49ers sign third round draft choice, running back Glen Coffee

And then there was one.  The 49ers announced today that they have signed third round draft choice Glen Coffee to a four year contract.  I haven't found the details yet, but will add them when I get a chance.  Here are some quick background details from the 49ers.

Coffee (6-0, 209) was an All-SEC selection and 2008 Doak Walker Award semi-finalist with the Crimson Tide. While at Alabama, he played in 35 games (17 starts), finishing his career with 2,107 rushing yards on 410 carries with 14 touchdowns and 42 catches for 351 yards and two touchdowns.

Coffee tallied 1,383 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in 2008. His rushing yardage tied Shaun Alexander as the second-best total in school history, while his 5.9 yards per carry in 2008 ranked sixth all-time. In 2007, he played in 9 games rushing for 545 yards and four touchdowns, along with 18 catches for 118 yards and a touchdown. Coffee was granted a medical redshirt in 2006 after recording 179 rushing yards and 91 receiving yards as a true freshman.

And that leaves Michael Crabtree.  Rookies report tomorrow so things are definitely getting tight.

Fantastic!

I see the 9ers turning into a 2-headed monster at RB muh like the Titans and Panthers(Love em). Unfortunately I see that at the end of Gore’s contract his best days will be over and it will be time for someone maybe Coffee to take over with someone else.

And I don't like to be the 1st to admit that either

I love Gore. Have his jersey and all but…. that’s the way it goes.

This is good

Not so sure we have an instant 2-headed monster.

I think this was also very much expected.

But how long will Crabs\Crabs Agent wait?….

Nothing wrong with that....

I bet we hear that on Fox this season.

Well, we're waiting....

It made me laugh.

Then again, that’s usually a telltale sign of a terrible pun.

Frank and Beans!

Gore and Coffee

I forget who originally said it, but I read it from someone here at NN.

Oh that is a perfect backfield nickname.

Gotta have Frank and Beans down there.

Too bad it reminds me of Something About Mary...

But then again, Mary was a 9ers fan. It was meant to be….lol

Not necessarily the end of Gore

I see Gore getting 1600+ all purpose yards again this year, but I see Coffee getting about 700-800 yards with at least 10 touchdowns. I see him in the capacity of Marion Barber (2007), Lendale White, Jonathan Stewart, etc. Gore will start games, but Coffee will leach carries inside the 20 and get some heavy carries in the late 2nd half if we have any sizeable lead. Gore will average about 90 yards rushing, 30 yards receiving, and 0.5 total touchdowns per game. Coffee will average 40-50 yards per game and .75 rushing touchdowns. Just my $0.02. Sounds like Deangelo Williams/Jonathan Stewart 2.0

Coffee getting about 700-800 yards with at least 10 touchdowns

Jesus Christ, can we stop with these ridiculous expectations, already?

My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.

One problem.

The 49ers don’t have Jordan Gross, Ryan Kalil, Brad Hoover, etc.

And those would be excellent numbers for a starter, let alone the 2 in a 1-2 punch.

Agreed

There’s no way Coffee gets close to those numbers unless Gore gets hurt.

I'm cool with the Gore

prediciton at 1600 total yards (rush+receiving), but the Coffee prediction of 10 TDs is bold. Really bold.

We have two steady OL (Heitmann and Staley), one developing rookie (Rachal), an injury plagued FA (Smith), and two underachieving riffraffs (Baas and Snyder). Moran Norris is a good addition, but is our offense going to be good enough to get Coffee 10 TD opportunities?

I don’t think so. I’d expect a little less form Coffee, like 5 TDs. The 700-800 yards I assume is total yards, and I think it’s a tad high. While I feel the offense will be running the ball quite a bit in 2009, I don’t think Coffee will rush for much more than 400 yards, and I certainly don’t see him getting 300 in receiving yards (Gore is still our best receiving back after all, and 300+ from Gore is likely).

Having said all of that, I would certainly love to see what you predict happen. I just think its a bit out there.

I think...

… 300-450 yards and 5 TDs out of Coffee should be regarded as a very successful rookie season.

Stuff them up the middle

Great one-two punch of Gore and Coffee with Sheets as third string what a rushing attack, lets stuff it to them.

so did they release anyone to make room for Coffee?

3 days ago they had to release Lewis Baker to make room for Nate Davis on the roster…
