The Hangover: The worst next-day feeling...
As I sit here in front of my computer, my head pounding, my eyes still blurry, my body wracked in pain/weakness, desperately trying to think of an article topic, I tell myself "I will never, ever, ever drink again." Who would willingly do this to themselves? Sure, it was fun for a little bit, but in the end you are more miserable than you ever could imagine...
And then it dawned on me; drinking is like rooting for a football team. For a while, life is good. You are out having fun, getting score/drink after score/drink, living it up and loving life. Hell, you even have an opportunity to warm up before the drinking/football really begins (pre-gaming/pre-season). Then, you hit a wall. Drinks/scores don't come as easily, and when they come, they don't do much for you. Sure, you might get a few nice drinks/wins down the line, but in the end only one person has a fantastic night, while the others go home with a 4/10, and wake up more miserable than the night before.
Wow... that analogy went a bit too far...
So what's the point? Why am I making some of you think about your hangovers when all you want to do is talk about football? Well, in this second to last weekend before training camp gets going, we are going to begin at the bottom of the barrel. Nation, I want you to tell me your worst "Morning After" feeling. How awful did you feel after last year's MNF game vs Arizona? How awful did some of you feel the day after Steve Young retired? What about a crushing playoff loss? I want to hear about your worst "Morning After". Consider this similar to the JTO thread, a cathartic release of tension, before endless optimism takes this site over. Only without the swearing.
Now excuse me... I'm going to go dig a 20 foot hole to climb into...

The day i found out Rice wouldnt be retained.
I was born in 1985, the year he was drafted and although i was too young to remember his early years he was one of the first forty niners i knew and stayed with the team throughout my childhood. When i was 5 my dad let me name my dog, I chose Joe Montana but Joe was pushed out the door a few years later and Jerry became the cornerstone of my fandom.
Question. i think it was steve young but cant remember and havent been able to find it online, Who did Kevin Greene headbutt on the sidelines. I believe Greene was injured and i know he wasnt wearing a helmet but the other player was. Anyone remember who the other guy was, was it Young? It was probably 12 or 13 years ago.

Jim Druckenmiller
The 49ers were playing the Rams. It was Druckenmiller’s only start as a 49er I believe.

Thank you,
did Greene’s forehead start bleeding? Either way that guy was awesome.

The morning after...
The MNF game, SF vs. ARI, I was at a buddy’s house watching the game. Typical monday night evening, watching the monday nighter. I had no expectations for the Niners to do what they did, nor end up a yard short of a victory.
I was so drained and devestated, that I called in sick the next day. I still don’t think I’ve recovered.
Here's to Joe Perry, all-time leading rusher for the 49ers.

My worst game
I probably told this already.
Late eighties. Wife was working that Sunday, I was at home watching the game with the baby. I had a fire going in the fireplace. The mortar between the bricks in the fireplace had been falling away for years, and sometime during the second half the fire got through the cracks and into the wall. There I was holding the baby as firemen were axing their way through the side of the house into the living room.
The wife was really pissed when she got home, blaming me for setting the house on fire and endangering the kid while I was paying attention to the game (all true, but it was the Niners playing). It took more than a decade after that, but I think that that day was the beginning of the end of our marriage.
And the Niners lost too. It was one of those games back then when the Falcons won in the last minute with a hail mary. There I was with the wife clutching the baby and giving me these cold stares while I’m trying to find out from the firemen if they’d heard who won the game. Bad day all around.

Games
I honestly don’t know. There are plenty of times when I’ve been furious right after the game (the Arizona loss last year), but usually the anger wears off. Those losses to the Packers in the 90s drove me crazy. I realize the Packers were good, but I still didn’t have to like it.
Yess, that Arizona loss, Slowly I turned, step by step. and you know the rest...
That was it for me, I have been through the Montana leaving and retireing thing, and you know I know that with his concussions Steve would be done and was really hoping so because I didn’t want him wind up hurting himself and his family. Even then I had hope.. I survived the all the other crap that we Yea all Niner fans know what we went through since then.. I mean ALL THE CRAP we went through until mid year last year. There was a glimmer, just a glimmer of what might have been,, then they missed a game winnging and season saving TD by a frigging yard man,, a frigging yard (Frigging Martz) the great Genius was clueless. Damn the phrase " the whole nine yards" really has a true meaning to me.
Man my head still hurts,,
I guess that is why I am so passionate about the hope of this year…

Oh man...
this was the worst experience of my life. if any of you remember back in 2003, we had a sunday night game at seattle. I bet so much money that i can’t remember. Well we were down 17-0 at half, and i thought it was pretty much over since it was at seattle on a prime time game. All of a sudden, garcia leads us back into the game and we finally got the lead at 19-17. I was jumping around and talking trash to my BOSS. Then the hawks scored a field goal, and we were driving on the ensuing possession right after the 2 minute warning. Then Hearst fumbles right after the warning and its all over. Of course we lost 20-19, but that wasn’t the worst part about it. The words I said to my boss were so bad, that the next morning i went into the office…..My boss was wearing an alexander jersey and made me do everyone’s work and i lost at all my money….man that was the worst experience of my life

just a few
first i hate how those scumbag yorks forced rice/montana out of frisco. i hate knowing the yorks are the owners. bad taste in my mouth everyday until they’re either dead or gone. i also hated losing all those playoff games to the packers. this is why i’m glad brett favre is continuing to ruin his legacy by being such a gay clown. also, of course last yr’s arizona game. i’ll just stop here :)
"There is no pressure. Pressure only exists when you're not prepared."
-The Samurai
brett favre isn't ruining his legacy.
10 years from now people will only remember him as a Packer, unless he takes another team to the superbowl which would only help his legacy.
although now that i think about it, brett farve might still be playing 10 years from now. they started up that UFL…
I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.
I'm sure people would like to think that Favre will only be remembered as a Packer...
But they said that about Rickey Henderson, too…and there are plenty of baseball fans out there who can’t shake the image of a 46 year old Rickey playing for a AA farm club.
Truth is – the kind of media coverage that Favre has gotten during his last couple un-retirements may in fact have been enough to tarnish his image forever.
My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.
The absolute worst!!!
In the first playoff game in 2002 against Tampa Bay coach Steve Mariucci ordered the 49ers to run out the clock at the end of the first half. The 9ers were behind and had the ball near midfield, at about their own 40 yard line, with about a minute to go. I was disgusted with Mariucci for not trusting his team enough to let them at least try to get three points, or maybe six. I was sure he had humiliated his team and if left up to me I would have fired him.
the day SF drafted alex smith
as if the 2-14 season wasn’t bad enough we have to go and waste a first overall pick.
I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.
who did you want them to take?
2005 was an overall bad draft class. And if you say Rogers – he would be just as bad as Smith given the situation. And if you say Ware or Merriman, than I ask do you really think an OLB should go #1 overall????
The best answer was to trade out of the pick, which, to the best of my understanding, McNolan tried to do but no one wanted it.

knowing what i know now
about how each player turned out and who was available in later rounds, i probably would say demarcus ware, but at the time i wanted aaron rodgers. i don’t think he would have been “just as bad given the situation” because i think he’s more talented, simple as that. i’m not saying he would have done well right off the bat, but better than smith absolutely.
and as for the OLB going #1 overall thing, i don’t care what position he plays. he’s done more for his team so far than any other top prospect in that draft. and as a pass-rush specialist, it would be more like taking a DE first overall anyway.
I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.
Having the first pick in the draft
just isn’t what it used to be. Quite honestly, any quarterback the Niners picked up that year would have been doomed. I was a Rodgers rooter, too. I remember how the camera kept coming back to him sitting, waiting. Then he had to sit and wait in Green Bay. Little did he know that if he’d gone to SF that he’d get chewed up.
By the way, even though I’m rooting for Hill I’m beginning to feel that Smith might actually become a decent QB. It helps to have receivers and an o-line.

I am also cautiously optimistic
I admit to giving up on Smith in 07 and was totally convinced that he would be gone by now. Since he has redone his contract and appears to have regained some confidence and early reports that he is perfoming better, he may have a shot.. I really doubt that he can be a starter but stranger things have happend, however we need to see what happens in camp and pre season. So I can’t really say at this point that his draft would be a
“HANGOVER” just yet but I am reaching for the aspirin..
by WC-Ninerhead on Jul 19, 2009 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions
Iwas upset about that pick too
I had been hoping for Braylon Edwards, but that was because I had been so excited for Leinhart that I hated all the other QBs after Leinhart went back to school.
Never forget: I am a complete idiot
Watching Steve Young get hit
by Aeneas Williams. I knew that he was done for when that happened.
Last seasons MNF game was up there too.
Rice being forced out.
All those losses to the Packers in the playoffs.
No Eddie getting indicted?....
That’s a good enough reason to stay inebriated.
Well, we're waiting....
Craig's fumble.
1990 NFC Championship. Maybe some here are too young to remember it, but this had to be…. THE WORST. Seconds away from a third straight Super Bowl berth, before the uncharacteristic gaffe by one of (if not THE) best RBs in franchise history. Watching the Giants nickel-and-dime their way into FG territory with a backup QB (Hostettler) while our HOF starter and stud backup watched helplessly from the sidelines… ugh. And losing to a team that scored 5 FGs, no TDs?! Bleech.
I remember going to high school in a haze for the next two or three days. My buddy was a Giants fan, and he tortured me relentlessly in the 5 classes we shared together.
1993 NFCC loss to dalASS...
.. would be a close 2nd. I was doing study abroad in the UK, spent days trying to find a TV on campus that would show the game in the wee hours of the AM, convinced my dorm-mates to let me monopolize it for a few hours, and then watched my team’s ass get handed to them for the 2nd straight year, vindicating Jimmy Johnson’s trash talk in the process. Painful. What made it worse was that I began to fear the dynasty was REALLY over — little did I know they’d win their 5th 12 months later.
1970 Championship game v Dallas
I was nine years old and though I don’t remember so many details now, I do remember crying my eyes out. From that day forward, ever before “America’s Team” was uttered to foul the air, I hated Dallas with all my might.
There are a lot of other dismal hangover playoff losses, but another that stands out is the 1983 playoff loss to the Redskins. I can still remember the PI call against Lott for a pass that sailed 10 feet over their heads.
To be perfectly honest:
I reserve Sunday’s pretty much as my “Drinking Days” watching my beloved Niners. I usually get pretty damn buzzed if not totally intoxicated every Sunday watching the games. So for the past lets say 3 years, you can take a wild guess how many times I woke up with a headache going to work dreading the fact that I have to hear all the freaking Cowboy fans making fun of my Niners losing once again. I am sooooo ready for a descent season by this franchise, or at least .500 for cryin out loud. Then maybe the hang over “headache” wouldn’t be so bad. The last good memory of a hangover was a Monday night game against Pittsburgh in which I had a 100 dollar bet with a co-worker and actually won. I believe Tim Rattay was our QB at the time and Terrell Owens had a huge day for us. That hangover wasn’t so bad collecting my 100 bucks going to work the next day.
GO NINERS.
