The Focus: Alex Smith -Preseason Game #1
Has anyone seen anything written on Alex going up against Nolan in the Niners first preseason game at Home??
I mean, not only is this whole "Can Smith do so well he should start" thing supposedly resting on real game experience, but its going to be against Mike Nolan's scrapped together first year defense!! We couldn't ask for any better drama for a 1st preseason game. I hope Bly's return doesn't overshadow this event (Not to say that won't be fun to watch, or that I hope he doesn't pick one or two).
Will Sing intervene in any way?
What will Nolan's response be? Will he play it cool and mundane and risk the same result as his stint in SF?
Since the QB's have the opportunity to audible in Raye's system, might Smith call a few "shots" himself?
If Smith has any opportunist in him then this is his chance to show what and if he's capable of.
Do you think this will be as interesting as me?
What else are you all looking forward to the most in this game, besides the fact that its the beginning of the season?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

I'd like to see Nolan's D fail
It will give our O-line a lot of confidence.

I'd like to see
Alex throw a couple early TD’s on Nolan’s scattered defense, and then a camera shot of Alex smiling at Nolan.

A camera shot of Nolan’s face.

Come on!
This is Nolan for crying out loud. He will destroy Denver like he did the Niners!

probably why josh mcdaniels hired him.
i think mcdaniels was a plant by belichick to destroy the broncos on purpose. i think he wants the chiefs to win the afc west since he’s such good buds with scott pioli. thats obviously why the pats traded cassel for such a steal. its only a matter of time before the evil patriot empire takes down san diego too.
I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.

The whole Smith vs Nolan match-up is intruiging, but what’s more important is this:
What must Alex Smith do in preseason game #1 to win the job? What do we realistically expect out of him, assuming (big leap of faith here) that he’s actually 100% healthy?
Football season isn’t too far away.
JAI HO!

What Smith needs to do?
I think he’ll need to do quite a bit in more than one game to win the job. I think the biggest thing Raye and Singeltary will look for is the biggest factor Hill has over Smith: the ability to make a decision quick enough to actually make it useful. If he can make a read quick enough and make a decision on where he wants to go with it, it will show that he’s come a long way in terms of (1) understanding the system, and (2) having confidence in his own reads.

Agree with all that
I feel he must show what he is capable of that Sean simple isn’t. If he can consistently find our new young talented receivers down the field for 20 – 40 yards as compared to hills 10- 15 yard dump offs while at the same time not making any big mistakes….and that’s a lot of ifs he’ll get the job outright.
It will be interesting to see if defenses will play the short game against Hill.

It will be interesting to see if defenses will play the short game against Hill.
That’s one of the things I’m most interested in, too. I think Hill can definitely try to keep the defenses honest by hitting 20 yard passes, but against teams with really good corners or good coverage safeties, it may be a tad difficult.
Of course, it’ll also be interesting to see how Raye responds if defense do indeed play the short game. Will Crabtree become a more prominent player (because of his ability to go over the middle and pick up YAC)? Will he stretch the field a little more horizontally (flats, screens, etc)? Will he try to force Hill to make passes he may not be able to make accurately?

Crabs
may be a help with his excellent YAC ability, particularly with screens and making defenders miss in small spaces.

You have to get him the ball though...
If defenses play the short game a short pass to Crabs is likely to get tipped and/or intercepted.

Good Luck
it should b intersting to me cuz I have a lot of faith in Alex Smith I believe he is capable of becoming a very good qb, andmaking a name 4 himself as a niner. good luck. Also I would like to see Big Bear Pascoe SF, and Tom Brandstater DEN. Two very good athletes out of Fresno State, go BULLDOGS!

Tom?
I’d rather see Chirs Simms.
(IMO he’s a much better QB than Orton)
