Julius peppers! How Do ninersnation feel.
I know its been mention time and time again, But hey 49er news is at a stand still. While 49er news is in a drought I'm still entertaining the julius pepper idea. Im a huge fan of Manny Lawson, Even if he's under achieved as the 22nd overall pick. considering Peppers signed his tender, how do 49er fans feel about giving up 2 first round picks for an elite pass rusher. We have from preseason, up until week 6 to come to a decision if our pass rush is still worthless. By week 6 we should have a pretty good idea of how our pass rush will fair. Should we hold on to our 2 draft picks going into the 2010 season, or take a stab at an elite pass rushers whos still young. Even if we cant save the rest of the season. we can still sure up the future. or no? Peppers is a long shot but could he be worth it? with the addition of peppers would the defense be a force in the nfl. We were 13th overall. we're lookin at top 10 in 09. could peppers make our defense so scary that we go beyond being considered a bubble team, and become contenders? or is Peppers too risky of a transition considering hes a DE in a 4-3 defense, and isnt worth that risk since theres more holes to fill.

WHY?????
We have a chance next year to possibly shore up our future QB and a monster anchor to our NT postion (or FS/RT) for a long time. Why give up two starting players in the 21-23 year old range for a 30 year 4-3 DE WHO HAS NEVER PLAYED 3-4 OLB?
Hopefully Shawne Merriman has a subpar year coming off of the knee and the chargers let him go
It’s either now or never with peppers
aka Optimist Prime 09...........9ers (site decorum)
Merriman
I’d rather give up the two draft picks and sign a Franchised Merriman than give up two firsts (or even a first and some later round) for Peppers.
His body might be older than Peppers. All those steroids adds to much muscle to the body putting severe strain on the ligaments. If I’m not mistaken both his knees required season ending surgery.
I think his point was that Merriman is an already established elite 3-4 OLB and a pass-rushing demon,
while Peppers is a 4-3 end who may or may not make the transition to OLB successfully.

Peppers wouldn't even be worth 2 first round picks to a team with a 4-3 defense.

what I think about Peppers
I’ll sum it with a photo. Not that I think Peppers is a piece of poop, or some sort of contraption that picks up poop. Or a bag you put poop in. Peppers is more like a crazy set of hairy wrists. Definitely unwanted.

Here's to Joe Perry, all-time leading rusher for the 49ers.

i'd rather keep the picks
and take sergio kindle, george selvie, brandon lang, eric norwood, or another good pass rusher next year. as mcCloughan explained after the draft-day trade, next years class is a good one.
I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.
You're All Kidding Yourselves!!!
Peppers is EXACTLY the kind of player the Niners need. What evidence, exactly, are we looking at that tells us Peppers is anything less than an elite player? 2 First rounders may be a bit high, but as you may recall we just traded for Carolina’s 2010 1st rounder in the last draft, so it’s really just like giving up our opportunity to draft in the 1st round this year in exchange for perhaps the best pass rusher in the league.
Here’s a question: would you trade Manny Lawson and Kentwan Balmer for Julius Peppers?
Those are two recent 1st rounders. They may be late first rounders, but clearly the draft is a gamble and can yield varied results. I would be willing to give up the chance at drafting two question marks in the first round for a known commodity that can transform our offense into a top-10 overnight.

That’s the silliest logic, ever. No matter how you slice it, the 49ers have two first round picks. Trading both of them away results in them not having first round picks, regardless of who they belong to.
a known commodity that can transform our offense into a top-10 overnight.
Peppers is a “known” commodity in a 4-3. There is VERY little that can guarantee he’ll make a flawless transition into a 3-4. You can’t just say “you’re an OLB now, keep doing what you’ve been doing” and expect it to work. Two first round picks is a ridiculous price to pay for that amount of uncertainty.

And don’t forget to mention the fact that he’ll financially cripple the team which will not allow them to resign their own (young) players.
Peppers is better suited for a team looking for a “one year wonder” season.

So, I assume you don't think highly of Manny Lawson.
Did you realize that he played DE in college and for the most part, his ineffectiveness in the NFL could be attributed to the fact that he is struggling as an OLB?
The exact same could happen to Peppers, except you have to give up another first round pick and pay out a king’s salary as well.
