49ers waive DB Jimmy Williams; Sign S Curtis Taylor to contract

According to Matt Maiocco's Twitter page, the 49ers have waived defensive back Jimmy Williams. The only other confirmation of that is on Rotoworld, but that's based on Maiocco's Tweet.  In addition, the Rotoworld page said, "Williams' weight still wasn't where it needed to be after he signed a "two-year" deal in January. The 25-year-old should get another shot elsewhere."

Whatever the case, that was certainly quick.  I know some folks saw him battling for playing time at safety, but so much for that.  If it's a weight issue maybe the team felt that if he couldn't get his weight down given this "last chance" option, why bother keeping him around?

That opens up some potential playing time for new safety Curtis Taylor.  Maiocco's Twitter also states that Taylor signed a 4-year deal for $1.8M with a $59,880 signing bonus.

Much more to come on this already busy first day of OTAs.

sadly

Yeah probably. As long as Roman doesn’t start then I don’t care if he is still here.

I thought they parted ways with Roman already… What’d I miss?

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

roman

He was given permission to seek a trade. Nobody has taken him up on that offer.

That’s kind of disappointing.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

by JRPhillips on May 18, 2009 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

why would it mean they have to keep roman?

they can still go two deep at each safety position without roman or jimmy eat williams.

SS – Michael Lewis – Reggie Smith
FS – Dashon Goldson – Curtis Taylor

we dont need more than 4 safeties. might as well save the roster spot for another position if the talent isnt there.

I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.

That's assuming...

… Singletary will choose Taylor over Roman. Singletary said yesterday that Roman is (and will continue to be) welcome on his team.

by sfgfan on May 19, 2009 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have to assume...

… Singletary would choose one of his own regime’s draft picks over a Nolan-era holdover that he already demoted before camp even started.

I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.

If...

… the draft pick were higher, sure. If the draft pick was a seventh rounder that who is also eligible for the PS, it makes it a little more difficult to assume that.

I thought it was funny how excited people were about him

his track record meant I wasn’t willing to envision him playing for us until it actually happened.

That being said, if he got his weight down and resigned I’d be happy to welcome him back

I wasn't even aware Jimmy Williams was still on the team

I always play ESPN 2k5 on my xbox (T.O. as an Eagle on the cover). Jimmy Williams is our kick/punt returner in that game.

I honestly don’t really play video games. I bought an xbox just for when guests come over. I’ve tried others, but I’m just not into it. Ever since 2004, I’ve only been playing my ESPN 2k5.

Williams

Maybe his lack of slimming down led Singletary and McCloughan to believe he wasn’t motivated enough to be here? In any case, it is definitely a shock. I’m interested to see what other team is going to give him a shot.

by sfgfan on May 18, 2009 11:37 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

maybe

Curtis Taylor is 6’ 3" as well as Jimmy Williams. Taylor is 204 lbs and Williams is 220. Maybe they thought Taylor would be a better FS. But it seems to me that Williams could play SS. I’m not sure though.

strong safety

Jimmy Williams was going to be competing for playing time at strong safety and Taylor is going to play at free safety. So you’re correct on that.

Physically...

… he has the speed of one of the faster corners in the league (if I’m not mistaken, and if he still indeed has that speed, of course), but the size of a SS playing FS. Based on physical measurements alone he had the makings of a freakish FS. Of course, there are tons of other factors that have to be taken into account, too, though.

Maybe they were making an example of him?

We’ve all discussed how Singletary’s unafraid of difficult personalities and reclamation projects. We all remember what he did to Vernon Davis on that fateful day. While going after players who have had difficulties elsewhere provides an opportunity to increase our talent level, the downside is a player can be unruly and eventually the team might feel those negative qualities that led to the player being available in the first place.

Perhaps by cutting Williams so early into the offseason program Singletary is sending a message that while he’s willing to give guys opportunities, he’s unwilling to help a help player who refuses to help himself? Guys have to get in line and do what’s needed of them to help the team, or they’ll be cut.

Setting the tone – simple as that.

Curtis Taylor

Glad to see him get a 4 year deal. I know, 7th rounders and 4th round deals don’t always go hand and hand, but I think the team feels Taylor will be a good enough project, and he’ll be developed in time for the team to extend him and reward him. It’s what the Niners have been doing, and frankly, I like that business style a lot better than FA splashing.

I mean, yes, it’s nice to see that big name acquisition, but I prefer a team to build from the ground up. Obviously, this team has signed some big flashy free agents, but for the most part, our blocks came from the draft. Frank Gore was drafted in round 3, and was extended before his rookie deal expired, and rewarded handsomely. Parys Haralson was treated the same way. Obviously guys drafted in round 1 are expected to live up to the big money immediately, and I’m cool with that. However, the team stills wants to extend Willis before his rookie deal expires.

I love the way the team is building. Big props for Nolan for gutting the entire football operations, and even bigger props to the guys Nolan brought here. At the end of the day, Mike Nolan would make a pretty decent team President for an organization one day. Let’s not talk about his coaching though.

4th round

meant to say 4 year not 4th round.

At the end of the day, Mike Nolan would make a pretty decent team President for an organization one day.

If he continues to fail at coaching though, it’ll be difficult to find a front office willing to give him a chance to run the team as a “Team President.” This is not to mention his PR skills, especially during the Smith debacle, are somewhat lacking.

It’ll definitely be interesting to see how he deals with building his own defense with interference from a head coach.

by sfgfan on May 18, 2009 2:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

PR Skills

are rather lacking, indeed. However, if you look at the PR team now, they can make anyone media friendly (see: State of the Franchise). Don’t get me wrong, I think our front office and coach are effective, but the PR is shining. Whether it be Jed York or Andy Dolich, both are doing an excellent job.

And for the record, Mike Nolan would make a pretty decent team Prez, and I did not mean the 49ers. I figured instead of dogging Nolan, I’ll note some positives and probably never mention him again (unless Denver is 32nd or 1st in defense next season).

by Andrew Davidson on May 18, 2009 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting take on Nolan

I’m not sure where I stand but it’s something I hadn’t really thought of. Obviously I think he’s a horrendous coach and terrible at PR, but the people who he brought in I feel have been doing a good job. I suppose he does deserve some credit for that, to be fair.

The guy who I also think deserves some credit is Jed York, who I feel has everyone on the same page for the first time in a while. Love the creation of the team HOF, the weight room and other improvements that he’s investing in, etc. Now if only he can figure out those stadium issues…

by Neon on May 18, 2009 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed

Jed York deserves a solid fist bump for the job he’s doing. The stadium issues need to be figured by the city of San Francisco as well, not just York and the 49ers.

Hopefully, if York can get the team into a state of the art facility, they’ll be “that” team again. As in, hated by all, loved by the Faithful.

4 years is standard

Actually, 4 years is fairly standard for the 49ers and a lot of other NFL teams. They already signed two other picks for four years. It’s just that not a lot of the money is guaranteed so they can cut him without much of a financial hit.

by urnext on May 18, 2009 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

4 years in round 7

I always envisioned 7th round deals to be that of the 3-year variety. Basically because I think agents are pushing for shorter deals, so their guy can hit FA quicker and make up for being a 7th round pick.

I did not mean that a 4 year deal for draft picks is rare, I meant for draft picks in round 7, it doesn’t seem as frequent.

by Andrew Davidson on May 18, 2009 3:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think...

… the 49ers did away with 3-year deals in order to get away from the RFA stuff. I could be wrong, though.

by sfgfan on May 18, 2009 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i'd rather the team

sign the guys to 4 years deals anyway, it gives the team better leverage in extension talks, and keeping players off the market.

by Andrew Davidson on May 18, 2009 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Same

Considering the 49ers extend their young players that they like before they hit free agency (i.e. Gore, Robinson, Haralson, etc.) taking away the RFA period doesn’t really hurt them anyway. It’s not like they wouldn’t want to keep a player that they would tender and another team would want. How many teams actually take advantage of the RFA period and pay other teams draft picks to sign RFAs?

he should be a KR backup or sidekick for “old man” rossum

by big beaner on May 18, 2009 8:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sheets would be a waste of talent to leave on ST

He’s easily our 2nd 3rd Down back since he is familiar with pass protection. Plus as dynamic as he is running he should be number 3 on the depth chart at RB. I figure he can spell Gore on 3rd downs and KR also, but should be considered a RB more than a special teamer.

by Real Deal P Will on May 18, 2009 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm.

Gore is by far the best third down back the 49ers have (in terms of balance of pass protection and pass receiving). It’d be an utter fail to say that a rookie who has yet to see an NFL blitz package can step in and take his place.

I’m afraid that the Sheets love-fest is going to turn into what is now known as the Clayton love-fest. I understand being excited about potential and all that, but the kid hasn’t even touched an NFL field and went undrafted. There are plenty of talented college RBs that don’t make it in the NFL.

Call it a cautionary tale for all of us (yeah, I’m including myself there) who drool over H/W/S numbers. The tale reads like this:
