The Sporting News column on Vick is whack
Vick will not come to the Niners.
I actually have no problem with him returning to the NFL and getting another shot. He served his time. But he is not coming to the Niners. I’m just saying.

True ...
… in any case, the GM has already ruled it out, hasn’t he? It seems to me, as someone who pores over every word on the web about the Niners, that the local media (Maicco, Barrows, the Chronicle, even the NFC West blog on ESPN to an extent) are the only ones worth looking at. Every mention of the Niners in the US national media just seems to be written by people who have no real clue what’s going on with the team and just lazily toss out assertions like “the 49ers haven’t got a QB so probably they will go for Vick”. That’s it? That’s the argument? Without even bothering to look up that the club have said they are definitively not pursuing him?
I’m in the UK and I don’t find it hard to follow what’s going on with the Niners, and it’s not my job – I follow the news because I love it, in and amongst a 60-hour week which is my actual work. Imagine if I was, firstly, in the US, and, secondly, had a job writing about the sport. I reckon I’d just about be able to broadly track 32 teams. I might even enjoy it, instead of coming across as a bored hack, throwing out lazy cliches.
National media
In regards to your comment about US National Media on the 49ers, to quote Ed McMahon: You are correct sir!

I'm going to go out on a limb
and say that I would like to see Michael Vick as a 49er. I don’t know why, I just would.
Ok, I do know why. I think it would be nice to have a Michael Vick Wildcat package for about 10 plays per game.
And another thing, Michael Vick was the first guy to go into Lambeau Field and beat Brett Favre in a Playoff game. Thank you Michael Silver, for reminding me! I like players that can beat the Packers in the playoffs. Wonder why I’m a Niner fan? ;)

I'm not saying I would not like Vick ...
I would, actually. He’d be a good fit for the Niners, imo. We need a QB, he’s a Pro Bowl QB, Coach Sing loves to reform a bad boy, and he’s as bad as they come. He’d be a good signing. However, the point is, it’s been ruled out, so the Sporting News piece is ill-informed.

I know our GM said its ruled out
but is anything ever really ruled out in the NFL?
That’s not very good basis for journalism, so I understand your point, and agree. It’s not news unless it happens, there’s no reason speculating publicly about something the GM has “closed” the door on.
