Brett Favre staying retired: Effect on 49ers-Vikings?
FOOCH'S NOTE 4:55PM: As much as I don't care about Brett Favre staying retired or not, hudd07 raises an important discussion point, thus the reason for the promotion (and adjusted title hudd07). This thread is not about whether you like Brett Favre or not. It's about the Vikings-49ers matchup.
What does this mean for our game vs. the Vikings? I think that could be put down as a W for us now. That's good news for us. My opinion is the Vikings drop at least 4-5 spots in the rankings which should put them in the late teens which is where I think the Niners should be. Could be an interesting matchup now.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

but we have Willis......
He seems to keep Peterson in check. Hopefully he can do it again this year. Peterson had one of his worst games vs. us.
it wasn't just one of his worst games,
it was flat out the worst game a hall-of-fame running back has ever had. 14 carries for 3 yards.
oh, and the 49ers still lost by 20, so Willis keeping AP in check doesnt mean you can chalk it up as a W.
I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.
Please don't forget we have an offense
I believe we will have the horsepower that we didn’t have last year, and we will score 21+ and our defense will hold the vikes to 17 max. I am calling this a W for the niners
We’ll still beat ’em.
But the way Favre sucks these days, it might have been easier to beat them with him as their QB.
Meanwhile, here’s how Minnesota fans are reacting (no site decorum warning) – Drew Magary hears that Favre has just Lead His Team On for the Last 8 Months
"Those boos really motivate me to make something happen." - Bonds
We would've beat em if they had Favrererreeraa
Did anyone see the implosion that was the Jets vs. 49ers game last year? Favre sucked. He was throwing punts in the air. Given, Minn does have a stud in Peterson but having Favre would’ve changed the way they play offense. I think we win either way. The only reason we lost to Minn. 2 years before is because Trent Dilhole was the Starter. Once he went down and Hill was put in the game, the offense was quite successful although it was too late by then to put together a win.
Fans stuck in the 80's are lame. Respect the past, live in the now.
I just watched the jets game
favre sucked big time. we would have been better off if he had signed with the Vikes.
Another reason we lost to the Vikes 2 years ago was because of that [site decorum] chester taylor, 80-yarder anybody?
Agreed
But besides that run, they didn’t do jack crap.

Dilcrap
That’s why I think that if Nolan had any back bone at all he would’ve put Hill in there sooner. It would’ve been a different story.
Fans stuck in the 80's are lame. Respect the past, live in the now.
ahh...
don’t be so hard on the guy…there were times when i wanted to kill him you can be assured of that…but Nolan was a good guy, terrible with timeouts, but a good guy.
and up rode a camargue horse named Victory, upon the magnificent beast sat a triumphant rider, that rider's name: Noodle Arm.
Oh don't get me wrong...
he seems like a great guy but unfortunately it’s about football. He just didn’t make good decisions as a head coach. I think if he would’ve pulled JTO out earlier last year and stuck Hill in there, he may have prolonged his departure.
Fans stuck in the 80's are lame. Respect the past, live in the now.

I would have taken the W even if Favre was there
We kicked his ass with NJ last year, we would have done it again. Whatever Minn does this year will not reflect on weather or not they had Favre. As a matter of fact, I think he would have hurt them.
Crabtree, Morgan, and Jones will have their coming out party
the front four in Minnesota is dangerous especially for our o line. however their dbs are suspect. the williams brothers will miss four games so im hoping they won’t be firing on all cylinders. I think this will be the best passing game next tto the rams all year

Winfield
It’ll be interesting to see when he starts to hit the wall known as age.
You're right.
Perhaps after the Vikings/49ers game I might eat my words and have to say Antoine Winfield was a stud cornerback.

Cedric Griffin
isn’t a slouch.
The Vikings starting two CBs are pretty good. Winfield, at the very least, can still tackle with the best of them at corner. I know that doesn’t say much, but at least he’s bringing down the guy that’s making the catch, or providing solid run support.

I think there should be more options in the poll
along the lines of:
1. Thought we’d win, still think we’ll win
2. Thought we’d win, now I think we’ll lose
3. Thought we’d lose, still think we’ll lose
4. Thought we’d lose, now I think we’ll win
After all, you’re asking what effect Favre staying retired has on our expectations for the outcome of the game – to find that out, you’ll have to know what those expectations looked like before that latest piece of news.
Also – who really believes this is the last we’ve heard from Drama Queen Favre?

No offense, but who the hell knows?
And right now I think that Sage guy is probably a better quarterback than that mint julep guy.

Desciptive poll
Yes that would be much better. If the Vikes come in 2-0 they win. Anything less and they lose. If the Vikes can’t knock off the Browns and Lions than they certainly have no business beating the Niners.
GregP
At the game in Minneapolis
I will be there, who else will?
Niners Big L
The Vikings will destroy the Niners with or without Favre. There are few teams in the league with worse QB situations than the Vikes and the Niners are one of them. Alex Smith is a weak waiste of space and Shaun Hill, who is Shaun Hill? If you not a Niner fan no reason to care.
The Viking D is far superior, at almost every posistion. Even with Patrick Willis I’ll take the combo of EJ, Greenway and Leber over the San Franny LB unit. Better running back and better receivers on the Vikes. Not to mention Visanthe Shiancoe is better than Vernon Davis.
Sounds like some Niner hopefuls lookin for hope where there is none. Vikings win by 14pts plus.
GregP
Sorry, Vikings fan.
But Frank Gore is going to run right through the paper-thin Williams Wall, Joe Staley is going to shut down Jared Allen to no sacks, and Patrick Willis is going to hold Adrian Peterson to less than 10 yards again. You may not know who Shaun Hill is but I promise you’ll never forget him as he torches your secondary as he throws TDs to ORotY Michael Crabtree and Comeback Player of the Year Vernon Davis

Gore and more
Gore has never ripped through the Willams wall. Yes the Niners put nine in the box to stop AP and forfitted the game b/c of it. I believe the Vikes won that game by two TDs or more, with open recievers all over the field and a 90yard run by C.Taylor.
However with Crabtree, a better V.Davis and better QB play this game might end up a shoot-out. The Vikes secondary is good but not great and you want to attack them over the middle. That is where I presume Crabtree will do most of his work. It will be a good game.
GregP
No, it won't be a shootout.
This game will end in a blowout for the 49ers. Patrick Willis basically nullifies the Vikings rushing attack, so for the sake of posterity let’s say they’ll total less than 50 yards. Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels are both worse than Alex Smith, and that’s bad. So they aren’t going to do crap against Nate ‘Highest paid CB in the league’ Clements and Dashon ‘Future Pro-Bowler’ Goldson in the secondary. Meanwhile, Gore is going to prove why he’s the best back in 49ers history and Shaun Hill is going to throw for TDs at will. 7-3 record as a starter and QB rating similar to Eli Manning, Jay Cutler, and Donovan McNabb doesn’t lie.

We will see
If A.Smith is better than T.Jack & Sage, than he must have had at least one winning season starting? Nope. A Smith sucks. Hill has upside and is much stronger. Hill will start.

I wouldn’t trade you The Pathfinder Blu Ray for Tarvaris Jackson. I’d think about for Sage.

Pfinder
That is T.Jack’s new nickname, Pathfinder. It’s just to bad if his first option isn’t open he can’t find his second. So he looks for a path to run. Hopefully not getting body slammed along the way.
Hill has to be better than most think, if the Niners didn’t bother to bring in anyone else they must see something in him. Are they holding out for Tebow next year?
I’ll trade you Sage for the “Back to the Future Trilogy”, on Blue Ray of course.

the Niners
tried to sign Kurt Warner remember, so its not as though they didn’t try to bring in someone else. The someone else they wanted was instructed by God to stay in Arizona.
I personally would rather have Jevan Snead if the Niners are going to land a QB from the SEC next April (if he declares).
The team also picked up development project Nate Davis in round 5, but I definitely think next year is the draft the 49ers think long and hard about a QB in the first round, if both Smith and Hill don’t provide much.
Like the Vikes, the Niners went after a grey-beard that has long been a division rival, and like the Vikes, were titty-twisted by the QB. At least for the 49ers, it didnt take until days before training camp to figure out Warner was staying with Arizona. Favre put the Vikings team and fans in suspense by taking his s.a.t. deciding. Typical Favre though.

hey man
This is the 49ers blog, i see you’re new to the blog.. I am a fellow Vikings fan, and this is not how we are.. We don’t appreciate when other people come into our house and crap on our site, so we don’t go onto other people’s blogs and crap on theirs..
This is a logical question about a team who, I respect, and there’s no need to put them down, especially since the season hasn’t even started…
And I love the Vikings, and I love EJ Henderson, but come on, Patrick Willis is amazing. Let’s be realistic, E.J. is good, but he hasn’t done enough to be considered at the Willis level…
Just to wrap it up, I’d also like to say, how can you even compare our QB situation? If you haven’t been watching the news lately, you would see that our God awful coach has been lobbying for a geezer to come on our team and “save us”.. Okay, so he didn’t come over, (THANK YOU GOD). Do you really have that much faith in our QB’s even when our coach doesn’t?
Sorry 49er fans, this is ridiculous and I hope ya’ll have a great season and look forward to a great game.
What up?

EZ Jake.
I said I would take the collection of LBs the Vikes have over the group San Fran has. P. Willis is awesome, but who else? Yes P.Willis would be the best of all of them individually.
I know this is a 49er blog, but countless times on the Vikes blog people compare their team as better than ours. Nothing wrong with an outside view. Nothing wrong with comparisons, unless your scarred.
I am not crapping on this site at all. I just think it is a little over-optimistic for Niner fans to think they will beat the Vikes, soley based on Brett Favre not coming over. Especially when the Vikes are better at most positions.
I have a certain friend who visits this site and I certanly respect the tradition and Championships the Niners have won.
I guess it is fair to say our QB situations are almost the same, I just have a real distaste for A.Smith so hopfully Hill is the Niners man. When a coach (Chilly) steadily improves a team, he is not God Awful! I see the same possibility for Singletary and I happen to like his grab the bull by the horns mentality. Heck I might take him over Chilly?
The Niners could win the division this year, as their talent level has gone up and only the Cards could match them. If the Niners can get more pressure up front on Warner, thats all they need to beat them.
The Vikes probably won’t win by 14, but should win. I admittidly got a little worked up that mediocre teams think that now Favre isn’t signing, the Vikings will become easy pickens. They werent last year with the guys they got now.
Good luck Niners. I see 9-7 in your future. Will that be enough to win the West?
GregP
even if it doesn't win the division
I’ll take 9-7 right now. What’s .500 feel like Vikings fans? The 49ers haven’t been there in a while.

I like the Vikings roster but . . .
There QB situation is awful and whenever it is working their coach jumps in to mess it back up. Yes, even the crappy teams believes the Vikings QB situation will screw the pooch that week giving their team a win.
"Patrick Willis is amazing. Let’s be realistic, E.J. is good, but he hasn’t done enough to be considered at the Willis level…"
Actually, Patrick Willis hasn’t done enough to be considered at the Willis level. In many statistical measures, E.J. is a comparable or better ILB.

Hey VikesPma
Whats the deal with the Williams wall? Are they going to be suspended or not, could you explain that to us over here?
Go 49ers
Drawn out Wall
They probably will be suspended for two games at least. They are trying to say the NFL wrongfully withheld information about Starcaps, but in the lawsuit are saying it somehow goes against Minnesota state law. I have had enough though. Goodell is too much with the iron fist, but the Williamses have let it drag out too long when they could have had a settlement months ago.
If they are out the first four 2-2 is all I can hope for. If Gore is healthy against them, without the Wall I am worried.
GregP
Better....
that they take their suspension sooner rather than say….the middle of the season or even playoffs.
Fans stuck in the 80's are lame. Respect the past, live in the now.
I hope they are suspended....give Gore some breathing room.
I have been hearing that while the NFL is looking for a suspension, it violates the labor laws in Minnesota so they probably won’t be suspended….this was the newest article I found regarding it.
