Picks or Trade?
Hello Nation,
This slow down in the niner news is killing my libido. Let's ratchett it up a notch with an "oh-so-sexy" hypothetical poll.
The 49ers still have some pressing needs. We have pass-rushers chalk full of potential, a thin secondary, and no long term answer at RT. We also are holding on to two 1st round picks for next year. If it comes down to it, would you rather see us hold on to both picks, or trade for an upgrade at one of those positions?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

NT,CB,OT
I can’t think of a young 3-4 NT. There is Jamal Williams and Casey Hampton but they are on the wrong side of 30. I think drafting would the best for NT if one doesn’t emerge (Balmer, Franklin Sopoaga).
CB would probably be best to trade for. I can’t think of anyone who would be worth 1st round pick right now but to me it would be the most logical to trade for.
I think drafting a OT would be the best option. You’d get a OT opposite of Staley to solidify the T spot for 10+ years.
For OLB we should just wait and see what happens. I think if lawson gets 8+ and Haralson 12+ or the equivalent than we would be ok there. I would hate to have to draft or trade for a OLB.
Young NT
There’s always Vince Wilfork (27, I believe), who is (I believe) entering the last year of his rookie contract and will likely be franchised (and possibly traded) next off-season.
My pick would just be to hold onto the picks for next offseason. Having two first rounders (possibly middle of the pack) provides the 49ers tons of negotiating leverage for next offseason.
I am banking on Carolina going 5 and 11 and we get a great 1st round pick.
They actually do have a difficult schedule just from their own division.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
I'm thinking both teams...
… could very well finish under .500, putting them well into the top 15. I just didn’t want to be overly-pessimistic about this season (or should it be seen as overly-optimistic about next off-season?).
2009 Season > 2010 Draft.
Why are we still having this discussion?
My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.
Because
There is nothing to really talk about. I’m waiting on some news about OTAs. Anybody here anything about Madden 10? Can’t wait to see how were ranked
Word on the street is that the ratings system is going to be completely revamped.
Bigger gaps between elite players and warm-body roster spot fillers. I would assume this would also translate into bigger rating gaps between elite teams and…the Lions.
If I had to guess, I’d see us somewhere around a 67 team rating: 63 Offense, 74 defense, 81 special teams (the OVR is never an average).
My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.
Josh Lohman...
Is in charge of franchise mode, if i read correctly. He put together the reboot of head coach, which was still garbage, but at least we’ll see some sort of shake up.

heard about the new rating system
I hate how madden comes out right before i start school so i don’t get to play it all summer. It seems to be a lot more realistic. I really want to see some gameplay so i can get a true sense of what it is like
Late-summer.
If it came out much earlier (i.e. middle of July), people would probably be playing without top draft picks, as I don’t think they’re eligible to be part of the NFLPA until they sign their contracts, no?
stop me if you've heard this one before
but we should totally trade our picks for 3 1st rounders in 2011
"I'll be honest with you, I love his music, I do, I'm a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, I don't know if it gets any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman"
It's actually 4 1st round picks in 2010
Just think, we could have 7 1st round picks 2011 if we trade for future picks twice.
there you go
i like the way you think
"I'll be honest with you, I love his music, I do, I'm a Michael Bolton fan. For my money, I don't know if it gets any better than when he sings "When a Man Loves a Woman"
OR
We could wait until the end of this season (when we have a clearer view of the 2010 draft class) and decide whether it is best to hold on to the picks and use them in the draft or trade them for proven players.
Kind of like how the Eagles did so in this year’s draft….they got Jason Peters and Jeremy Maclin with both of their first round picks….that’s pretty good.
