Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Who will be 49ers top RECeiver this year?

I'd like to think at least 80% of 49ers fans were happy on day one of the NFL Draft. I know I was.. I was explaining to my friends what we needed, and who was left and who I wanted (Crabtree-Jerry Rice fan you think?). Every pick,  was literally more AND MORE, Suspenseful.. I would say it reminded me of the excitement, just short of the 49ers winning the Superbowl, however with a much shorter shelf life.. I'm waiting to restock..

But as much as I want Crabtree to be very successful.. I don't know if I would put my money on him catching the most balls (I would LOVE for him to prove me wrong) This year?

I really think Josh Morgan could really be the workhorse on the receiver squad, and I also think the one to battle him for it will be Isaac bruce. If Crabtree does fall to the #1 slot, he's going to get the #1 guy or a double team, leaving Morgan and Bruce in Single coverage.. Josh Morgan showed amazing gametime ability, and already has a repore with Shaun Hill. However, Bruce's wisdom, and smarts got Shaun out of trouble, a lot of times in 2008. I have to think when Shaun heard Bruce was coming back, he was the most excited.

Yes, I realize I stated that Hill will be behind center at the start of '09. Alex Smith doesn't have a repore with any of the 3, but does with Battle, and Jason Hill, Hill has also been coming along..

Also.. I realize, I didn't mention Zeigler.. sorry I'm pretty sure we're gonna lose this guy, due to the Jones transaction, whom I also didn't mention, he is the biggest question mark of the bunch?

So which one of these guys, do you think is going to be catching the most passes, and do you think any of them will make the pro bowl this year?

Bruce,

simply because he’s still got it. He can still put up big numbers, more so than a lot of the rookies. Also, his smarts, as you said, will help the QB (All three [minus Huard] of whom aren’t that experienced) a lot.
And without a solid or consistent starter at QB, I say none of them makes the Pro Bowl.

by Mr. Nice Guy on May 12, 2009 6:12 PM PDT reply actions

Depends on the QB

I think Hill and Hill’s chemistry is obvious so it depends who get the chance. At Bruce’s age I only look for him to be a player coach and a passing down #3

So lets say..

Hill wins the battle by the very beginning of the preseason, would you change anything?

The excitement..

..from the play dominates the pic.. that play was all Morgan, pro bowl play.. but the one above against a former world championship team, ontop of the clarity and display of body language, it just says.. “I have arrived..” don’t it?

by Josh G and the Shaun Hill band wagon on May 12, 2009 8:47 PM PDT up reply actions

you're right about the excitement

But what makes that an inferior picture? Check out the vert on that guy!

In Singletary we trust.

Oh..

..as far as hops goes, thats got to be #1, I guess I meant overall.. everyone is a different critic, I love your pic too.. how does that ball clear the defenders hands?

It doesn't clear...

… unless Morgan fights for it.

Basically..

definitely not an inferior pic

one of my favorites, it still amazes me that he came down with the ball

I say Bruce

The other teams will be worried about Crabtree and Morgan. Isaac Bruce isn’t as big as a threat as he was 5 or so years ago but he a good possession WR. Im not too sure he it will be though. Also I want Bruce to have a good year because it is probably his last.

In Shaun Hill will trust

by iaalexeeff on May 12, 2009 7:00 PM PDT reply actions

It's got to be Morgan

He seems to be impressing everyone and I think he may be Bruce’s successor….assuming he can make the transition….

by SportsChicken on May 12, 2009 8:20 PM PDT reply actions

I think Morgan, but it all depends

on health. Rookie receivers typically struggle because they pull leg muscles because of all the running. Still, I’ll be interested to see how things/guys shape up (quite literally) in camp.

In Singletary we trust.

Not a rook anymore

He’s in his second year and he should be ready to “break out”

Bruce will top the others

As much as I would love for Josh Morgan or Crabtree (very, very optimistically) I think that Bruce’s experience in the league will make him the top receiver. Quite simply he just has that veteran experience that allows him to get that separation from DB’s no matter how much speed he has lost. He has also been very reliable with sure hands which any QB will be quick to look for when scrambling or in a hurry to throw. I think it will be another injury-free steady season for Bruce, which isn’t bad for us.

Believe me when I say...

The 49ers drafted the best player in the 2009 draft.

The (other) Catch

by 10forTech on May 16, 2009 4:31 PM PDT reply actions

I believe you!

..looks like he could have the most td catches too.. what about pro bowl.. I definitely won;t rule it out, even if he doesn’t have the most catches, TD’s is what it’s all about, I guess it’s just hard getting all three stats, under one post, I could totally see this happening, for the 49ers this year, Bruce most recs, Morgan most yards, Crabtree most td’s or any of the other possibilities, but I have no doubt that we got the best pick in th 2009 draft, it is no question, to me it was meant to be, like .. when I became a 49er fan..
..please post up all the pics you want.. this guy is 49er now..

Most VALUE

We got the most value in the first round….
A top 5 player with the 10th overall selection.

I don’t know about TDs though, I’m pretty sure Frank Gore should lead the team in TDs (receptions and runs)

by SportsChicken on May 16, 2009 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

As long as the TDs get scored it’s all good.

Fantasy Football?

Anybody else drafting Frank Gore in the 1st round?….I know I am!

by SportsChicken on May 16, 2009 11:21 PM PDT reply actions

This is a nice list but . . .

I have no doubt that Crabtree, Morgan and Hill will have excellent seasons. However, the Niners have another weapon that everyone is disregarding. The second half of last season found Singletary playing MIchael Robinson at the backup FB position. Michael caught 17 passes for 202 yards and an average of 11.9 yards per catch in actually about one half of a season. His great leaping catch against the Redskins was instrumental in our pulling out the victory.

We know Robinson is a lead pipe cinch to make the roster. He is our special teams captain, was instrumental in both of Rossum’s TD returns with great blocks, and is the best tackler.

This season could find him as the #2 or #3 RB, but in reality I think his best offensive position will be as the #2 FB. Tom Rathman is his coach and when Tom played, he had a backup named Harry Sydney, an ex college QB who also wore #24 like Michael. Harry threw an option pass to Brent Jones in a 1983 playoff game vs. the Redskins that was critical in that game.

Michael Robinson is better than Harry was. He’s bigger and more versatile and Harry was very good. Look for Rathman to use Michael in the way. He’s a great pass receiver out of the backfied. To compare, last season while Michael was averaging 11.9 yards per catch, Reggie Bush and Brian Westbrook were each averaging a little over 7 yards per catch. Even T.O, a wide receiver, only averaged 3 yards per catch more. Just double his production of last season and Michael will have 34 catches for over 400 yards, and that’s only playing part-time. Michael is a silent weapon that Singletary and Raye will spring this season. Count on it.

Kezarvet

by kezarvet on May 17, 2009 8:18 AM PDT reply actions

Robinson

He’s a third down “option” player…He’s usually unaccounted for and could provide quick first downs….

If they’re going to use him they should try to conceal it as much as possible so defenses don’t pick up on him.

by SportsChicken on May 17, 2009 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I would love to see..

..a late third quarter ‘wildcat’ that was well practice, in all factes, including him throwing the ball, I love that ‘refrigirator perry’ surprise stuff, but it has to be well practiced…

Yo

Anybody here going to the Raider vs 49er’s Preseason game? I will tell you one thing I am not going you have got to be crazy to actually go to those Raider fans. I had a couzin go to a Raider Preseason game and they said it was horrible. The season and preseason fans are different. Preseason is where we get our kill anybody that looks at me image but the season raider fans are much different. So my point is if your going to this game be Careful I’m a Raider fan I would still get my ass kicked over there. Hopefully we will see you in the Playoffs that is if you make it ??JK but, there is no reason neither of us should miss it.
