Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Probing the Nation (sounds gross)

Well, there certainly isn't a lot going on in the way of 49ers news lately, and some pretty exhausting discussions have taken place in the absence of relative material.  The Niners Nation is currently voting on our all-time great 49er members, and I thought it would be nice to change it up a tad.  This isn't so much 49er related, as it is 49er-fan related.  If something like this has been done before, my apologies.

Niner Fan Survey (you can answer all, or one of the questions in your comment, whatever you desire):

If the 49ers didn't exist, who would be your favourite NFL team to cheer on? (suicide is not an option)

Aside from the 49ers, what's another favourite sports team you are passionate about?  (you can't laugh if I say Washington Nationals)

If you could take any athlete from any sport, and convert that person to football, who would it be? (Serena and Venus Williams as our FS and SS, anyone?)

What's one superstition or tradition you have on gameday?  (Sitting on the couch in your underwear eating cheetos and drinking beer counts)

What current NFL player would you like to see most on the 49ers, that isn't already on the 49ers?  (how many QBs can we list in other words, but just name one)

Who is your least favourite current 49er?  (JTO is thankful he left town, and take it easy on Mark Roman)

How about least favourite 49er of all-time? (JTO is not so thankful anymore)

I think these questions are interesting enough to spark a discussion to occupy our time until some more meaningful news comes in.  Besides, it's always interesting to find out what other Niners fans think, sometimes.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Great idea

Might move this to the front page over the weekend.

If the 49ers didn’t exist, who would be your favourite NFL team to cheer on? That’s a tough one for me. Houston and Atlanta are two intriguing teams for me. As a DC area person for college I hated the Redskins, but was always intrigued by the Ravens.

Aside from the 49ers, what’s another favourite sports team you are passionate about? If we’re talking any sport, UNLV Rebels basketball. I’m a HUGE fan. For professional sports, it’s the A’s, although my passion has dissipated a bit in part because they’re struggling and in part because I no longer work for them.

If you could take any athlete from any sport, and convert that person to football, who would it be? How about Kevin Garnett? He’s 7 feet tall and has the ability to occasionally run the point in basketball. Imagine him as a receiver?

What’s one superstition or tradition you have on gameday? It actually changes from game to game. I would wear a jersey but that seemed to lead to losses, so I stopped for a while. Then I went to a Montana jersey I had and they were doing well. I’ll be sitting in a certain position when something good happens and I’ll try and avoid changing that position too much if things are still going well. Crazy crap like that.

What current NFL player would you like to see most on the 49ers, that isn’t already on the 49ers? QB is an easy answer to this. How’s about Ed Reed?

Who is your least favourite current 49er? I don’t really have a least favorite at this point. I’ll pose a slightly different answer and say the one who frustrates me the most is Vernon Davis. I don’t dislike him but he can be infuriating at times. As for Mark Roman (who I’d imagine will get several mentions), I don’t blame him for getting old. Feel bad the tread is coming off, but don’t dislike him.

How about least favourite 49er of all-time? Kevan Barlow

by David Fucillo on Jul 10, 2009 1:37 PM PDT reply actions

I'm not a 49er fan but I'll give this a shot.

If the 49ers didn’t exist, who would be your favourite NFL team to cheer on?
Besides the Seahawks of course, I suppose I’d go with the Panthers. I heart Jonathan Stewart, always was a fan of them and the Jaguars when the league expanded.

Aside from the 49ers, what’s another favourite sports team you are passionate about?
Seattle Mariners (MLB), but I really don’t follow them (or baseball in general) as much as I do the NFL.

If you could take any athlete from any sport, and convert that person to football, who would it be? LeBron James, make him a tight end since he was an All-State wide receiver in high school. Insert sexual innuendo here.

What’s one superstition or tradition you have on gameday? It’s sort of odd, but I always take off the jersey I’m wearing during halftime and don’t put it on the rest of the game. Long story involving the Seahawks giving up a lead in the second half the first time I put a jersey on, and finishing another team within a quarter and a half when I kept it on in the first half and took it off later.

What current NFL player would you like to see most on the 49ers, that isn’t already on the 49ers? Peyton Manning, because I think even he would struggle on the 49ers at times but it would be far more entertaining.

Who is your least favourite current 49er? Vernon Davis. Obviously a loud-mouth douchebag with little production to back it up. Even if he improves this season, a lot of 49er fans will still hate this tool. Honorable mention goes to Alex Smith.

How about least favourite 49er of all-time?
Terrell Owens.

Great Post Dre.

If the 49ers didn’t exist, who would be your favourite NFL team to cheer on? I hate to say it but probably the Raiders. Gotta stay loyal to Bay Area teams. I’d probably kill myself being a fan and seeing them take DHB over the Crab however. I wouldn’t last long.

Aside from the 49ers, what’s another favourite sports team you are passionate about? SF Giants. Beat those Nationals. LOL

If you could take any athlete from any sport, and convert that person to football, who would it be? Lebron James. I think he is the most physically gifted NON-football athelete in the world.

What’s one superstition or tradition you have on gameday? Always knock on wood when someone or I say Niners are gonna win, or they have to win, etc….don’t want to jinx a stupid INT or draw play from 3 yd line on MNF. (good riddance Martz)

What current NFL player would you like to see most on the 49ers, that isn’t already on the 49ers? Shawne Merriman (still holding out for TOP QB in draft next year)

Who is your least favourite current 49er? Barry Sims (please Boone take his spot)

How about least favourite 49er of all-time? Jose Cortez was a GREAT answer. Stupid kicker. Hard to not like a 49er, but since he was only there one year its safe to say.

Awsome Post

1. If the 49ers didn’t exist, who would be your favourite NFL team to cheer on? Hard one… I love watching the Pats. If I was going to be realistic I’d say the Raiders only because if the 9ers didn’t exsist, the Raiders would be the only Northern CA team. But being realistic is out of the question so I’m with the Pats.

2. Aside from the 49ers, what’s another favourite sports team you are passionate about? San Francisco Giants and Golden State Warriors

3. If you could take any athlete from any sport, and convert that person to football, who would it be? Ben Wallace to DE

4. What’s one superstition or tradition you have on gameday? I have to wear my 9ers long sleeve(The same one since 02’) with an away jersey over it.

5. What current NFL player would you like to see most on the 49ers, that isn’t already on the 49ers? Tom Brady

6. Who is your least favourite current 49er? Tie between Roman and Battle. Roman could’nt buy an int and Battle just stinks and I don’t want to hear all of the “but he has been the most consistent WR wev’e had since TO left” bullcrap because it isn’t saying much considering the 9ers WR corps up til last year sucked balls.

7. How about least favourite 49er of all-time? Romanowski. As much as I hate JTO, Romanowski was a dirty roid taking bafoon.

3. Ryan Clowe on the sharks, just to see him (expletive) people up.
4. Wear my P-willis jersey. I always wear it on sundays during the season.
5. Demarcus Ware. He’s just a really good do-everything linebacker, and would add a lot to the pass rush.
6. Zak Keasey. I think his dreadlocks make him look like a tool, and im a big fan of moran norris.

If the 49ers didn’t exist, who would be your favourite NFL team to cheer on? Already a pretty big Saints fan. Although you could call me a Brees bandwagoner – I was a Chargers fan before that and a Purdue fan before that.

Aside from the 49ers, what’s another favourite sports team you are passionate about? The A’s…that hurts to say though, because watching A’s games this year has been really depressing. Is it football season yet?

If you could take any athlete from any sport, and convert that person to football, who would it be? I’m sure this one has been overplayed enough by now, but I can’t help but buy into the media hype: Lebron James – NFL tight end.

What’s one superstition or tradition you have on gameday? Like green on St. Patty’s day, I always wear red on gameday.

What current NFL player would you like to see most on the 49ers, that isn’t already on the 49ers? Would it be too low of a blow to say Aaron Rogers? Cal guy…really thought we’d take him in 2005.

Who is your least favourite current 49er?
Dominique Zeigler. It’s astounding to me that a guy who so clearly defines practice squad fodder has such a cult following.

Aaron Rogers

I’m glad he’s doing well. He had a much better situation to go to in Green Bay, and could sit and learn from a true gunslinger, an NFL legend.

by SportsChicken on Jul 13, 2009 12:45 AM PDT up reply actions

You could tell there was never much tutelage going on there.

And even if there were, Favre has to be one of the worst guys a kid could learn from. The very model of a loose cannon his entire career, he can’t have much to offer in the way of football advice.

“Just find somebody that’s open and wing it to’em. If no one’s open, just gun it in somewhere and hope for the best.” (shudder)…a QB coach would have nightmares about that kind of thing.

ok a bad choice of words

but sitting for the amount of time A-Rod sat, definitely didn’t hurt his development, and if he had’ve been thrust into a starting role immediately, would he have panned out the same?

that’s very difficult to predict. just because there wasn’t much guidance from Favre, A-Rod still got a lot of time to learn the game, learn the playbook and learn how a QB operates an NFL offense.

Nice

I’ve been a Spurs fan ever since The Admiral too.

Here's to Joe Perry, all-time leading rusher for the 49ers.

by Andrew Davidson on Jul 12, 2009 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions

If the 49ers didn’t exist, who would be your favourite NFL team to cheer on?
- Jags. Their logo got my attention when I was a kid and I have followed them since.

Aside from the 49ers, what’s another favourite sports team you are passionate about?
- Oakland A’s is my #1 fav team ever. I also like the GS Warriors and SJ Sharks

If you could take any athlete from any sport, and convert that person to football, who would it be?
- LeBron James is too huge for his sport. He fits in perfect as a tight end.

What’s one superstition or tradition you have on gameday?
- If the 49ers are mounting a comeback, I will lock myself in my room and not talk to anyone until the game is over.

What current NFL player would you like to see most on the 49ers, that isn’t already on the 49ers?
- Tom Brady would be a nice choice, but I actually would like some MoJo-Drew up in here

Who is your least favourite current 49er?
- Alex Smith

How about least favourite 49er of all-time?
- Jose Cortez

-Giants

If you could take any athlete from any sport, and convert that person to football, who would it be?

What current NFL player would you like to see most on the 49ers, that isn’t already on the 49ers?
-Mario Williams. I loves me some pass rush.

Who is your least favourite current 49er?
-Roman, I guess

How about least favourite 49er of all-time?
-I remember basically nothing else about him, but I really hated Steve Stenstrom for some reason.

No big secrets here..

If the 49ers didn’t exist, who would be your favorite NFL team to cheer on?
I tend to root for the team closest to home as distasteful as is sounds I would likely be a Raiders fan. I know it is sick but I gotta call it like it is.
Aside from the 49ers, what’s another favorite sports team you are passionate about?
This one is easy.. Although I am a Giants fan but I can’t honestly say that I am passionate about baseball in general. My real other sports passion is auto racing. I love Indy car racing. I have been an Indy car fan even before football. I remember listing to the Indy 500 on the radio at family pick nicks and such.
If you could take any athlete from any sport, and convert that person to football, who would it be?
Well I have seen this done in for real. I have mentioned in a couple of other posts.. Bill Walsh was a strong believer in athleticism as a key to a good football player and he used to turn to Track and Field as place to find good athletes.. I recall two in particular Michael Carter ( shot put) and Renaldo Nehemiah ( hurdler). So that is where I would look for a start in the rough to convert to football.
What’s one superstition or tradition you have on gameday
I can’t say that I have a "superstition" but once upon a time when I had season tickets I did the obvious…TAIL GATE BABY and these days I just try to get as many of my chores and "honey do’s " out of the way so that I can focus on the game.
What current NFL player would you like to see most on the 49ers, that isn’t already on the 49ers
I would have liked to see Ely Brady as a Niner…
Who is your least favorite current 49er?
I am tempted to say A. Smith but he deservers this one last chance to prove himself. I can’t answer that yet. I will wait until the season start.
How about least favorite 49er of all-time? I have two
Trent Dilfer and JTO… No hesitation there…

I just realized, I didn't fill this out yet

If the 49ers didn’t exist, who would be your favourite NFL team to cheer on? Geographically speaking, I’d have to cheer for the Lions, but I think I’d choose the Bills there are sort of Canada’s team.

Aside from the 49ers, what’s another favourite sports team you are passionate about? The Washington Nationals, the San Antonio Spurs, the St. Louis Blues. Yep, I’m a weirdo.

If you could take any athlete from any sport, and convert that person to football, who would it be? I’d take Anderson Silva from the UFC and put him in at Free Safety. Something about him delivering a flying knee to a receiver over the middle excites me.

What’s one superstition or tradition you have on gameday? If I go to the game and watch it a friends house, I don’t take off my coat until the 49ers score a TD, revealing my jersey.

What current NFL player would you like to see most on the 49ers, that isn’t already on the 49ers? I know we need a pass rush, and I know we need a RT, and yep a QB too. But I’ll take Larry Fitzgerald (away from the Cardinals) first.

Who is your least favourite current 49er? I have to go with Kentwaan Balmer. I ripped him and ripped him and ripped him the night before the 49ers drafted him. Then the 49ers drafted him. I try to support the idea of a Balmer being productive, but I don’t like him.

How about least favourite 49er of all-time? since Lawrence Phillips. Closely followed by Lawrence “Bleepin!” Phillips.

Great Post

1) Steelers (moms a big steelers fan)
2) Chicago Bulls, UNC mens bball, Nebraska football, Red Wings, and the Red Sox
3) I’d take Ben Gordon and make him a safety or runningback
4) When im watching the game, the volume has to be on an even number or the niners will lose haha
5) DeMarcus Ware
6) Either Roman or that guy that wears no gloves or arm bands… it looks creepy
7) This is easy… David Loville!!

Wear my steve young jersey or any old jersey and having a footbal near my hands. In case the niners are having a good game i dont touch the remote control and i try to stay in the same position until the end of the game.

What current NFL player would you like to see most on the 49ers, that isn’t already on the 49ers?

Raiders but saying that fills dirty.

SF Giants

Usain Bolt height: 6’5’’
                      weight: 190 lbs
                     100 m : 9.69 Sub 4.3 40 yard

Copenhegan dip after a score and could only get rid of chew if the other team punted. I quit chew so now I just drink from start of game to end. Life is good. Beer is good.

Tom Brady he grew up as a NINERS fan.

Zac Keasey because he was picked by Martz and they let Moran Norris go.

Pick any kicker that lost the niners the game besides Nedney. And when Nedney leaves you could add him to the list. Until then he is my boy, go Nedney. Go NINERS.

4.3 40 yard

I’m pretty sure he can run the 40 faster than that.

by SportsChicken on Jul 18, 2009 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Just a conservative estimate

Any time under 4.3 is supper fast. 4.29, 4.21, 4.03 are all possible times he could run under the statement of Sub 4.3 40 yard. And Usain Bolt is supper fast. Thats all I ment.

If the 49ers didn’t exist, who would be your favourite NFL team to cheer on?
Either the Colts or the Eagles. The Eagles just because the fanbase is hilarious when they’re angry at Andy Reid.

Aside from the 49ers, what’s another favourite sports team you are passionate about?
Manchester United, Toronto FC

If you could take any athlete from any sport, and convert that person to football, who would it be?
Usain Bolt as a WR. Deep routes only.

What’s one superstition or tradition you have on gameday?
I have none. Not into the superstition thing.

What current NFL player would you like to see most on the 49ers, that isn’t already on the 49ers?
Brian Russell.

Who is your least favorite current 49er?
Vernon Davis. What a waste.

Least favourite 49er of all-time?
Well…..as a 49er fan I have to go with Jose Cortez. He was an awful kicker.

There are a lot, but read mine!

1. Jacksonville Jaguars. Became a fan the moment they drafted Maurice Jones-Drew.

2. I’m passionate about some Bay Area teams, what can I say? Giants, Warriors, Cal Bears, whoever’s playing the Yankees, Dodgers, or Lakers.

3. Converted athlete? Me and my cousin recently debated over something like this. I argued for Shaquille O’Neal at TE, because with his footwork, who’s going to stop him from catching a ball in the endzone? My cousin argued for LeBron James, and you know what, he was right. Gotta go with LeBron James at TE. 6’8’’, 260 pounds, clocked at 4.4 for the 40 yard dash, 44" vertical. He’d be like a bigger, badder version of Antonio Gates.

4. No superstitions on gameday. If I was playing, it’d probably be a different story.

5. I’d love to have an elite nose tackle named Williams. Pat, Kevin, Jamal, whichever. I’ll take Jamal.

6. Alex Smith. I could fill a small novel with the excuses that have been made for this guy. I’m really upset that Shaun Hill is not locked in as our starting QB and will have to compete for the job in training camp, even though everyone knows he doesn’t look great in practice but wins games, the exact opposite of Alex Smith, who if he wins the starting job, it will be because of how he looks in practice. I’m really hoping that Singletary doesn’t fall for that trap.

7. Lawrence Phillips. The Niners were gave this guy a second chance and he rewarded them by missing the block on the hit that retired Steve Young. And then he went back to prison. What a joke.

If the 49ers didn’t exist, who would be your favourite NFL team to cheer on?
Denver Broncos. I live in Colorado and it would be nice to be able to watch all of the games

Aside from the 49ers, what’s another favourite sports team you are passionate about?
Niners are actually my second passion, behind the Sacramento Kings (apparently I’m a masochist)

If you could take any athlete from any sport, and convert that person to football, who would it be?
I didn’t want to say LeBron, but I have trouble finding an argument against him

What’s one superstition or tradition you have on gameday?
Just to wear a Niners jersey every Sunday during the season

What current NFL player would you like to see most on the 49ers, that isn’t already on the 49ers?
I’ve always thought it would be great to have Tom Brady, and my research in Madden indicates that it would work well.

Who is your least favourite current 49er?
This is a struggle, but I think there have been some great arguments for this being Vernon Davis. Not that I hate the guy, but he frustrates the crap out of me.

How about least favourite 49er of all-time?
So many great options: Cortez, JJ, Woods, etc….but I have to go with Kwame Harris. I loathe the very idea that he spent so much time on the Niners roster.
