49ers transactions for July 29
The 49ers announced today that they have officially placed Walt Harris on the Injured Reserve list for his ACL injury. Additionally, Ricky Jean-Francois has been placed on the non-football illness list.
The Harris move is certainly not a surprise. After all, unless you're Jerry Rice, you don't come back from an ACL injury the same year it happened.
As for our man RJF's illness (I guess Frenchie is the alternative?), I'm not sure yet what the illness is. Let's hope it's just the flu or something else simple and short-term. With Ray McDonald going on the PUP list yesterday, the door was opened for RJF to get a crack at making an impact. Until we know more about the illness it's probably a little early too speculate. The upside to this happening now is the team won't be hitting the practice field until Saturday, so hopefully he'll be good to go.
Update 4:19pm: Barrows is reporting it's a "stomach illness" and he shouldn't miss much if any practice time. If he does miss any time, this means more practice time for undrafted free agent Pannel Egboh. While he's unlikely to make the roster, any playing time would allow Egboh to at least draw some attention to himself.

RJF
Frenchy.
What ever we call him, this certainly surprises seems as a surprise. Did he injure himself since OTAs somehow?

why do you think he's injured?
you know what an illness is, right?
I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.
non-football illness
Nope, I’m an idiot, I thought it said non-football injury.

although
illness is said several times throughout the post, so yeah, maybe I’m not sure what illness is.

Great News
I’d much rather bring in a free agent to shore up the defensive line than count on a 7th round pick.
we weren't counting on him
and i doubt the team will bring in a free agent. a backup with a stomach virus does not warrant FA signings.
I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.
looks like
you were right anyway, with the recent signing of Babatunde Osiwhoeywhattheeverhisnameis.

Let’s hope it’s just the flu or something else simple and short-term.
I think that if it were the flu or some illness like that, they would have just let it go without putting him on any kind of lists. They sure kept Harris off IR for the longest time, so I don’t see why they would be in such a hurry to put RJF on some injury list.
My guess is that it’s some legal process that protects the 49ers if he can’t fulfill his contract due to injury sustained away from the team. I guess I could be reading too much into it, though.

Is Ricky Jean Francois actually French?
And furthermore, wasn’t that the name of a character in Call of the Wild?
