Is this a guy we look at adding for depth at the right price to a short term deal? Our depth is suspect at best at OLB and an experienced and proven player at this position can be hard to come by. He would also be a good mentor for Lawson and Haralson

Everette Brown.

I’m not even a fan of Brown playing as a 3-4 OLB, but who’s going to rush the passer for the 9ers?

Ellis

If the 49ers could sign him to a one-year deal similar to the one they signed Spikes for last season, that would probably be best. I don’t know if that’ll be possible though, as I don’t really know what the interest in Ellis is from the other teams (including the 49ers). I definitely don’t think the 49ers should be competing too much for his services.

hes released...

there’s not going to be much competition for him this late in the year..but as i mentioned before, the fifth leading sack artist in cowboy history could deff mentor such young potential as lawson, harris, haralson, and whoever else we use to rush the passer

Yeah, like there isn’t an abundance of teams looking for a pass rusher? If Ellis is as good (or decent) as many people around here think he is, there is definitely a market for him, especially now that he’s an UFA.

greg ellis

oh hell yes!
Sign him immediatly. If Brooks is already giviing Sing a hard time this would be a solution to the pass rush. In fact, it would be irresisistible for the Niners, They just cannot pass him up.
He could be counted for 8 to 10 sacks this year.
Offer him a one year contract just like Bly.

What if another team offers him two-years? Or what if another team offers him a one-year worth twice what the 49ers paid Spikes for last year (Pass rushers are paid a premium, even if they’re older) and guarantees half of that? You can’t just assume that a contract like Bly’s is enough to get anyone out there, especially a pass rusher who averaged 10 sacks a year for the past two years.

Brooks giving sing a hard time?

Where did that come from? I heard brooks was looking good in OTA’s, not about him giving sing a hard time…….but it would be nice to have a veteran pass rusher to mentor our young talented linebackers..!!

I'm a little lazy to look it up...

… it I believe he didn’t show up the first day of the two-day mini-whatever this week, and the second day Singletary rode him pretty hard. If I’m not mistaken, Barrows believes he’s actually missed two days.

The issue with veterans like this:

It’s quite possible Ellis is over the hill, and not any better than Lawson at this point in his career. The Cowboys aren’t stupid. They clearly think they’re better off without him.

And they think they’re a super-bowl team. In other words: they don’t think he’s going to help them THIS YEAR.

We, on the other hand, aren’t going to the super bowl this year. So that leaves us with the following options:

1) Ellis is better than Lawson. We win 1-2 more games this year, with no long-term benefit towards winning a super bowl.
2) Ellis is worse than Lawson. He doesn’t get on the field much.
3) Ellis is about the same as Lawson:

The latter case is actually a problem. Because that means that Ellis takes snaps away from Lawson during training camp, while the team tries to figure out who’s better. This hurts Lawson’s development. If Lawson is SLIGHTLY better, then Sing is going to want to play him, in fact, he’ll have to – taking snaps away from Lawson, who’s our probably starter next year anyway. Not only does that hurt Lawson’s development, but it hurts the team’s planning: we are less certain of what we have in Lawson, so enter next postseason with more question marks.

In other words: unless we’re signing the long-term solution at pass-rushing OLB, we’re probably better off leaving the position to Manny this year. A short-term small upgrade may hurt us on the larger strategic questions even while it helps us on the short-term ones.
