49ers sign TE Bear Pascoe to 4-year contract
EDITOR'S NOTE: If you missed it, check out our man ProfessorBigelow's bio on Bear from late last month.
The 49ers announced today they have signed rookie tight end Bear Pascoe to a 4-year contract. Pascoe, a sixth round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, is the fourth of the 49ers seven draft picks to sign a contract.
Pascoe (6-5, 251) was a two-time All-WAC selection at Fresno State, where he played in 45 games (37 starts) and hauled in 112 passes for 1,294 yards and 10 touchdowns. He blocked a school-record six kicks during his career, ranking him ninth in NCAA history. He's a native of Porterville, CA.
In 2008, Pascoe started 12 games and recorded 40 receptions for 400 yards and four touchdowns. He had a career year in 2007, catching 45 passes for 553 yards and four touchdowns in 12 starts. Pascoe started 12 games in 2006, finishing with 22 receptions for 307 yards and two touchdowns. As a redshirt freshman, he played in 13 games and caught five passes for 34 yards. After being recruited as a quarterback out of high school, Pascoe made the switch to tight end and redshirted as a true freshman.
We continue to await the signing of Michael Crabtree, but for now the team is otherwise taking care of its business. Always good to see rookies get their deals taken care of as soon as possible.

Bear Pasco signs
After reading the bio on him he sounds very intriguing. Local farm boy gets a chanse to make it big. Sounds like he could make a real contribution. Doesn’t have the speed of Vernon Davis but has good hands and can block.
You know
I’m LOVING this!!!!

This confirms that we are
Loaded at TE and loaded at WR. We also appear to be loaded at RB and at FB. I’d say we are light years ahead of last season.
What’s left is QB, and we are a damn sight better with a fully prepared Shaun Hill working with Raye than we were with JT O’No with Old 7-Step.
Finally, the OL has one year more experience, and we have Marvel Smith instead of JJ. We still have Wragge and Wallace as backups, and a real sleeper in Boone. Better this season.
I’d say things are looking up and you don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to figure it out.
Kezarvet
agreed
I really like the upgrade at Tackle, since Smith has Pro Bowl potential if he can play up to his earlier form—he was quite durable as a Steeler; that is to say, he’s not the kind of guy (as JJ was) to not play because he was nicked up. I’m really intrigued by the Boone pick-up, too.
Morgan breaks through in 2009!
Prediction
Bear will prove to be are real sleeper this year. And possibly the Niners best TE after a while. Saw all of his home games live. Dude is a baller!
49ers and TOOL live, my personal Heaven!!!
Better Prediction
RJF or Nate Davis may be the real sleepers.
They each have a huge upside….let’s see if they take advantage of the opportunity given to them by the 49ers.

Nate Davis opportunity?
Nate Davis might be a long term sleeper (over many years), but if he touches the field during a regular season game I’d be stunned.

wouldn't it be nice..
..to have to sit Hill for our last game after clinching a Playoff berth, and seeing what Davis’ could do in the 4th quarter?

yeah that would be awesome
to see Davis rip apart the Rams in St. Louis. Davis to Bear. All we have to do is wait.
DAVIS
if nate davis had to compete for the starting job then alex has to suck in preseason and davis has to lead a 3rd string team into the endzone
Oh NO!
I have been grossly misunderstood.
I was not suggesting that either Nate Davis or RJF would surprise us this year.
I was merely suggesting that they may turn into great players, and (because of their draft status) steals.

i wonder how much it would take..
to get wilfork from the pats. they drafted the OTHER Boston College nose tackle in the second round, and vince is sitting out their minicamp with a contract dispute.
If you had a lineup of 9 Jack Custs who hit(Cust career average) .239 AVG, .382 OBP, and .475 SLG, then your team would score 6.12 runs per game-totalling to 991runs a season. The 08 rangers lead the majors in runs score with 901.
If I'm not mistaken...
… Wilfork’s deal is up at the end of the season, that’s probably why the Pats drafted Brace. If Brace proves to be serviceable in the middle this year in the rotation, I think the Pats may deem Wilfork expendable. I don’t think they’ll unload Wilfork before they get a better idea of what they have in Brace, though.
Can expect Bear
to be busting it on special teams.

2 Tight End Sets
Think of the Niners using 2 tight ends and 2 wide receivers with a single back in an offensive set. With our versatility we could do some cool trick stuff before the snap. We could bring a TE (probably Vernon) back and use him as a FB, we could do a 5 receiver set for mismatches in personnel, we could use Vernon as a vertical threat against a LB (sounds like a Martz idea, I apologize), we could bring Crabtree across the field for a handoff, etc. Just an idea – I like the versatility and possibilties it creates.
VD as deep threat
For as much as VD has awesome speed, I think last year’s experiment proved more that VD is valuable as a guy doing shorter crossing routes than tracking long throws down the field. Davis is neither Tony Gonzales nor Torry Holt. If they can get him singled up against a LB and then have him break across the field (leaving the LB in his dust)—those are the kinds of throws on which he really thrives.
Morgan breaks through in 2009!
Agree, but
it’s the threat part that may be more valuable than the actual number of plays where VD runs deep routes. Having him run a deep route pulls someone from the box, which in turn opens up the box for a run or for a short pass to someone else.
One deep completion to Davis early in the season will get the defensive coordinators nervous.

this is bear-y good news
"I'll be honest with you, I love his music, I do, I'm a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, I don't know if it gets any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman"

bear
i’m just curious to wonder what san fran is doing with all this depth at tight end if they are hedging a bet of trading vernon davis??
Davis Year?
V. Davis was like a Million Dollar deposit in a 3 year CD account. It’s yours, but you can’t touch it.
I hope this all means we can find a way to utilize him more in our team. He can make life easier for everyone in our offense.
This team sure is looking good on paper! Go Niners.
The only problem with the Niners offense, is the depth at some of the O-line spots, the fact that Crabtree and Pascoe are still only rookies, and that we have yet, ANOTHER Offensive coordinator.
Also, I don’t jump on QB bandwagons until they’ve proven themselves over the coarse of an entire season. Remember Derek Anderson? Remember Tim Rattay? It takes a full season to see how these guys are going to do. After about 7-10 games teams start to get an idea of QB tendency’s and they can start building a game plan around him. The same will probably happen to Cassel.
Hill has to learn a new system, get familiar with new receivers, and deal with teams game planning around him. What’s going to help him, on the other hand, is having Frank the Tank, and Coffee helping take off the load from Frank, as well as help out with those 3rd and short/goal line situations.
To relate this to Pascoe, the Niners FINALLY have some redzone weapons that they can build upon. Before it was sub 6’0" receivers and Frank Gore only. That’s not too hard to make a game plan against. Now we have Vernon Davis, whom we knew was going to take a few years to learn the game, Michael Crabtree who is 6’2", and Pascoe at 6’5", who is a large target for those short redzone/endzone passes. Hill has shown that he can read the defense and get the ball out quickly. Just make quick, accurate throws as a QB, that’s all I ask for. Now we have guys that can make plays, 3 capable TE’s, a great running game, and tons of receivers who should come into their own in the next couple years.
One Bear to Another
I did a story on Bear and followed his college days – I think that you folks got a great draft pick in him. All the best to him and his time with the 49ers!
Hillis/Moreno in '09
vernon davis
i’ve thought ever since we got vernon that we could teach him to play wideout 6-3 250 with 4.38 speed he could play wideout and inside short patterns what corner or safety is going to have the size for position and handle him off the line ans no one vern could be our number 1 right now if we had gone that direction
Minus the Alligator Arms?
The cake is a lie.
