Finally an interview with T Marvel Smith

On the 49ers official website, "49ers.com" you can watch the interviewing of Marvel Smith that was posted on the website yesterday.

He has the type of aggression we need for our O-line to succeed in being in the top group of O-linemen in the NFL.

Personally I feel that his impact on the 49ers this season at RT will be greater than I had suspected earlier in the offseason, "maybe it's because of the more time he has had to recover from his back surgery and the progression of it".

So I'm going to throw this question out there for everyone to debate on.

How effective do you think Marvel Smith wil be this year?

"when i close my eyes i picture Marvel blowing a guy off his feet while Frank Gore blasts down the right sideline for a 25 yard or more gain" =)

Best case scenario...

… Smith plays like Jennings played in ‘06. Worst case scenario, he plays like Jennings didn’t play in all those other years. Back issues are funky, and they can definitely linger. It’ll be interesting to see how he handles training camp and the preseason games and how much playtime the coaching staff thinks he needs.

I wonder why the 49ers signed him to be RT.

From what I know about Smith, when healthy, he’s a good to great pass-blocker but ineffective run-blocker. Seems more like a prototypical left tackle if you ask me.

Dependability/consistency.

I think the 49ers were aiming for continuity here. It’s all pure speculation, but it makes some sense in my head. Staley’s not terrible at LT and has room to grow. He also doesn’t have an injury history, so it’s got to be comforting for a QB to know the guy protecting your blindside will be there week after week.
