Who should the Niners pick in the first round, 2010?
If the 49ers do not trade one of our 2010 first round picks, who should we be looking at picking up? ESPN College Football Live was comparing McCoy, Bradford, and Tebow today, and it seems like we are still looking for another defensive beast. It sounds like 2010 is being billed as a "deep" draft class, so might the Niners look at trading some picks to move up or down? Who is on your radar, and how would we get them? This is very early, but I'd like to hear what people are thinking.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

In specific order
Assuming the 49ers have the 15th pick and the Panthers have the 20th
with the
15th (Eric Berry, Terrance Cody, OffensiveTackle)
20th (Offensive Tackle, Jerry Hughes, Jimmy Clausen, Navarro Bowman, Pat Devlin[The next Flacco])

Taylor Mays.

I want to watch him more closely this year
I know he has good playmaking skills but I want to know if he can really cover.
He just plays too deep so it’s hard to see him before the pass is thrown.

Yea, should be an interesting year for Mays
With those superstar LB"s gone from in front of him he is gonna be forced to play closer to the line of scrimmage and have to read plays sooner so he doesn’t get beat deep. I’m also a bit worried about his size, he is a physical freak no doubt but if he gets any bigger he might not have the change of direction to stay at safety. He might be a 4-3 OLB by the time the draft rolls around next year.

Why?
2 INT over the last two seasons. He is not an NFL FS. Mays is just another Roy Williams.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

He broke up a few passes
But he never really got opportunities….
I don’t know how many USC games you watched (I watched them all) but teams rarely went deep on them.
So Mays never really got opportunities to make plays.

I lived in LA the last two years
So I’ve watched my far share of USC games and haven’t seen much from that makes me think he can play FS in the NFL. If he hasn’t had many opportunities to make plays he hasn’t have many opportunities to be exposed as well. He actually reminds me a lot of another great college USC safety, Darnell Bing, who was moved from safety and flopped in the NFL.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

yup
that’s what i heard, all he does is hit… supposedly he can’t cover well. if we had better DBs with better coverage then i say go for him. we could use a dominant hitter along with willis…
by Young Moolah on May 27, 2009 10:54 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Supposedly
You can’t really say he can’t cover because he’s never had the chance.
Teams almost never went deep on the Trojans last year…..and Mays was always off the screen.

Jerry Hughes, OLB from TCU
Ideal size 6’3", 257, made SI’s all-american team as a jr. and dropped the QB 14 times last year.
Morgan breaks through in 2009!
by grantmp on May 22, 2009 1:32 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
why wouldn't we
trade up with our two picks and maybe get a top 5 pick? and then draft a legit qb?!?
by Young Moolah on May 22, 2009 1:40 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Why would we want to?
If the Niners are picking low enough in the draft then Shaun Hill is good enough not to have to force a top 5 pick on a QB. If Shaun Hill isn’t doesn’t play very good the Niners should easily be able to target the last of Bradford, McCoy and LeFevour.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

Mays and McCoy
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Smith to be super so soon.

At this point that sounds good. Of course, because I’m saying that now it’s going to seem ridiculous by the time the draft rolls around.

Hmm.
It’s kind of pointless to speculate who the 49ers should take, as (1) no one knows where the 49ers are going to be picking, and (2) no one knows what players will go where. A college football season can see a player regarded as a “top prospect” fall completely off the draft board and a virtual unknown skyrockets to a top 10 pick.
I guess speculating on positions could work, though. The 49ers, from the looks of it, will still need a QB, NT, OLB, CB, or FS. The only way the 49ers don’t need a FS is if Goldson proves worthy, which is very unlikely. I also didn’t forget about RT, I just don’t think it’s a position the 49ers need to use a first round pick on.

this
Great example is QB Andre Woodson of the New York Giants. When he was at Kentucky at one point early in his final season he was actually projected as a potential top 10 pick. He ended up going in the sixth round.

Seriously.
I’m still recovering from an overdose of conversation about the 2009 draft, and now we’re trying to throw out wild imaginings and speculation about next year’s picks? Give me a break. Let’s play the 2009 schedule first and talk about the draft when our season is ended.

Or the safety from Tennessee, although for the life of me I can’t remember his name, and I’m honestly too lazy to go look it up.

McCoy should be the first jplayer we want
Eric Berry the second, and please trade the 2nd and 3rd to make it happen. There appear to be gems in this draft and they are gonna be pounced on . Taylor Mays will go quick, and I’d rather have Berry at SS.

who should we draft in 2010
if the niners stay put and don’t move or trade picks they should take Tayler Mays first if he’s still available when we pick ,then one of the top cbs, then in the second rd the best pass rusher, in the 3 rd the best ot left on the board. then the rest of the draft should be for added depth. now if neither Shaun Hill nor Alex Smith step up, this all goes by the wayside and then they’ll have to take a qb early in the draft.

On positions
Right now OT, QB and S. I hope we don’t need to draft a QB first round. Maybe even CB but probably not. OT would be good for depth and a potential franchise OT. We have Nate Davis but I don’t know if the coaches think he can be a QOTF. Dashon sounds good in practice but will he be able to do it in the games? Taylor Mays would be amazing. Im sure he could play FS/SS so that would be awesome. I don’t follow NCAA that much so I dont really know any prospects that would interest us other than Mays.

I was really hoping he would come out this year but that would be amazing if we come out with Crabtree and then Mays next year.

We need to start
loading up the defense once we get like baltimore why worry about offense and if that doesnt work pick up mays and terrence cody or the best offensive tackle in the lower part of the 1st round

Of course it is way too early to know who we will be targeting at draft time
in 2010, but this is just a general, based on our current needs (which will likely be different next year), “wish list” type of thing. So, yeah, definitely early, but just for (site decorum)s and giggles.

I wouldn't go that far
but I agree with you that Mays is getting more support than I thought he would, especially on this site. Isn’t Mays basically the “Vernon Davis” of safeties? Makes the occasional highlight reel play and amazes in work-outs and drills but has never really put together consistent production at the college level.
There is a lot of raw tools to like there but he needs to show more actual production before I would be excited about nabbing him in the first round.
by DiegoAsFan on May 23, 2009 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
A Lot Of USC Homers...
On this site yeah Eric Berry is an extremely better safety than Mays has ever shown and younger. For our first rounders next year I would love to finally shore up our NT position with Terrance Cody and for the other get the best OT available. Completing our lines would help the super star ie. Willis and Gore.

ideally
… we would draft high enough with the panthers pick to get terrence cody.
then look at alabama CB javier arenas with our second pick.
as for those who say Mays or Berry, we are already more than set at safety.
I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.

What? From an outsider’s perspective, safety is one of the more pressing needs on the 49ers.

Let's re-think this discussion
Instead of focusing on specific players….let’s talk about positions instead.
by chikmagnet_565 on May 23, 2009 11:57 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Assuming
Both of our picks in 2010 will be mid-round picks (15-20) I think the Niners have several different options…as for the options at QB, Bradford from OU will likely go top 3, which then leaves Jevan Snead from Ole Miss, Tebow or McCoy. Devlin may be a pickup in the 2nd rd if he can hang around. Out of these choices, i’d say the Niners would pick McCoy.
They wont go with a RB in rd 1, but imo the best back in the draft will be Jonathon Dwyer for Georgia Tech. As for OT’s, this will be a very deep position in the draft. Bryan Bulaga from Iowa and Russell Okung from Ok State will likely go top 10 leaving Trent Williams from OU, Ciron Black from LSU and Adam Vlatoski from Texas as options. If SF goes for OT, i think they go Black from LSU.
by st. francisco on May 24, 2009 8:31 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
As for defense
which I personally think they will address with their first of their 1st round picks…theres a good crop of pash rushers coming in the 2010 draft ( or so we think). Carlos Dunlap from Florida is imo the best defensive end, i think he goes top 5. Which leaves Everson Griffen from USC, George Selvie from USF and Greg Romeus from Pitt. There is also the kind of BIG Nose Tackles coming up in 2010 that the Niners desperately need..Gerald McCoy from OU (6’4 295) Ndamukong Suh from Nebraska (6’4 305), Terrence Cody from Alabama (6’5 365) and Lawrence Marsh from Florida (6’5 305). Some might also consider Marvin Austin from UNC (6’3 305) as a top 25 pick. I can personally see Terrence Cody in 49er Red next year.
by st. francisco on May 24, 2009 8:38 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Projecting Linebackers..
With Sergio Kindle from Texas (6’4 254) being the highest rated so far, with a skill set similar to Terrell Suggs. Other Outside backers i project as 1st round picks are Travis Lewis from OU, Navarro Bowman from Penn State, Mark Herzlich from BC and Sean Witherspoon from Missouri. Brandon Spikes from Florida projects as the top MLB in 2010, with Rolando McClain from Alabama (6’4 248) also being included in the 1st round discussion. Top Cornerbacks in 2010 appear to be Joe Haden from Florida (5’11 185), Trevard Lindley from UK (6’0 177), and Javier Arenas from Alabama (5’9 198). There is some debate as to who the best safety will be in 2010, with the arguement between Taylor Mays from USC (6’4 225) and Eric Berry from Tennessee (6’0 195) being the leading players. I think Berry has the overall better skill set, and appears to be in the Ed Reed mold, while Mays looks like the 2010 version of Roy Williams. Also Earl Thomas from Texas (5’10 195), Major Wright from Florida (6’1 205) and Morgan Burnett from GT (6’1 198) might be considered 1st round talent by some.
