Early 49ers Madden 2010 ratings
Hello 49ers fans, and especially 49ers fans who play Madden. I have come here with the early ratings. For this years Madden they have redone the rating system to so how the elite players are truly elite (Peyton Manning 99 Alex Smith 67)
I was extremely mad after the final roster update for Madden 2009. The 49ers ended up being a 70. Which isn't that bad. The part that bother me was that the Rams, Raiders, Chiefs, Browns etc where higher than us. We were the second worst team (Ahead of the Lions of course). That 70 made me really pissed off. I have found from a sports video game website that I go to (pastapadre.com) many, many, many, ratings for Madden 2010. Of course, I didn't write down all the rating because that would be ridiculous. I don't have all the player ratings, but I do have about half of the team that would be on the 53 man roster. Also I have they rookie rating from awhile back (they may have gone up). So the 49ers will a 73 overall. Which isn't that bad (it would go up with roster updates during the season). I will post all the team overall ratings in order so you get a sense where the 49ers line up against the rest of the league.
1.New England Patriots 93
2. Pittsburgh Steelers 92
3. New York Giants 89
4. Philadelphia Eagles 88
5. San Diego Chargers 88
6. Tennessee Titans 87

They are not in any order. I just scanned through the comments (people requested ratings). Of course there are some missing. Bruce and Goldson, Sopoaga, etc. I will try to find those out. Please discuss if you agree/disagree with the ratings.
I think most of the are pretty fair with the new rating system. When we dominate during the season. If you have a Xbox 360 or PS3 and you haven't gotten any the recent Maddens, than I highly reccomend that you get this one. Everything looks so much better. We could also use this as a general Madden thread since I don't think there is one.
There are a lot of new features in this years game. To me the coolest is the online franchise. You can play franchise online (to use the great features) or with 31 other people. The coolest part is that you can update your depth chart/other things on the internet through EA or an iphone app. There are a lot of new things so here is a link to general features: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madden_NFL_10
If you want to see some videos of Madden 2010 look here:
http://www.youtube.com/user/pastapadre?blend=2&ob=1
NOTE: THESE ARE NOT THE FINAL RATINGS. THEY WILL CHANGE. ALSO THEY WILL CHANGE WILL ROSTER UPDATES DURING THE SEASON.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

I like how madden 10
is making more of a difference between good and bad.
Last years game was the best since they’ve made for the 360 and PS3 console. Hopefully they remove all the glitches in 09 going into 10. The QB walk isn’t fun at all.
P.S
More then willing to beat one here on NN at Madden 09. Just offer up your Gamertag (360) or message mine, which is Heir to Gawd

Besides, I am one of those nerds who likes franchise mode. The could remove that LAME superstar mode and add in some better features. Does ANYONE use that thing?

Superstar mode
I would really like Superstar mode if they made it so you only controlled the particular player you are responsible for. Heck, it’d be even cooler if they could do it in first person or even a more focused third person. It’d add to the realism that that mode is somewhat severely lacking.
by sfgfan on Jun 11, 2009 11:39 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ummm
You do control only your player.
If you set the option to CPU control when the superstar is off the field you don’t get to play on downs where the superstar is sitting out.
I do agree that a 1st person point of view would be pretty cool.
by chikmagnet_565 on Jun 11, 2009 2:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
But...
… you have to sit through the offensive series, no? Or does it skip through all of that?
The version of “Superstar Mode” I’ve previously played for the Wii gives you control of the entire game, like you were playing a regular game. So pardon me if I’m missing out on some (obviously) cool features from the 360 and/or PS3.

You get the option to do whatever you want
If you want to play the whole game you can or you can just control your own player when on the field.

I can't speak for the wii version...
but ps3, 360 and PC versions all grant you control over your player – and each time he steps off the field you have the option to watch the game progress or sim through plays until he’s back in the game.
My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.

Hmm.
I really need to find myself some cash to get a 360 or PS3. I didn’t try ’09’s Superstar Mode, but I would love to be able to just play my ILB spot when the team is on defense and sim through the offensive series. That’d increase playability for that mode (for me) dramatically.
by sfgfan on Jun 12, 2009 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wii
On ‘09 for a Wii you can play all your superstar’s plays in the first person and then play normally for all other plays.
I have a LB and control only him when he is on the field. For all other plays I control the offense or defense normally. Only frustrating thing is I have no play-calling ability aside from audibles.

Love Franchise mode!
Also play online but franchise is my love. Built the 9ers new stadium on every madden game since they implemented create a stadium. Even used the design they have for the Santa Clara site. My 1 complaint is that unless you have the online software update, there are several bugs in franchise mode.

Surely that will change.
Gore a 91 is beautiful, as is Willis at 98. Smith is a little slighted with an 83, and I thik Staley’s 85 is well deserved. Everything looks pretty accurate, not too bad.

Eric Heitman could have used some love.
The fact that he has a (marginally) lower rating than Vernon Davis makes me wonder if these people know anything about the players they’re assigning numbers to.
Also, I think that Crabtree, at 84, is overrated. I’m sure he’ll be good eventually, but I don’t see how a rookie can justify that kind of rating in this new system.

True, but its gotta be difficult to be assigned to “create” Vernon. Seriously, try the creating a TE with Davis’ speed, strenght leaping ability, and blocking skills….you have to have to give him hands of stone to keep him from being better than Gates, Gonzalez and Witten.

I agree, and it leads me to question their rating system for rookies, then. I understand the increasing of the gap between “elite” and “bad” players, but that poses a bit more subjectivity in terms of rating the rookies. It’s easy to look at a veteran’s body of work and determine if they’re worthy of an 80s to 90s rating or a 50s and 60s rating. However, how can the developers (or whomever assigns grades) justify giving a rookie who knows nothing about the NFL game yet a higher grade than an “average” player who is probably as solid as they come in terms of hands and knowing his assignments in his scheme? I know we don’t see Bruce’s or Battle’s ratings, but I highly doubt that they’re higher than 84.
by sfgfan on Jun 9, 2009 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well...
He was arguably the best prospect in the draft. The problem probably lies in the progression of a player. I’m not very studied up on how players progress thru the seasons, whether it’s thru performance or just weekly training, but it’s no fun (which begs the point of this being a video game) to draft the best prospect in the draft and then having it take 5 seasons before he breaks the 80 pt. barrier . For example, if Bruce and Battle [and Jones] are rated above Crabtree that would make Crabtree a bench player and while we all know that rookies can progress mightily from the bench I imagine that process is had to translate in a video game. Again I don’t know how they have the progression of players set up in the games (ie younger players tend to make bigger jumps than older players, etc.) but it seems like they offset the learning curve of rookie with higher starting ratings (at least for the top end prospects).
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.

Ah
This makes sense. I understand the idea that you want your top rated prospect to make an immediate impact (in Madden, I tend to trade into at least one of the top 10 spots in almost every draft). Waiting for 4 or 5 years for Crabtree to reach “elite” status is quite some time, especially if many players of the game don’t play much beyond a couple franchise years.
I guess it kind of, as you point out, boils down to the fact it is a game, and having your elite rookie contribute sooner is probably a lot more fun than him having to take time to develop.

Don't really understand how Staley managed an 85, to be honest. He isn't anywhere near as good at his position as, say,
Eric Heitmann.

The left tackle position is one of the hardest positions to play in football because most teams put their best pass rusher on that side because it’s on the QB’s blindside.
I’m not saying that heitmann doesn’t deserve a higher rating be cause he does, he IS one of the best centers in the league and that’s why the niners re-signed him to that deal

I'm not saying that left tackle isn't hard to play.
But according to the relative value of these rankings in Madden 10, 85 is an above average starter. Something Joe Staley isn’t. Something Eric Heitmann is.

Joe Staley is an above average starter. Staley’s rating is about right your beef should only be that Heitmann is underrated not that Staley is overrated.

Disagree
Staley is below average as a run blocker, and about average (maybe above a bit) as a pass blocker. Obviously, he’s still got tons of room to improve though.

Disagree
I’d take Staley over half of the NFL LT, thus making him above average. Pass protection is highly more critical for a LT than a run blocking.

Not to mention...
… that the notion he’s a weak run-blocker is kind of odd. The guy could have stuck at RT if Jennings had ever learned to stay healthy, probably implying he is more than a capable run-blocker.

Why?
Because of age, maybe, but as of now, Joe Staley is not a great left tackle.
"Part, fools!
Put up your swords. You know not what you do."
by Fearless Frog on Jun 19, 2009 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I mean, I wouldn't even call Staley as of now an above average tackle.
Per ProFootballFocus:
in the running game he’s very poor indeed and may well be the most flimsy blocker of all NFL Tackles. Inside, outside, bull-rushed, Joe is consistently beaten by nearly every DRE he faces and if it wasn’t for a dominating display against the inconsistent Dewayne White of Detroit in week 3, the picture would be even worse.
Obviously, run-blocking isn’t the end-all be-all of tackles but it’s not like he’s some studly pass-protector who nullifies the edge-rush or something yet to make up for that.
"Part, fools!
Put up your swords. You know not what you do."

left tackle
I think most of us would agree he’s not a great left tackle yet. I don’t know if he’ll ever be a Hall of Fame tackle, but given his development thus far, I think he’ll turn into a very good left tackle. I’d certainly like to see huge progress this year, but I also know it takes a little time.
by Fooch on Jun 19, 2009 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I can see him improving if at least because there are no more huge drop backs.
But on the flip side, is his run blocking going to improve rapidly enough to fit in with Raye’s smashmouth attack?
"Part, fools!

by Fearless Frog on Jun 19, 2009 3:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
it's entirely possible
Considering he’s only been in the league two years and at his current position for one, I do think it’s possible. Obviously I could be wrong, but I’ll take my chances with him. And clearly the 49ers have confidence in him at this point to continue his development.

As a note for Madden Rankings
ESPN.com/videogames is rolling out the complete team rankings for every team in Madden 10, one per day. Yesterday was the Bears, today is the Packers. Obviously, the NFC North is this week; they don’t have a schedule for when each team goes up, but you might want to keep an eye on it for when the Niners (or the NFC West in general) comes up…

Throw Power...
… is the hardest attribute to improve in Madden, at least on any of the previous PS2 and Wii versions (i.e. you can only improve power through a “Training Camp” drill). Davis would become a super QB in two or three years if those were his ratings on the Wii (assuming they don’t change the player improvement algorithm).

I think throughout the season these scores will have to go up. They have to when the Niners start winning games. I was most surprised that C. Rachel got an 80. I just think overall the Niners just havn’t been getting any love. Madden must be made on the East Coast considering only 1 West Team in top 5 and only 3 in top 10 and that’s if you count Dallas as West Coast.

There’s no East Coast bias here. EA is based out of Redwood City, CA. The lack of west coast teams in the top 10 has more to do with the NFC West and AFC West sucking as divisions than anything else.

The only reason that there’s only 2 teams on the west coast in the top 10 is because there’s the niners, Rams, Seahawks, Raiders, Bronco’s, and chiefs that are in the lower third of the team rankings, which makes only 2 of the NFC/AFC west teams in the higher ranks, which makes sense if you look at their records last year
by ro128487 on Jun 9, 2009 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly
EA just made the rankings to reflect rankings from last year. They aren’t predictions for the season or anything, just how the team stands before the season starts. Once we start proving what we can do, the ratings will go up.

I understand what rlottt#42 is saying
when you first get your copy of madden 09 spikes is on the free agent list. This is before you update your roster. The team is 72 at this point. with the addition of takeo spikes the team jumps up to 86 overall. when ea created the update the team dropped to an 70, and remains 70.

that would be cool
if it was at all true. cuz first off were talking madden 10 and second one player doesnt make a team jump 14 points
by june8thjrat on Jun 10, 2009 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I've noticed...
that if you tweak any player at all on most teams that are subpar the team rating will jump as high as 89. Saw it happen when i adjusted rosters myself. After adjusting the Raiders, they went to an 87 and that was with only adjusting McFadden and Nandi. The overall team rating is misleading to me.

to realize that the post prior to mine people were actually talking about madden 09 as far as how the roster ratings receive a significant boost after free agent signings? so it is true. Unfortunately one player do have that kind of effect.

If adding 1 player has that effect or tweaking 1-2 players already on the team does the same thing then why even worry about overall team rating? It’s a joke.

yea i agree eff the ratings
you have to ignore the overall ratings prior to this season. If you think about it though its a videogame, so it has to be some kinda system to make you want to play with your favorite teams. If your a lions fan, and just about every play book has the same plays, then you cant really out coach someone who plays wit the patriots. so for a videogame the overall ratings are overrated. right now the best team in the game is probably the raiders whos rating is 71. if the ratings were legit then who would want to play with the 49ers against your friend who plays with the cowboys? the game is bias in that right, and will easily make you put down the controller. Because even if you make the right reads the better team will always be in position. offensive line will fall apart, def line wont create pressure, dbs will drop passes from the top rated qbs. I think the game becomes a little more strategy based this season.

I own CB blitzes
But that’s mostly because I rarely step out of the pocket.
When the defense runs a CB blitz I just chuck it to the WR the CB left and I get a first down.
As for people that do 99-step drops: They’re idiots, their accuracy goes way down while they’re on the run….They always throw interceptions.

Madden 09 vs 10
Hopefully with the new madden the fix all of the glitches, or at least the one where a player clearly catches a ball out of bounds and they call him in, you challenge it and see on the replay he was clearly out of bounds (sometimes both feet), and they don’t overturn it…that is sooo frustrating…I also feel the niners have been slighted a little bit, a 73 is a little harsh, there are some teams above them that they are better than or at least as good as..i.e. Tampa Bay, Houston, the Jets
by sanfranfanmdk on Jun 10, 2009 3:58 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
As was mentioned before, stats and ratings are largely based off of the previous season.
And last year, the Bucs, Texans and Jets were all better than our own 49ers.

In the old Madden System this would make sense.
However in Madden 10, they are making the difference between “Elite” and “Average” players much more profound.
Example:
75 is an average player in the NFL, (Parys Haralson, Moran Norris, David Bass).
90+ is an elite player in the NFL, (Frank Gore, Patrick Willis, Andy Lee).
Based on Performance, I would say that we have been rated pretty fairly. If they continue to improve, EA will adjust the ratings accordingly.
The one aspect that EA failed at with 09 was that they didn’t adjust the ratings accordingly when a team declined, such as the Dallas Cowboys.
The cake is a lie.
by Sultan of Seitan on Jun 11, 2009 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Shaun Hill a 79?
/eyeroll.
I understand being optimistic and liking your own players, but come on. In this system, a “league average starter” seems to be about a 73-74 rating. Giving Hill a 79 would assume that you’d choose him over about 3/5 of the starting QBs in the league.
Really? No.
My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.
by shlecko on Jun 11, 2009 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
My only real issue with the new ratings system is this:
It seems like this year, more than ever before, you will win with players. This means that the team you select will have more influence on the outcome of the game than it ever has. This would be great in an NBA or MLB game, where the leagues are largely dominated by a few upper-echelon teams…but in a league like the NFL that is so well known for its parity, I just don’t think that it makes much sense.
Even in a non-real-world setting, taking into account that it’s just a videogame, it still doesn’t seem to be a very reasonable change. One of the great things about Madden in the past has always been that a good player, employing solid strategy with smart play-calling could beat a weaker player with a far superior roster of players. I worry if this change to the ratings system might change this.
It was bad enough that 80% of the players online would go with either the Cowboys or Patriots before. This change to the ratings system might make that even worse. Even the most dedicated of fans won’t choose their favorite team if all of their starters are rated 30 points below the Colts or Steelers.
Call me crazy, but I don’t think that Madden games should be decided at the team select screen.
My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.
by shlecko on Jun 11, 2009 4:21 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Perhaps...
… the rating system will hurt online play enough for them to change it back? In any case, it’ll be at least a year before we can decide how these new ratings hurt and whether or not EA is going to change them. I totally see what you’re saying, though.

I rep my Squad!
I get smashed all the time as the Golden State Warriors in 2k9. Not so much anymore since they fixed Sjax’s jumper and made Randolph better. I will roll with hmmm, Damon Huard as my QB in Madden. If Smith and Hill are 60’s then Huard is in the 50’s.
by CHAWKZILLA on Jun 12, 2009 7:55 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I get what you're saying but...
The change EA is making with Madden is a good one. I always play with a middle of the road team anyways (I liked the Texans last year) and just wait for another play to pick a reasonable match-up. I think the change will actually have the revers effect that you’re thinking. Less people will want to play against the Pats and Steelers so the people that constently select those teams will have a tougher time getting people to play them.
Don't sweat it. I'm illiterate.
by methodrampage on Jun 12, 2009 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The NFL has way less parity than the MLB
In the MLB you are a great team if you have a .600 winning percentage. In the NFL the best teams win 80-90% of their games, and when they play the lesser teams they almost always win.

Roster update
Instead of going by team to do my updates I go by position. I do the top 32ish players in every position. That makes it so I can keep track of who is better than who. The stats I increase or decrease will depend on what position I’m working on. As for players in a backup role I will only increase his stats if he has played a significant role in the teams success for example Darren Sproles. I’ve been doing since Madden 02. It took a couple of years to get really fast at it but now it’s a breeze. Totally worth it for how much I hate the ratings and updates. The only thing I appreciate about the update is that players are all on the right teams. When it comes to that I treat it like the stats for backup players. If the free agent or traded player is pretty notable for ratings or has great stats then I will make the change. If he hasn’t added at all to the teams success or has a lame rating then it’s a waiste of time.

Sometime this week espn will show the 49ers player ratings. Today the Cardinals ratings. They look pretty solid, but I think we have them beat. I am curious to see the Rbs, Corners. Plus EA sports talks about potential factor. So if u have a guy and he has high potential he is most likely will become a 99.
