49ers Sign CB Dre Bly

FOOCH'S UPDATE: Thanks to pwarren85 for posting Maiocco's update: The contract is reportedly for $845,000.  Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

And just like that we've got a new cornerback to replace the injured Walt Harris.  The 49ers just announced the signing of former Bronco, Lion and Ram CB Dre Bly.  There will be a conference call at 5pm today so I'll get the transcript up as soon as it's available. According to Barrows it's a 1-year contract.  We've got some scouting details on Bly here.  For now, here are some of the details from the press release:

“We lost a Pro Bowl caliber player in Walt Harris this week, and we were able to fill that void today with another Pro Bowler in Dré Bly,” said general manager Scot McCloughan. “We added a player with a passion for the game, tremendous productivity and proven durability who knows what it takes to compete at a high level in the NFL. It was important to get Dré in here quickly so that he can get acquainted with our system, our coaches and his new teammates.”

Bly (5-10, 188) enters his 11th season after originally being drafted in the second round (41st overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams out of North Carolina. A two-time Pro Bowler (2003-04), Bly’s 40 interceptions since entering the league in 1999 mark the fourth-highest total among all NFL players, while his 18 forced fumbles are the most among cornerbacks during that span.

Bly most recently spent two seasons as a member of the Denver Broncos, where he led the team with two interceptions in 2008 and five interceptions in 2007. He joined Denver via trade from the Detroit Lions, where he spent four seasons (2003-06) totaling 19 interceptions, 13 forced fumbles and 82 passes defensed. Bly started his career with the St. Louis Rams (1999-2002), helping the club win Super Bowl XXXIV as a rookie and to an appearance in Super Bowl XXXVI in 2001.

The Chesapeake, VA, native has played in 151 games (111 starts) and totaled 538 tackles, 159 passes defensed, 40 interceptions (five returned for touchdowns), 18 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries and four sacks in his career. Bly finished his career at North Carolina as the first player in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference to earn consensus All-America honors three times.

that was quick

I hope he can do good. I guess that means that Walt’s injury is pretty bad.

Can do well. Please don’t hate me, I correct my girlfriend all the time as well =).

Maybe he can do good, also.

My comment was a little tongue-in-cheek

but now that I think about it, helping out is important for us all. I know I need to do more!

I'm a fan of the signing

Not a fan of the Walt Harris injury, but a fan of the Bly signing. Hopefully we can leave the door open for othe FA CBs too, just as added depth.

I like it

I’m kind of surprised that we didn’t bring Rod Hood back in for another visit since we were interested in him early on in free agency and he’s still on the market.

Bly as our #2 CB sounds good to me

Will he win the starting job?

Tarrell Brown already knows the defense and he has more physical skills.

by SportsChicken on May 21, 2009 5:48 PM PDT reply actions

Good question - I think so

Why would the Niners sign him if they didn’t expect him to win the job? I think as long as he’s the player he has been the team will want to start him.

Great, great move by the front office, IMO. They moved quickly and deliberately and got what looks like the best free agent corner on the market.

If you haven’t see Kawakami’s McLovin’ transcript take the time. It’s really well done by both GM and reporter. I think there’s definitely a plan and it seems like everyone’s comfortable with their role in the organization. Are we starting to see a competent Bay Area sports team again? I’ve said too much, I don’t want to jinx it.

one thing i can say about MC (while working at the facility) is that he always showed up to work before anyone else, followed by staley.

conference call sounds good, and he definitely sounds like a vet who will take his new opportunity seriously. even if he doesn’t start having him/bruce around to help the younger guys is a great opportunity for all those involved. now i just want to hear that sheets is beating out coffee as the #2 back.

by pwarren85 on May 21, 2009 5:57 PM PDT reply actions

I think this is a very good signing. One year contracts with a decent possible reward are fine by me.

I’d actually be happier still if they brought in one more corner like this, too.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

steal.

According to a league source, Bly signed a one-year contract for the veteran minimum of $845,000. The deal counts just $460,000 against the 49ers’ 2009 salary cap. —Matt M.

Let’s hope he produces and gives our defense a boost.

This may turn out to be an upgrade.

wow

i don’t see how you can argue with this pick up.

sorry man didn't mean it to sound the way it did

it was supposed to be a reply to pwarren85’s comment about how much Bly’s contract was for. I was just making a general statement that it seems like a great deal and it would be hard for someone to argue that it’s not. Sorry for the confusion. I’m hoping for the best as well. It would be great if he played great this year and was an upgrade, and who knows maybe we end up getting a few decent years out of him as a quality back-up.

I'm excited

more for nostalgia than because I think he’ll be a great player. When I was younger my friend and I used to make out own teams in various football video games and for a few years (while Bly was still in college) he was a player we always made to be on our team and he was always our best player. So I’ve always been a fan. So for that reason alone I’m stoked that he’s a niner.

Good stuff

I live in Colorado, and there are a lot of people around here who dislike Bly. Mostly, though, that’s because they felt he was overpaid for what he brought to the table. At this price, it’s a fantastic addition for us.

Never forget: I am a complete idiot

How'd he look last year?

Obviously the guy’s had an amazing career – I’m curious what he looked like last year?

by Neon on May 21, 2009 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions

you know

when you leave your toast in the toaster for too long, and it gets all burnt and crispy?

that’s how Bly looked at times last year, but the defense he played on was really poor. At age 32, I think Bly still has something left, and for the minimum this is a bargain steal for the 49ers.

Nice signing for you guys

A respectable pick in my opinion a veteran type of cornerback hopefully he doesn’t end up like Deangelo Hall when we signed him straight up garbage but, yeah should help your pass defense.

Amazing, Jamarcus Russell hands off to McFadden who pitches it back to Russell who finds Darrius Heyward Bey in the Middle of the Field wide open 30, 20,10,5 Touchdown Raiders! Amazing. This telecast is Brought to you by Cable.

1 year at under 1 mil

for a guy as good or better than Harris. What’s to complain about?

by shlecko on May 22, 2009 1:48 AM PDT reply actions

This.

That’s a ridiculously good deal for the 49ers. Leaves Bly fighting to get himself a contract worth more next year.

by sfgfan on May 22, 2009 9:38 AM PDT up reply actions

That is exactly what the Raiders did with their signings

Made people prove their contract and want them to prove themselves. Besides Dr,e who else did you guys sign?

I'll see your Bly

and raise you enough money for another FA CB or 2. Can’t beat the price, can’t beat the experience. Now…lets pretend like someone else is hurt and get at least 1 more. Depth For the Win.

by Arkie49er on May 22, 2009 9:12 AM PDT reply actions

I don't think...

… Bly will stop the 49ers from signing another veteran player. They’ll probably try to bring in at least one more guy that can contribute in the sub packages (i.e. nickel/dime/etc).

by sfgfan on May 22, 2009 9:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Good signing
