Darrius Heyward-Bey agrees to 5-year contract with Raiders
And so a key part is falling into place in the standoff between the San Francisco 49ers and Michael Crabtree. Our Raiders blog posted that Adam Schefter reported a deal between Darrius Heyward-Bey and the Raiders. That was followed by Pro Football Talk indicating it was a 5-year deal, with no other terms released.
While there are plenty of other players in the top 10 who haven't signed, DHB is the only receiver and you just know Michael Crabtree and his agent really wanted to see what DHB received. The question now is whether Crabtree tries to push for more than Heyward-Bey even though that's not generally how the draft salary slotting works. Either way, this is an important development.

There’s now a sliver of hope that Michael Crabtree will be in camp when the 49ers hit the field Saturday morning for their first practice. According to Adam Schefter, Raiders first-round pick, Darrius Heyward-Bey has agreed to a five-year deal with the Raiders. (No details yet). Unless this is an insane deal — and given the organization, you have to wonder — it should help the 49ers and agent Eugene Parker zero in on a number. For one thing, Heyward-Bey was picked three slots ahead of Crabtree. For another, he’s also a receiver. We just witnessed a run on first-round offensive linemen being signed. Are receivers next …?

I didn't get a chance to see this
because when I heard DHB’s name called at seven, I closed my eyes until I heard Crabtree’s name at 10. I was nervous, very nervous.

I have a question
If The 49ers sign Crabtree to the same contract as DHB, would you guys find that reasonable, or absurd?
Any details on the DHB contract yet?

Who cares?
All of th players’ salaries are out of the stratosphere of most fans, including those earned by the punter, or whatever. So who really cares if one multi-millionaire gets slightly more, slightly less, or about the same, as another multi-millionaire? It’s all telephones numbers. All I care about is that he gets the contract done, gets on the practice field, learns the playbook, and helps the team win. I am not particularly interested in any of the salaries let alone what the salaries mean as against another player’s salary.

If you were in charge of the NFLPA or the NFL, CBA negotiations would be a breeze!
As a fellow 49er fan, I feel the same, I just want Crab to get his contract signed so he can get on the field. Relative to the NFL, however, if the Niners sign Crab to a deal of equal value as DHB’s, its bad business. I don’t think that matter so much anymore, with the looming CBA issues at hand. There could be a set pay scale for each draft slot (similar to the NBA) in the future, so really I do just want Crab to sign and get into camp too.

When - and it is when, not if ...
… I am in charge of the NFL, Andrew, I would change a bunch of rules. Hall of Fame inductees would have to have played for a team beginning in S, prominently featuring an F, and ending in “49ers”, the Super Bowl would necessarily feature a team from the NFC West each year, and Joe Montana would become Saint Joe of Candlestick. Hang on, you mean the NFL commisioner cannot sanctify people?

I wouldn't care...
… honestly. I don’t think he deserves top 5, but the jump from 10 to 7 isn’t that big. I’m sure the NFL really doesn’t want the 49ers to give in, though.
Very unsual that
Al davis sign so quickly. Something up !
I heard that
So lets wait and see., if the deal is structured with a lot of performance incentives that’s fine, but if the is a run on the bank of Al Davis then hold the phone cause this ain’t over yet.

Not really. Al Davis is a generous man.
Darren McFadden was one of the first 1st round picks signed last season and he was given a gigantic contract.

So what happend with Russel?
He held out until near mid season before signing and he was the #1 overall

JaMarcus Russell is an idiot.

That was Al's fault
JaMarcus Russell was the No #1, thus was going to receive the most lucrative contract in football being that he was a QB. Al spent 2 months after the start of camp in denial. When he finally offered No #1 pick money the deal was completed, before that he was jerky JaMarcus around with incentive laden contracts that still didn’t amount to No #1 money.
That's not a big deal.
Since they signed Jeff Garcia as insurance, JaMarcus Russell can return to his natural position at DT if he goes over 300 pounds again.

SF Gate reports
that DHB’s deal is
$23.5 million guaranteed and $38.25 million in base salary with a maximum value of $54 million
Not sure how reliable this is, but damn, if that’s true it’s almost as good as Sanchez’s contract. Story here.
the source
is the agent of number 6 pick Andre Smith, I’d be more comfortable if it were DHB’s agent putting the numbers out there.

Why crabtree is holding out
The reason Crabtree is holding out is because he wants to move the 1st round money drop down to the number 10 pick. look at the contracts for 2008 1st round picks, 1st round picks, as you can see between the number 7 and 10 picks the contracts plummeted nearly 30 million dollars. What Eugune Parker, Crabtree’s agent, is trying to do is lower the 1st round drop to the number 10 pick so crabtree can get paid along the lines of 40 million instead of a 20% increase over Jerod Mayo which would be around 24 million. This happens every year if you remember that Jacksonville pick held out for a very long time because he wanted to drop the 1st round to him.
Crabtree holding out as long as Derrick Harvey would be a nightmare scenario.

I think eventualy Crabtree's ego
will get the best of him and he sign to show everybody that he can play.
One could argue...
… his ego is the reason he isn’t already signed. Of course, Maiocco will tell you that it’s all his agent’s doing. Maiocco seems to believe that Parker is just trying to make up for not doing enough damage control on Crabtree’s injury situation and/or “diva” accusations.
23 Mill guaranteed !!
Maiocco suggested Crabs might be seeking 16 mill in guaranteed money. If this 23 million report is true, and Parker believes he deserves top 5 money, we will be in for quite a holdout!!!! yikes
