mini-camp is over! Has anyones outlook changed on the current 49ers

Since the  season has ended  i have read an abundance of 49er related articles.  Now that mini-camp has officially  ended, my outlook has changed on certain players, free agent signings, and coaching decisions. I just wanted to know does anyone feel differently then they did at the end of the season? keeping track of OTA's is anyone as excited about Vernon Davis as me? he's showing his ass in practice.  i do realize its practice and your playing against your own guys but come on.  Shaun hill vs Alex smith.  I'm a big fan of Shaun Hill, but do anyone feel like if Smith can win the job from him then its the right decision.  I see alot of people that dislike smith; feels he's a bust. to me i feel he's young.  I see how much zip he has when he release compared too that thing hill delivers when he throws.  I think that the confidence that he(smith) can fit the ball in there is probably the difference between an completion and a int.  Think about it, Hill makes the safe pass 6-15 yards because its there. Its a chance he can make  the 25-30 yard pass but if its a bit behind that's an int.  All I'm saying is I think Smith just might be the best solution for our qb situation.  Maybe I just don't want to see Hill fall under the same catergory as, say....ay tim ratty.  I much rather him be a what if player.  "What if he played a full season how good could he be"?  Right now everyone knows he dont have the Physical tools as Cutler, but statistically per game played, hills more impressive.  Maybe under a full season he becomes shaun hill the practice player.  Id rather Hill come in as a back up atleast we would have an experienced back up.  Hill reminds me of pennington he makes good decisions with his passes I never feel on the edge when hes behind center.  If Smith in fact really has fallen off since his injury, and Jimmy rayes system is closely related to turners.....smith becoming healthy should be exactly what we need.  we may be in for a treat.

When we released Bryant Johnson and signed a smaller jones I admit I was a little skeptical.  I'm not familiar with brandon jones, all I know is jones brought in around the same amount of receiving yards and he's 2 inches shorter.  Now I've been watching him in practice and I see the kid can fly.  Zeigler?....when I first seen zeigler he looked like a highschool wr.  anytime he caught a pass I would tense up hoping that he ran out of bounds or performed a qb slide.  Now in practice recievers are absent Hill, and battle in particular.  With more opportunities I guess ziggy is getting more attention and I like it.  I would still prefer matt jones over him though. I've never seen heitman without equipment he's a beast.  tarrel brown I had high hopes for and I still do, but in practice just about every receiver has abused him. Goldson OH yes.  Im so glad roman is out of the picture.  Alot of people are real quiet and I was hoping to hear a little more noise from (reggie smith?).  Is it good that the DB's are quiet?  its so much but Im going to leave it open to comments.

I see how much zip he has when he release compared too that thing hill delivers when he throws.

2 shoulder injuries later, does anyone really know how much “zip” Smith can still put on his passes. It was never that much to begin with even before both the injuries.

If Smith in fact really has fallen off since his injury, and Jimmy rayes system is closely related to turners…..smith becoming healthy should be exactly what we need. we may be in for a treat.

Why do people think Smith was good in Turner’s system? Because Smith had his most successful season w/ a 1TD to 1 INT ratio?

2nd season

People look at it in the context of it being only his second season as a pro and showing improvement.

Yea...what he said

progress is a slow process….look at Peyton manning he wasn’t a beast in his first season. I think it took him three full seasons before he actually showed how good he was, and he had the same crew. Not to mention possibly a future hall of famer in Harrison. I look at this as smiths third season with a experienced wr in Bruce.

peyton manning was better as a rookie

than alex smith was in year 2. he had 10 more TDs and almost 1,000 more yards.

and as for the 3 full seasons thing, manning’s stats barely improved from year 2 to year 3, and the team won 3 less games.

I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.

yea my bad

I meant eli. but even he put up a 3000 plus yards consistently.

Smith wasn't good in Turner's offense

It was partially him and partially the offense. We do have beter WR’s, but Shaun Hill has played 10 games for his career. He watched from the sideline for 4 or 5 years and he is a solid 60 plus percent in ten games. It’s still the NFL. Alex Smith needs to begin this season watching and soaking in the playbook and Hill’s decision making. And I’m sure the guys on the O have more confidence in Hill despite practice. I’d be looking at Hill as why some of us, as well as Niners Brass, are being opimistic about the upcoming season. I don’t look at Smith as a bust, just a rookie thrown in a bad situation, and before we turn him into Joey Harrington, let him sit back and watch this offense and learn it a tad bit longer than he ever has before. 5 games into the season we have a bye week, and at that time the decision to go with Hill or Smith should be reassessed.
By the way I like what Ive heard from Morgan Davis and Raye’s offense. Gore looks good on the Hill and Coffee has drawn some love from Sing himself. The defense is still questionable as far as Lawson is concerned, Will we have a pass rush?? Is Haralson’s success based on him playing beside Smith?? If we get more turnovers and 3 and outs we will win the division!!

I’m more surprised about no surprises. Unlike Nolan and later Martz, they would talk about one thing than do the other. Everything Singletary talked about before camp happened during camp.
1. There was a QB competition between Hill and Smith
2. Vernon Davis did get the ball thrown his way
3. We actually played a 3-4 defense
4. Singletary promised intensity and attention to detail.

the two players who have changed my opinion of them more than anyone

are brandon jones and kory sheets.

when we signed brandon jones, i saw him as the next in a long line of failed free agent WRs. (bryant johnson, darrell jackson, ashley lelie…) But from what i’ve heard out of OTAs, i now think he’s neck and neck with isaac bruce for the starting Z receiver job on day one. although once crabman is ready to start at X i’m sure we’ll move josh morgan over to Z anyway, and then they’re both backups.

and as for kory sheets, after we signed him i looked up a few scouting reports and found nothing about his playing ability, but rather how he had a bad attitude, didnt work hard in practice, and was a bad teammate. one report used the phrase “virtually uncoachable”. needless to say, i expected him to fail. but so far he hasnt had any attitude issues and he does seem to be working hard to learn how to be an NFL running back. i’m still not on any kind of “kory sheets is the future” bandwagon, but he has improved my image of him back up to neutral.

I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.

I was on that wagon..I still am.

man I like korey sheetz. the only thing thats changed to me is I’m a little less convinced he will make the roster after hearing he’s having a hard time making the transition from college running back to pro back. I want him to stay. I dont believe he’s the future but i believe he can have that Reggie bush, Darren Sproles type impact, has to be accounted for at all times when hes on the field.

Sheets will be squadded unless he really blows up in TC

I’m a fan of Sheets, and I like his return ability (which is probably his best shot at making the team), but it seems unlikely that he’ll make the roster, since the team is very likely to keep Gore, Coffee, Robinson (ST ability is huge here) and maybe even Clayton. It’d be great if he made it, but…

Morgan breaks through in 2009!

Ay did Crabs

Practice at all with you guys or dose he have a stress fracture like a have read but, across the bay Darrius has a “hamstring soreness” so my guess is neither of them is practicing.

Amazing, Jamarcus Russell hands off to McFadden who pitches it back to Russell who finds Darrius Heyward Bey in the Middle of the Field wide open 30, 20,10,5 Touchdown Raiders! Amazing. This telecast is Brought to you by Cable.

Crabtree

The stress fracture is healed but the team didn’t let him practice in any of the voluntary or mandatory workouts. He did some running but that’s about it.

Do you know if he will play in preseason or not?

Yes

He’s expected to be 100% for training camp. That’s been the plan since draft day.

good, I would like to see that

Heyward Bey vs Crabtree a little competition over the bay never hurts.

One good year

That is all it was! Nothing else .I didn’t like the selection than but I’ll lived with it until this saga ( Smith) is done. Hill as done more with less and deserves to Start. If you put Smith in and he blows it, he’s done as Niner QB.

by LASVEGASNINER on Jun 22, 2009 11:46 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

more with less? how so?

Smith is singed as a #2, how would he be done if he didn’t perform at #1 levels. Unless… another team thinks he’s a #1? This may have made sense last year, but not this year.

Let me say this, When Crabs and Morgan are wide open streaming down the sideline and Sean Hill throws a couple passes similar to those in the St. Louis game, you will all see that we are not the Bucs or Ravens of the past. A Dilfer\Johnson like QB will not be quite enough for this team.

by goatfather on Jun 24, 2009 6:59 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Think about it!!!!!!!!

Every niner fan should want alex smith to win because we know sing wont start him unless he is above and beyond hill in preseason so think about how good that means he is if he can do that and he is 25 years old if he wins the job we got our guy for at least 10 years so dont hate on the guy everyone has to admit nolan messed with him he had ZERO TALENT and then we started to get some he got hurt so he should get one last shot because if we trade him and he ends up being good we will be the fools

The original idea makes sense

But I really don’t think Smith is “above and beyond Hill”

by chikmagnet_565 on Jun 23, 2009 4:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Smiths our best shot

I think that Smith will give the 49ers out best shot at glory. What will be better about him now is that we are switching to a run first offense which will take a lot of pressure off the pass game. We have a very talented set of WR in which we really haven’t since Smith got there. Give the young guy a chance. Better yet, let him prove it in the preseason.
