NCAA Football 10!

Thought I'd change things up a bit since we still have a few weeks till training camp. Picked up my copy of NCAA 10 this morning and I must say, it is awsome! The best yet. Given they didn't completely redue the game and there aren't too many changes as far as gameplay but then again the gameplay for NCAA Football has always been pretty good. It's the little things I noticed that make the game stand out. Erin Andrews ofcourse is a fox and is a nice smaller addition to the game. What I've enjoyed the most is the new creat-a-school feature. I am shocked with how easy it is to use no kidding. You have to have access to a PC in order to do it but once you're there it is fantastic. I was able to make an exact duplicate of my high school team and bring it to Div. 1-A. All the way down to the helmet logo which is perfect. Just in love with this game. The game is not perfect but there are enough changes to keep it more than interesting. So what are your thoughts for those of you who have gotten a hold of it?

Hmm

Well, the rosters are fudged, the bug regarding your team’s defensive players getting encroachment penalties when the opponent is running a hurry-up offense still remains, there are an inordinate amount of facemask penalties (even with facemask turned down to 0), and there is some odd code that allowed me to beat the snot out of Penn State on their turf with a created-team yet get plastered by Ball State at home.

Problems aside, the game is absolutely beautiful and I very much enjoy being able to play as the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, considering they haven’t had a football team in over 50 years. The Hokies look pretty fantastic, though some of the player ratings are somewhat unrealistic (Tyrod Taylor has a TAC of 84, which is very generous considering how inaccurate he was last year), and I’m pleased so far with the Dynasty setup. Overall, I’d prolly say NCAA Football 10 gets an 8/10, and it would be higher except for the obvious bugs.

i haven't played the game yet

I’m wondering if any of that has something to do with the gameplan selections. If you are playing aggressive on defense, the game is going to have more penalties for taking risks with the big hits and forced fumbles, and you’ll be penalized a little more frequently.

Here's to Joe Perry, all-time leading rusher for the 49ers.

Doesn't matter what gameplan selection you choose.

I’ve noticed it in all of them. Just had to adjust it in options and it works better.

Well

I tend to run balanced on D, sometimes even conservative, and I still see the penalties. Clipping is an issue on offense as well, with 3 in the last game that I played. I just feel like the penalties aren’t very realistic, with 0-1 false starts per game compared to 9 face mask penalties in the last game that I played (and I was definitely running balanced).

yuck

I don’t like the sounds of that either.

The Erin Andrews thing was cool for the first two post-game reviews.

Now it’s just annoying. Although, I never shared the nation’s infatuation with the chick, either. She just doesn’t do it for me, to be honest.

There are a lot of things that I’m pleased with, though:

-New tackling animations. While this is something they add every year, the fluidity of the 2010 additions is great. No longer will tacklers always wrap up perfectly and create clear, distinguishable “solo tackles”. You’ll see lots of guys get knocked onto their knees, tripped up and throw down, rather than dragged down.

-The new pocket AI. This is spectacular. I’ve been waiting years for offensive linemen to understand the meaning of the pocket, and this is the game that’s finally brought it to us. Tackles will seal off, and edge rushers will have a much harder time getting to the QB by simply rushing 7 yards deep and cutting inward. Likewise, QBs will be much more challenged while scrambling or roaming outside of their invisible safety zone. Also, there’s a new controller rumble that activates when defenders are closing in on the QB – this allows the player to keep his eyes down field and have a real feel for when the pressure is on its way.

-Improved downfield blocking. Screens have been completely revamped (in addition to having a wide array of screen plays added to the playbooks)! Kick returns have a fresh, realistic feel to them! WRs can actually be found seeking out safeties on runs of 10+ yards! I can’t place my finger on what exactly was changed, other than by simply saying that they removed the duh-dumb from blockers past the line of scrimmage, but the change is a welcome one.

-Game-specific strategy. Before, there was an option to select from a few choices like “No penalties”, “Block better”, “Get open” and the like that would present itself for one-time use after time outs. This year, there are much more specific strategies that are chosen during the pre-game (and can be changed at any time) that will last for the duration of regulation. There are choices for both offense and defense that will have aggressive, conservative and moderate effects on the way your players will perform. (For example, one of the offensive options is for wide receivers – you can have them A) focus on the catch – increasing their hands and catch-in-traffic ratings, but lowering their ability to break tackles and rack up the YAC, B) go for the big play – creating more drops, but greatly increasing their break tackle, elusiveness and truck ratings, or C) perform somewhere in between).

There have been plenty more additions and improvements…like the Build-a-Team feature that allows you to create a school online and import it to your 360 or PS3 for use in Dynasty mode, and what seems to be a vastly improved Online Dynasty system…but the ones mentioned are what stood out immediately for me.

My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.

I just hope

they can put out a decent Madden game this year, I’ve been let down by every single Madden since its come to this generation of consoles.

The strides they made in the NCAA game are impressive, and I hope they’ve done some similar improvements to Madden.

Agreed

Madden 10 did win upcoming sports game of the year at E3. And it is up against The Show and NHL especially so that is good news.

I've been playing it today

I haven’t had any problems with it. The tackling is a lot better and the D-line actually moves and I haven’t found any problems yet. I haven’t tried all the features yet. The juking is a little different, I personally haven’t had problems but my friend hates the juking

Go 49ers

Broken tackles are especially rare, I've noticed.

Playing as Cal in Dynasty mode, Jahvid Best can’t shake someone in the open field to save his life.

My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.
