Golden Nuggets: A little Alex Smith and Michael Vick for you?

It's interesting that the primary focus of today's articles is QBs Alex Smith and Michael Vick.  Vick is a big fat no at this point.  Smith on the other hand raises all sorts of questions.  More importantly than that, we don't exactly have a lot of answers.  He can practice absolutely perfectly in practice, but judgment will be reserved until the exhibition season begins.

Why are we so suprised?

Have we all assumed Smith would never throw a decent ball in his life? If Smith continues to play well in practice and carries that over into the preseason, then he just may start over Hill.
I said it before, Hill is good at coming in and playing as the underdog QB. So there is no reason to not throw Smith in there if he is confident and playing well. If he screws up then we know Hill is there to play the role he plays so well.
If Hill plays first and is unsuccessful as the #1 and then Smith plays poorly our season is over.

A Goat sighting!!!!!!

Couldn’t agree with you more brother, of course you know my stance on Alex Smith. If he feels comfortable in this offense like he did in 2006, then we have to assume it will be a much better year for him. With a more stable o-line, better receivers and a vastly improved defense, Smith could really shine if given the chance this year.

It sure would make things a lot easier if Smith or Hill can come in and play well. If we can find ways to win, and have an offense that can actually deliver the ball to it’s play makers, then we will have a solid foundation to build upon for the future. If we can get one of these guys to perform at a high enough level, then next off season we will be able to start filling in holes and adding much needed depth to areas like the O-line.

I like Alex Smith and still think that he can be a productive QB. I think the media and fans got on him from the get go when he wasn’t able to produce early on. I always felt it was wrong to start him his first season. Someone as young as he was needed time to mature and develop… and what happens, he gets injured and to me, seemed almost timid at times and didn’t act like he wanted to be here.

Now, with Singletary, he has shown that he wants to be apart of the team, and that he wants to be a leader.

As far as Shaun Hill, I’m gonna have to stick with my gut and say that he still has to prove himself as the starter over the coarse of a full season. When teams game plan against a team, thinking it’s going to be a JT O’sullivan, then a Shaun Hill comes in instead, well, it can create problems for the Defense.

That being said, I think Hill is a leader with quick instincts…. and that’s what you need as a QB, and that’s what Smith needs to show if he wants to take the job back from Hill.

Hill vs Smith???

Last year under Martz JTO was touted as the number one QB even before the preseason began. Presumably that was because JTO had more experience with the Martz offense however Hill was not even considered a front runner even after his positive showing in 07 when Smith was lost for the season…The knock on Hill last year at camp was that he didn’t “..show well at practice…” When JTO was benched Hill came in and did what needed to be done to salvage what was left of the season..

As you all know I am not a Smith fan however if he can at least provide some real competition with Hill for the starting job then he should get a shot at it but for me I am not putting to much stock in the OTA and mini camps yet. Can’t wait to see how things go in training camp when we see the first real scrimmage with pads. The other factor to consider is if the O-line can provide some real protection this year.

Another cosideration is that we are hearing little to nothing on the much talked about running game. If we can make that stick and get 100+ yards per game on the ground then the passing game will be much more effective and will bode well no mater who is under center.
