOT shake things up? The fact is McDaniels didn’t exactly do the most popular thing when it came to the draft, which is why he was bashed for taking KMo at 12, and such.
And I’m sure a million of you are thinking it, so I’ll nip it in the butt now. I’ve been in the Cutler sh*tstorm since it all started to go down in March. Here’s my ideas on it, you can’t ignore the calls of your boss and expect to keep your job right? Right. Well Jay Cutler acting like a cry baby because McDaniels listened to offers initiated by other teams . Jay Cutler has a large ego, thanks to Shanahan fluffing his ego for 3 years, and when a guy like McDaniels comes in with his no bull approach (you can appreciate that, Singletary is YOUR coach), Jay Cutler got his panties all ruffled up. The situation, as I saw it unfold through my orange colored sunglasses, is that you can’t just expect to have your job next year. No one is safe from being benched, and Cutler knew that. He didn’t like that he actually had to prove himself to a new coach who really wasn’t THAT impressed by a guy who’s career record is 17-20. Long story short, Jay Cutler is NOT Tom Brady. Although it can be debated whether Brady is the best quarterback ever or not, one can’t deny the fact that he’s a damn good ball player. He’s as smart as they come, and he’s got the rings to prove his worth. Ironically enough, even Tom Brady knew he had to show up every day and work for his spot on the field because McDaniels and Belichick do NOT tolerate half-assers, regardless of thier achievements. Tom made it known that McDaniels had no problem putting him in his place when he needed it. That’s just something Cutler couldn’t handle. It’s fair to assume that while Cutler has incredible talent, his intangibles are terrible. A large part of his success was due to the fact that he had serious weapons downfield in Marshall, Royal, Graham, Scheffler and even Peyton Hillis.
Those guys are half the reason Jay has the stats he does for the season. Just like my signature says, and I quote BMarsh. “It means nothing to throw for 4500 yards and 25 touchdowns, and you don’t win”
Jay Cutler is a great player, but ultimately he is more of a headache than a blessing. It really irks me to see everyone call him our “former franchise quarterback”. He was never franchise. Joe Montana was franchise, John Elway was franchise. Jay Cutler is NOT franchise.
"It means nothing to throw for 4500 yards, 25 touchdowns, and you dont win" -Brandon Marshall
That's really drinking the Koolaid
I dunno if you’ve followed the Belichick coaching tree but it hasn’t produced jack squat . . . unless you want to count lip service to the Patriot way while the head coach completely mismanages talent.

I’d be nice because I always liked John Elway, the Broncos and their fans but McIdiot just gave Seattle a top 5 pick next year. At least try to keep the buffoonery in your own division.
Well, instead of being downright ignorant about it...
why don’t you read the post, and reply with your thoughts on YOUR team. I’m not the one that brought up the Broncos, I came for the Niners.

interesting way to look at it
Obviously, I didn’t do a lot of looking at the Broncos offseason, I’ve only paid attention to the headline grabs.
Josh McDaniels seems to be the brightest coach from the Belichik tree. In terms of game planning and managing an offense anyway. The Pats missed the playoffs with an 11-5 record, and you can’t say it was because the offense didn’t produce. That offense has been high octane for a while, and while very talented, McDaniels can take credit for catering to what he had (lots).
The way the Cutler situation went down, I mean obviously a Bronco fan may want to bash the guy that’s gone (Cutler). I agree that things shouldn’t be given to anything, but QBs like Cutler don’t grow on trees. If they do, they grow on trees that are hard to find. Maybe a lof of that can be credited to Shanny, but Cutler has a freakin’ cannon.
This was my intial comment on the Cutler trade (here)
Stunning.
I just got home from work, and was floored to see what Denver got in return.
Kyle Orton, 2 1st round picks and a 3rd?
WOW. McDaniels is going to turn Orton into a very good QB, watch. This is the biggest rip-off in the history of trades, and the Redskins won’t even be victim!
Way to go Denver, you sly sons of a bitches.
So I guess I can say I feel McDaniels is clever enough to get maximum value for a guy like Jay Cutler. Even though maybe, he might be worth keeping with those weapons in Denver, especially with Knowshon. Denver had the 12th best rushing attack in the league last year, but Cutler still had to carry the team. Knowshon definitely would help with that burden, but hey, atleast for your sake Kyle Orton will benefit from it.

From an outsider's perspective
Jay Cutler is NOT franchise.
Honestly, I think you guys quit way too early to find out. And just as much as Jay Cutler is NOT (yet) Tom Brady, Joe Montana or John Elway, McDaniel is NOT Bill Belichick, Bill Walsh, or even Mike Shanahan. Cutler is has proven much more as a quarterback than McDaniel has proven as a head coach. Did Cutler act like a bit of a baby? Absolutely, but so did McDaniel. As a fan that grew up watching a team thats had more than its share of franchise quarterbacks and hasn’t had anything even remotely close to a guy like Cutler for close to a decade now (maybe even much longer than that depending on your view of Garcia) I can tell you that a little QB pampering, and by most reports it only would’ve required a little, is more than worth it. In most coach vs. player disagreements I automatically jump to defend the coach, and well before this incident I felt that Cutler was a whiny punk, but I think McDaniel was way out of line here. If within a few months of getting a coaching gig you manage to upset the team’s best player, whether he’s a “franchise” guy or not, and are forced to trade him you had better 1) be certain you are getting a player at least almost as good in return or 2) make sure the guy really would’ve had a negative impact on the team. Remember that John Elway whined his way out of getting drafted by Colts, so its not like he didn’t have a little prima donna in him. Like Cutler, Elway didn’t make his first pro-bowl til age 26 and he still hadn’t led the team to a Super-Bowl, he was flashing a big arm and some very impressive stats…….but isn’t Cutler doing the same thing? Sorry, but I really think McDaniel really screwed you guys on that one.
Thing A
How did the Broncos do?

Hmm, 8-8 record, you had a terrible defense last year, it seemed as if your entire RB corps was on the IR. Again 8-8 because of Jay Cutler, the Broncos had no reason to win any game without Cutler. It may be a long year for the Broncos in 2009, but thanks for giving Seattle your future top 15 1st round pick, the 49ers appreciate it.
Here’s my opinion on my niners.

It's a toss up
between Denver and KC. As in, it could be either team that’s successful this season. Obviously, the Chargers are the team to beat, but KC or Denver could sneak up on them.
I like Devners chances as much as I like KC’s. While Orton may be no Cassel, he’s got some weapons to throw to, and a potentially good running back. It should be an offense that is fun to watch.
KC seems to be lacking talent offensively, but its defense may surprise some people.
Either way, this is too much talk not related to the 49ers.

After reading many of the comments,
I echo the sentiments for the excitement around Singletary with one full off-season and year to work his magic. I also agree with the excitement/curiosity surrounding the “power run” mentality, I think Gore will benefit greatly- as will Shaun Hill, having the defense respect our running abitlity that much more.
Certain players individually that I’m excited to see: Crabtree, Manny Lawson- healthy again, Vernon Davis + Bear Pascoe in the same huddles, Jason Hill in the Slot (big things this year; Hill+Hill=TD), and our new god damn jerseys!
I’m also looking forward to sticking it to the Cardinals, Seachix, and Lambs twice each this year.

Coach Singletary
I beieve coach Singletary’s influence is the single most important ingredient to a superbowl run. I believe we have great players that need some batteries in their backs. I like the offseason aquisitions of moran Norris, and CB Jimmy Williams. We needed Crabtree desperately. We could use a solid #2 WR to make a real tandem ala Jerry Rice John Taylor. Maybe Josh Freeman, or Jason Hill have some potential there. We’ll see. Alex Boone will be an ancor sooner than projected. He was solid for OSU although slow footed, he can compliment what we already have. Scott Mckillop is a hard nosed football player. Singletary is obviously surrounding the team with football players. After all, this is football.
