Linebackers
I think it means he’s one of the top 5. I don’t think they’re ranking them so much as pointing out the top 5. But good link.

Check the nfl.com site
The front page has a video. “Nothing Personal” I didn’t see Real Deal’s post until after I put mine up…

do you think he's number one
How about your top five fooch you tend to keep an open mind about things.
Everyone posting, who’s your top five MLB’s??

inside/middle linebackers
I’d say Patrick Willis is pretty close to number 1. One problem with comparing inside and middle linebackers is the difference in a 3-4 versus a 4-3. All 5 of those linebackers are very impressive.

there aren’t any seahawks fans to jump you, you can say it, P-Willy is the NFL’s best MLB.
It’s true.

I think Patrick Willis is overrated.
Yes, he’s good at tackling, but those numbers are heavily inflated because of a porous defensive line.

But definitely top 5.
But I don’t really understand what makes people think he’s #1.

Whose the top 5 MLBs?
Who do you rank higher?
Ray Lewis?
If so, my debate is he’s always had a phenominal defense surrounding him, and massive DTs taking up blockers in front of him.
Brian Ulracher?
No. Ulracher is a shell of his former self. It’s the Lance Briggs show in Chicago now.

No particular order:
Lofa Tatupu, Jon Beason, Demeco Ryans, hell, even that smelly Cardinal Karlos Dansby has been ridiculous as of late, Patrick Willis. Ray Lewis is probably still top 5, but I agree about Urlacher.
The thing about Willis is that he’s certainly a fine young defensive talent, but what about him makes people who make these sort of lists slobber on his nuts so much? That he was drafted way earlier than many of the other top ILBs? That he racked up a number of tackles that he would be hard pressed to repeat? I understand the Pro-Bowl/All-Pro things, but Tatupu’s done that his first three years too (and has far more interceptions than Willis in his career, leading one to believe he’s reasonably better in coverage) and yet he doesn’t get the time of day when it comes to the national media.

I don't disagree with the list
Jon Beason is a beast, DeMeco Ryans is a tackling machine, and Lofa Tatupu has been good the minute he entered the NFL. Barrett Ruud in Tampa is also very good, and D’Qwell Jackson ain’t half bad (at least at assisting in tackles).
Ray Lewis is still a top 5 guy, but Willis is getting so much hype because of his freakish abilities. I don’t think there is a faster middle linebacker, or a better tackling middle linebacker. Willis is no slouch in coverage, while he only has 1 INT, he has 15 PDs. The ability he has to roam sideline to sideline is incredible. The more you watch of P-Willy, the more you’ll see why he’s in argument for best in the league.
There are plenty of good youngs guys in the league, so the debate will go on for a long time.

True.
I guess that’s why everyone was so hyped about Aaron Curry before the draft. Has 15 pounds on Willis and ran the 40 only a second slower. But I still don’t think he’ll be more valuable than Julian Peterson.

Willis
The tackle numbers are definitely inflated given the defense. At the same time, he has some crazy athleticism. That tackle of Sean Morey in the Arizona game was simply amazing. A wide receiver had a 5-10 yard jump on him and he ran him down. It was OT and Rackers missed the subsequent field goal attempt. There was also the interception he returned for a TD last season against you guys. The speed combined with his ability to run down guys in the backfield is what gets people so excited.

The Morey run-down was a really awesome play,
but the INT return wasn’t really out of this world. He caught a ball deflected off a z-string receiver’s helmet (who was signed the week before) that was in the air for a long time and then outran some linemen and a trailing Leonard Weaver for the score. Impressive, but that’s something any LB worthy of being considered in the top 5 should be able to.

plays
I’m just saying the plays like that slowly start to add up in a fan’s head. The Morey run-down was much more impressive than the INT returned for a TD. But you add those together, some impressive behind the line tackles of running backs…it just adds up.

Makes sense.
And I only expect Willis to improve, but making crowning him the clear-cut #1 already seems a bit premature. And the other ILBs have all had some pretty freakish plays to their credit, too. I recall a game (I think vs. Atlanta) where Jon Beason was shaded offensive left, the Falcons ran right with the right guard pulling, and Beason ran all the way across the field, somehow threw an arm at the guard while he was off-balance and nearly caused him to fall over, and tackled Turner after a very short gain. Tatupu, somehow caught in a mismatch with Anquan Boldin, held tight coverage with him toe-to-toe for nearly 50 yards before Q hauled the in the reception due to the obvious advantage in jump-ball ability, and still managed to tackle him.

rankings
I think hometown bias will play in even more so when you’re talking about freakish athletes. Back in the day one of my favorites was Julian Peterson. I realize Peterson bounced back since the nasty achilles injury in San Francisco, but he was a monster before then. He made his bones against Tony Gonzalez when he shut him down. Peterson could play almost any position on defense anywhere from effectively to awesomely. People called guys like Jevon Kearse and Randy Moss “freaks,” but I think when Peterson was bouncing between safety, LB and DE, that was truly freakish.

yeah
and it’s a shame we let him walk in the first place.
It always hurt seeing Julian point to the back of his jersey when he made a play against us.
If he beats us as a Detroit Lion I will freak out.
I think the worst decision the franchise has ever made in terms of letting some one walk for nothing, to a division FREAKIN’ rival.
Here's to Joe Perry, all-time leading rusher for the 49ers.

One problem with comparing inside and middle linebackers is the difference in a 3-4 versus a 4-3.
The 4-3 MLB compares pretty well to the WILB in the 3-4. Considering the WILB is usually the playmaker out of the two ILBs, I think comparing Willis to most of the 4-3 MLBs is pretty fair.
I can’t believe Tatupu isn’t in the top 5 there.

Tatupu
must’ve been victim of a bad Seattle season. His numbers were down last season, probably why he’s being overlooked.

I didn't want to post another fan post and I attempted to reply on one that's closed
Is there anyway you can compare the 06 line to the current? The optimism won’t be realism until we win this division. Just asking what you think and I think it could be a gppd disussion

According to the ProFootballFocus ILB rankings,
- - Takeo Spikes SF
- - Patrick Willis SF
- - James Farrior PIT
- - Bradie James DAL
- - Gerald Hayes ARZ
- - Ray Lewis BLT
- - Lawrence Timmons PIT
- - E.J. Henderson MIN
- - Zach Thomas DAL
- - Channing Crowder MIA
PIT also has the #12 ranked ILB in Larry Foote, giving them three out of the top 12 ILBs. But it’s sure nice seeing both our ILBs ranked at the very top. Along with DE Justin Smith, they are the heart of the SF defense.

Foote
signed with Detroit.
Is there a link to this article? It seems like Spikes and Willis being 1, 2 is a tad extreme.

Pro Football Focus
I’m a big fan of Spikes, but that kills a lot of their credibility in mind unless there’s some kind of explanation with it.

me too
Takeo was a great add, I dont think hed be the best beside Willis. I look at it as though P Will would be the best WILB in a 3-4 setting and the top SILB would be Lewis and not Spikes, but I wouls rank him top 5 though!

Spikes had a fantastic year
well, perhaps fantastic is a stretch, but a good one.
I’d say Spikes is a top 10 ILB, but on the back end. Not the top. Definitely not #1. He had 96 tackles, 1 sack, and 3 INTs. I’m missing something if that’s the season the #1 rated ILB has. The Teddy isn’t going to get big numbers primarly, so Spikes’ numbers are impressive, but certainly not tops.
I’m glad Spikes resigned with the 49ers and remains paired with Willis, because they are quite a tandem in the middle.
