In-depth article on Alex Smith following the suicide of his best friend
This article was posted in the Nuggets by pwarren85 but I thought it was worth moving to the front for all to see. It's actually the front page article at ESPN.com.

Wow!!!
That was an amazing article, I truly enjoyed reading it. If anyone has lost a best friend through suicide, they know how hard it is for Alex. Man, this article was awesome. Even before reading this, I was hoping that he got the starting job, obviously now, I really hope that he gets the start, but because of this article, I know that he will be just fine, regardless of starting or waiting.
Even though I'm a Hill fan
I’m still rooting for this guy.
and I’m still convinced his best hope is elsewhere.
MURS for President!!!!!!!
Progressing...
I hope Alex can be molded in to a confident NFL quarterback… I believe in Shaun Hill, but I also have not given up on Alex and I hope that he breaks out of his shell. I do like Singletary as coach because he will start who needs to be started.. I doesn’t care because he wants to WIN. Both of these guys are hungry, but can also support each other.
Say what you will about his production on the field
but it’s nearly impossible not to really, really, like Alex Smith as a person.
I think it would be best for him and for the club to treat him like a rookie this season (he’s still younger than some rookies out of BYU…) and sit him behind Shaun Hill at least for the start of the season. Let him get the grasp of the offense and don’t rush him into playing. He still has some potential to be a QB of the future.
I also like Alex as a person ...BUT...
Although I like Smith and have always thought he was a class guy etc,the
article states falsely that he is turning heads in Santa Clara practices
(just like the writer of the article showed his ignorance by stating that
the Niners had gone 8-8 ,when in fact they had not).
In reality Alex has been rather mediocre in practice overall (according to
observers who were there) and has only been a subject of talk at all only
because he seems now to be healthy and throwing the ball without pain and
with some zip on it and because if he greatly improves his skill and play he
has a chance to earn the starting job,a small chance.. But he is not
throwing all that much more accurately than he ever has and it still remains
to be seen if he has improved even the slightest bit from his mediocre play
before the injury when he always seemed to miss wide open receivers and
seemed to always have a very slow release and almost always had that deer in
the headlights look and mostly failed to move the team down the field (like
Hill did every time he came in the game).
Hopefully he is really fully healed and hopefully he will finally(for the
first time) show some NFL caliber skills. But right now Hill is the starting
QB and has shown much more talent for playing the QB position in the NFL
than Smith ever came close to doing.
Hopefully Smith WILL start to turn heads but he has not done that yet,as
that article wrongly stated.
Nice article overall though ! And you are right, how could you not pull for
the guy ? But in the end it coldly boils down to who can win games and who
can’t. Smith has never been as able as Hill to get the job done, not even
close (so far).
